We were socializing before the show, casually discussing Shakespeare, and they turned to me asking, “So, we can’t remember: are the witches responsible for Duncan’s death or was Macbeth?” Shakespeare’s play is, of course, ambiguous about this issue. These kinds of interpretive questions have plagued audiences since the seventeenth century. This level of ambiguity has become something scholars revere about Shakespeare: his brilliant metaphors, his endless versatility. At the same time, scholars of adaptation theory recognize that each production of Shakespeare is an interpretation. Not every ambiguity can survive; some decisions must be made in order to bring Shakespeare’s plays to life. How a producer or an adapter chooses to answer those questions ultimately has bearing on whether we consider an adaptation to be Shakespeare. Margaret Jane Kidnie addresses this problem using two examples: one performance which is received as Shakespeare, and one which is not: The Doran All’s Well projected an illusion of work stability as the reassuring effect of performance by seeming deliberately to turn away from a very specific form of adaptive practice at a heightened moment in the RSC’s institutional history. By contrast, the self-consciously innovative Warchus Hamlet challenged in key ways expectations of the work, so prompting a debate about the essence of Hamlet that serves no less effectively than the Doran instance to highlight how critical assessment of the particular instance produces, rather than meets or fails to meet, the criteria of identity by which the work is defined.”1 1 Margaret Jane Kidnie, Shakespeare and the Problem of Adaptation (London: Routledge, 2009), 34. 2 Her point is that the cultural moment of the adaptation has a great deal to do with whether it is received as Shakespeare; that is, whether or not that particular production or version of the play has made appropriate interpretive decisions regarding the ambiguities in the playtext. This seems like a modern problem, given the development of entertainment and new mediums, film, television, etc., over time. But it is not. Sir William Davenant’s adaptation of Macbeth (1664), for instance, locates the origins of evil strictly within the world of men. There is no space for powerful witches in his version and that fact had little to do with the belief in the existence of supernatural figures. His peers had lived through the English Civil Wars. They knew the horror of political ambition all too well. Like today’s audiences, these late-seventeenth century adapters of Shakespeare’s tragedies, such as Davenant, did everything they could to present clear interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays. They did so not in an attempt to fix something that was broken, but in a quest to present Shakespeare’s original intent to their audiences.2 This desire, 2 The interpretation of Davenant’s patent is debated. First, it is questioned whether or not Davenant was legally required to alter Shakespeare. This issue is initially discussed by John Freehafer who argues that Davenant was under obligation to revise the plays (“The Formation of the London Patent Companies in 1660,” Theatre Notebook 20.6 (1965), 27). Gunnar Sorelius later questions this claim, though he comes to accept it (see The Giant Race Before the Flood: Pre-Restoration Drama on the Stage and in the Criticism of the Restoration (Uppsala, Stockholm: Almqvist & Wiksell, 1966), 41; “The Early History of the Restoration Theatre: Some Problems Reconsidered,” Theatre Notebook, 33 (1979): 52–61). Hume accepts Freehafer’s position in Development of English Drama (Robert D. Hume, The Development of English Drama in the Late Seventeenth Century (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1976), 20-1). Jean I. Marsden suggests that “making fit” did not always involve major revision (The Re-Imagined Text: Shakespeare, Adaptation, and Eighteenth-Century Literary Theory (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 1995), 160, n. 1). Barbara Murray suggests that because the patent does not require that Davenant remove obscenities and like matter, it means that Davenant only needed to rework the plays for his particular company (Restoration Shakespeare: Viewing the Voice

Wilson The dramatis personae of The Tempest casts Caliban as “asavageand deformed slave.”1 Since the mid-twentieth century, critics have scrutinized Caliban’s status as a “slave,” developing a riveting post-colonial reading of the play, but I want to address the pairing of “savage and deformed.”2 If not Shakespeare’s own mixture of moral and corporeal abominations, “savage and deformed” is the first editorial comment on Caliban, the “and” here Stigmatized as such, Caliban’s body never comes to us .”ס“ working as an uninterpreted. It is always already laden with meaning. But what, if we try to strip away meaning from fact, does Caliban actually look like? The ambiguous and therefore amorphous nature of Caliban’s deformity has been a perennial problem in both dramaturgical and critical studies of The Tempest at least since George Steevens’s edition of the play (1793), acutely since Alden and Virginia Vaughan’s Shakespeare’s Caliban: A Cultural His- tory (1993), and enduringly in recent readings by Paul Franssen, Julia Lup- ton, and Mark Burnett.3 Of all the “deformed” images that actors, artists, and critics have assigned to Caliban, four stand out as the most popular: the devil, the monster, the humanoid, and the racial other. First, thanks to Prospero’s yarn of a “demi-devil” (5.1.272) or a “born devil” (4.1.188) that was “got by the devil himself” (1.2.319), early critics like John Dryden and Joseph War- ton envisioned a demonic Caliban.4 In a second set of images, the reverbera- tions of “monster” in The Tempest have led writers and artists to envision Caliban as one of three prodigies: an earth creature, a fish-like thing, or an animal-headed man.

Abstract Nell Gwyn (1650-1687), one of the very early theatre actresses on the Restoration stage and long-term mistress to King Charles II, has today become a popular cultural icon, revered for her wit and good-naturedness. The image of Gwyn that emerges from Restoration satires, by contrast, is considerably more critical of the king’s actress-mistress. It is this image, arising from satiric references to and verse lives of Nell Gwyn, which forms the focus of this paper. Creating an image – a ‘likeness’ – of the subject is often cited as one of the chief purposes of biography. From the perspective of biography studies, this paper will probe to what extent Restoration verse satire can be read as life-writing and where it can be situated in the context of other 17th-century life-writing forms. It will examine which aspects of Gwyn’s life and character the satires address and what these choices reveal about the purposes of satire as a form of biographical storytelling.

    MODULE A: TEMPEST AND HAG-SEED ESSAY • Textual conversations allow audiences to understand and appreciate changes in attitudes and values over time, by considering the resonances and dissonances that exist between texts. • This is evident when comparing William Shakespeare’s tragicomedy, The Tempest, with Margaret Atwood’s postmodernist appropriation, Hag- Seed. • Both composers communicate the different attitudes and perspectives towards similar concepts of humanity, exploring values of x in their respective context. • Ultimately, this enhances our understanding of these ideas, while also demonstrating how perspectives on social and historical contexts can change over time. • The Tempest explores themes of power and literal imprisonment through its setting and characters. • This is evident in Prospero’s enslavement of Caliban, a native of the island, who is referred to as a “poisonous slave, got by the devil himself”. • Prospero’s use of derogatory language and animalistic imagery, symbolises the negative attitudes of colonisers towards natives in the 1600s. • Caliban’s submissiveness, which is due to a paralysing fear of Prospero’s magic, “I must obey. His art is of such power”, further symbolises this power imbalance between colonisers and natives. • Power and imprisonment are further explored through Prospero. Prospero himself, experiences the retribution of power after being exiled by his “unlawful brother”, Antonio. • Prospero presents Antonio as a brother “so perfidious!”, symbolising his anger and desire for vengeance after 12 years of being imprisoned on the island. • The opening stage directions ‘a tempestuous noise of thunder and lightning’ symbolically introduces the disruption to natural order of the Jacobean chain of being through Prospero’s sovereign overthrow, stimulating the desire for revenge.

    Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 1, Issue 2 – Pages 147-156 Women in Arms: Amazons in 17th Century English Drama By Margarete Rubik This paper investigates the portrayal of Amazons in a variety of seventeenth century English plays. Sword women combining male connoted aggression and female beauty functioned as a female dream of empowerment as well as a misogynist nightmare. Hence the image of such 'masculine' women was mutable and could assume a number of different characteristics: Amazons could be portrayed as chivalrous and cruel, glamorous or denaturalized, chaste or lecherous. Humourous pictures of martial women exist side by side with hostile ones attacking the unruliness and insubordination of women and their lust for men. The fate of Amazons in seventeenth century drama is generally either death on the battlefield or marriage and submission to patriarchal rules. There are a few rare examples of dutiful wives still combining marital and martial virtues, but more often these female warriors only lay down their arms at the end of a play, out of love. Despite their prowess, the women always lose the single combat with a worthy male antagonist – usually the very man they love. In the central, sensual moment of revelation, the woman's helmet falls off and her hair falls loose. In plays featuring women in male disguise, the relationship between the lovers is often charged with homoerotic overtones: the hero is passionately attracted to the supposed boy-soldier. Androgynous figures like the Amazons also raise the question whether femininity and masculinity are inborn qualities or the products of education.

    DRESSING TO DELIGHT: THE SPECTACLE OF COSTUME AND THE CHARACTER OF THE FOP ON THE RESTORATION STAGE, 1660-1714 Lyndsey Bakewell … for costume and ornament are arrived to the heights of magnificence. —Richard Flecknoe The English Restoration theatre has long been associated with lavish spectacles. This is due in part to developments in scenery and machinery following the return of Charles II and the monarchy in 1660. Drawing influence from European practices experienced by playwrights, players, and audiences while in exile, theatrical practice included an increased technical potential for spectacular visual feats of scenographic and mechanical wonder.1 Contemporary research has often defined the theatrical practices of the Restoration in terms of these advances (see Powell 1984, Hume 1976, and Milhous 1984). When considering the spectacular nature of the English stage in this period, these discussions tend to overlook more traditional elements of stage production, such as costume, acting, and scenography. In contrast, accounts from writers during, and immediately after the Restoration, regularly discuss these elements of production, assuring us of the significance of their contribution to this period’s stage spectaculars. This paper will therefore draw on firsthand accounts and playtexts from the period, as well as reflections on stage practices in the decades that immediately followed the Restoration, in order to broaden notions of what spectacle meant to contemporary audiences and how this was achieved—particularly in relation to costume. By paying close attention to the ways in which clothes were exploited for their portrayal of character and their visual appeal, this paper will demonstrate the spectacular qualities of the seventeenth-century stage.

But in the course of reclaiming Pericles, The Winter’s Tale, Cymbeline, and The Tempest as significant works of art, this revisionary critical tradition has effaced the very qualities that make these plays so important to our understanding of Shakespeare’s career and to the development of English Renaissance drama: their belatedness and their overt strangeness. While Shakespeare’s earlier plays take pains to integrate and subsume their narrative romance sources into dramatic form, his late romance plays take exactly the opposite approach: they foreground, even exacerbate, the tension between romance and drama. Despite the ban on stage plays enforced in various forms from 1642, by the mid-1650s Davenant, poet laureate to Charles I and Royalist aid during the civil wars, succeeded in gaining the Protectorate’s approval to produce a series of “Heroick Representations” (Davenant, Proposition 2) for public audiences, first at his private residence of Rutland House and later at the Cockpit theater in Drury Lane. These “Representations” embody a unique corpus in the history of English theater. They were radically innovative productions, introducing the proscenium arch, painted, perspectival scenery, and recitative music to London audiences. The Siege of Rhodes even boasted the first English female performer to appear on a professional public stage. Nussbaum, Chair Furbish’d Remnants argues that eighteenth-century theatrical adaptations set in the Orient destabilize categories of difference, introducing Oriental characters as subjects of sympathy while at the same time defamiliarizing the people and space of London. Applying contemporary theories of emotion, I contend that in eighteenth-century theater, the actor and the character become distinct subjects for the affective transfer of sympathy, increasing the emotional potential of performance beyond the narrative onstage. Adaptation as a form heightens this alienation effect, by drawing attention to narrative’s properties as an artistic construction. A paradox at the heart of eighteenth-century theater is that while the term “adaptation” did not have a specific literary or theatrical definition until near the end of the period, in practice adaptations and translations proliferated on the English stage. Anticipating Linda Hutcheon’s postmodernist theory of adaptation, eighteenth-century playwrights and performers conceptualized adaptation as both process and product. Adaptation created a narrative mode that emphasized the process and labor of performance for audiences in order to create a higher level of engagement with ii audiences.
