Exploring the historic town of & ’s lake district

Tour Guide: Martin About your guide: Martin as over 28 years of experience as a tour guide in Shropshire From we pass the we drive through the pastureland of North Shropshire passing small villages of Cockshutt and Preston Gubbals, we come to the lakeside town of Ellesmere, where our route joins that of the which we follow to a brief stop at Whittington . Our main stop is at Oswestry, Shropshire’s third largest town. This is very close to the border and its culture reflects the Welsh Heritage of the area. It contains a large variety of shops, restaurants, and pubs. The museum and castle remains are worth a visit as well as the Cambrian Railway Heritage Centre. We have just over 2 hours stop here.

In the afternoon, there are two Choices: -

Option 1a/. We drive southwards along the border passing a golf course with 3 holes in and the rest in , a village with two pubs in England and one in Wales. We are driving with the undulating land on one side and the start of the Welsh mountains on the other. We turn towards England and visit a riverside, timber-framed church which has defied floods for centuries. Our route now takes us back into England with the evidence of the border conflicts all around us. Option 1b/. This route takes into Wales passing the mighty Chirk Castle before crossing the River Dee at Llangollen. This busy market town with part of its heritage steam railway station being suspended over the river is a very scenic spot. We now climb steeply up the Horseshoe Pass and stop at the top by the Ponderosa café. We will then descend passing the ruined Cistercian Abbey of Valle Crucis before following the River Dee and pausing to see the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct before making our way back along Thomas ’s A5 London to Holyhead Road.

Throughout your tour, Martin will provide live commentary of the incredible sights and Shropshire’s unique history.
