DOI: 10.17234/RadoviZHP.51.4 Between the King and the Sultan: the Romanian Colony in Constantinople at the End of the 19th Century The article focuses on certain results of a long-term research project which addresses a very specific aspect concerning Romanian-Ottoman relations after 1878: Romanian subjects, residents of the Ottoman Empire, perceived as a community under the pro- tection of the diplomatic and consular missions of Romania. The present contribution accords particular attention to the definition of this community and the legal status of the members of the colony registered with Romanian consulates in the imperial capital. A brief discussion of their ethno-religious profile and socio-economic char- acteristics is also included in the analysis. This is the first attempt to analyse several aspects concerning the Romanian multiethnic colony in Constantinople from different perspectives, such as occupations, nationality papers or the major problems which in- fluenced their status as foreign residents in the Ottoman Empire. The primary sources of data are the consular registers and correspondence between representatives of the Romanian state and the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, with a special focus on the analysis of an unpublished volume of documents, no. 422, “Registration,” and dated 1867-1916, from the Romanian Diplomatic Archives, Constantinople fonds. Other alternative sources were also used, such as censuses, newspapers and memoirs, in order to reconstruct an image of the Romanian colony in Constantinople up to 1900.

Politics and Education During Charles I

Annals of the „Constantin Brâncuși” University of Târgu Jiu, Letter and Social Science Series, Supplement 2/2016 POLITICS AND EDUCATION DURING CHARLES I Iulian PÎNIŞOARĂ ABSTRACT: This study does not aim to analize the evolution of educational system in Romania late XIX-th century and early XX-th century, instead the study aims to examine the way in which the political elite was formed intellectually speaking. My personal point of view, puts it that the period I mentioned above is the only when the colocation ”political elite” can be properly used. KEYWORDS: prime minister, Catargiu, politics, government, king, Charles, university, law school.

In a brief article of 1993, Lucian Boia outlined the destinies of some Western models which had come in contact with the Romanian culture; a Belgian model, seen as an appendage of the French, an English one, which in his opinion was completely marginal, and others that enjoyed a more or less brilliant fate (German, Italian, etc.) 1. Please note that each of the topics mentioned above enjoyed special attention in Romanian historiography; see for instance the studies authored by Aurel Filimon, Gheorghe Platon and even my own, dedicated to the Romanian- Belgian relations; those by Dan Berindei, Pompiliu Eliade, Nicolae Iorga and Nicolae Isar for the French case; those by Zigu Ornea regarding the German influences on the political and literary thought of the Junimea group; those by Eugen Denize and George L ăzărescu, on the cultural and political interferences between Italy and Romania, etc.

Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu Against King Carol

Reluctant Allies? Iuliu Maniu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu against King Carol II of Romania Introduction Iuliu Maniu is today regarded as the principle upholder of democratic and constitutional propriety in interwar Romania. As leader of the Romanian National Peasant Party throughout much of the interwar period and the Second World War, he is generally considered to have tried to steer Romania away from dictatorship and towards democracy. Nevertheless, in 1947 Maniu was arrested and tried for treason together with other leaders of the National Peasant Party by the communist authorities. The charges brought against Maniu included having links to the ‘terrorist’ and fascist Romanian Legionary movement (also known as the Iron Guard). The prosecutors drew attention not only to the entry of former legionaries into National Peasant Party organizations in the autumn of 1944, but also to Maniu’s electoral non- aggression pact of 1937 with the Legionary movement’s leader, Corneliu Zelea Codreanu. The pact had been drawn up to prevent the incumbent National Liberal government manipulating the elections of December 1937. Maniu had subsequently acted as defence a witness at Codreanu’s trial in 1938. 1 Since the legionaries were regarded by the communists as the agents of Nazism in Romania, Maniu was accordingly accused of having encouraged the growth of German influence and fascism in Romania.2 Maniu was sentenced to life imprisonment and died in Sighet prison in 1953. Possibly no single act of Maniu’s interwar career was more condemned within Romanian communist historiography than his electoral pact with the allegedly Nazi- 1 Marcel-Dumitru Ciucă (ed.), Procesul lui Iuliu Maniu, Documentele procesului conducătorilor Partidului Naţional Ţărănesc, 3 volumes, Bucharest, 2001, vol.

One of the organizers of the event, Matthew Heimbach, wore a shirt depicting Corneliu Codreanu.2 Codreanu was the charismatic founder, and to some extent heart and soul, of the Legion of the Archangel Michael (LAM), or the Iron Guard, as it was frequently referred to in the English speaking world, the main fascist force in Romanian politics

    Roots of Romanian Antisemitism

BACKGROUND AND PRECURSORS TO THE HOLOCAUST Roots of Romanian Antisemitism The League of National Christian Defense and Iron Guard Antisemitism The Antisemitic Policies of the Goga Government and of the Royal Dictatorship The Roots of Romanian Antisemitism The roots of Romanian antisemitism are intertwined with the origins of the modern Romanian state and the emergence of the rich national cultural tradition that accompanied unification of the principalities, independence, and the creation of Greater Romania. The antisemitism that manifested itself in Romania between the two world wars grew directly from seeds sewn at the major turning points of the country’s development starting in the mid- nineteenth century. For reasons that may have differed from person to person or group to group, strong antisemitic currents were present in various forms and with varying intensity in the political, cultural and spiritual life of Romanian society for most of the century that preceded the accession to power of the National Christian Party in 1937, the installation of the Royal Dictatorship in 1938, and the Antonescu-Iron Guard National Legionary State in 1940—that is, for most of the century that culminated in the Holocaust. The antisemitic actions of that succession of governments drew inspiration from antisemitic themes that had entered the Romanian lexicon of ideas long before the 1930s and long before the Nazi rise to influence and then power in Germany. While each of these three governing configurations mixed the essential elements of widespread antisemitic concepts somewhat differently—leaning more or less heavily on certain themes, perhaps adding to native concepts notions adapted from non-Romanian antisemitic expression, and advocating sometimes greater and sometimes lesser violence to accomplish their goals—they all represented essential continuity with Romanian antisemitic ideas that had their origins in the pre-World War I era.

A. Urechia, and Nicolae Creţulescu founded the Romanian Atheneum Cultural Society. The soul of this initiative to build THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM was CONSTANTIN ESARCU (EXARCHOS) - AROMANIAN / VLACH (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_Athenaeum)(http://ochiuldeveghe.over-blog.com/article-constantin-esarc…) THE CHURCH WITH THE MOON - ORADEA - THE BIHOR COUNTY - ROMANIA It was built with an important contribution of the Aromanian / Vlach community led by Mihai Püspöki and Mihai Kristoff. Two of the peculiarities that give the Moon Church in Oradea the portrait in Horea's medal, placed in the key of the vault arch between the nave and the altar apse, a picture that crowns the iconostasis and the mechanism made by Georg Rueppe in 1793, in the tower of the cathedral. This is the ingenious mechanism that, through its half-golden half, black, indicates the lunar phases. In the temple of the iconostasis was a painting with the image of Horea, one of the leaders of the rebellion of 1784, considered by many historians to be the only authentic reproduction of his physiognomy.
