We had been told about the fortu- nate micro-climate in Dale but thought that it could not be so different from the Havens. How wrong we were! It has also been a very blessed Holy Week and Easter in the churches and we would like to thank all those who contribut- ed. Our Lenten collecons for Water Aid in some of the churches and the profit from the Passover supper together came to the magnificent total of £150 which I have sent to Water Aid. They tell me this is enough to train three people to be water engineers for their villages, maintaining the pumping equipment and making sure that they have a lasng supply of clean, safe water. Together we have done a good thing. The year is racing on and soon it will be Pentecost. The day that changed Jesus’ first followers from scarred possessors of a world-changing secret to confident proclaimers of the triumph of Christ over sin and death. What made the difference was the gi of God’s Holy Spirit coming to them in a new way. The same Spirit which gives life to all creaon was in them enabling them to witness to a creaon being made new in Christ. So we celebrate it as the birthday of the Chrisan Church. We will be something like 1982 this year. Happy Birthday to us. My work took me on a drive over the mountain at Bwlch near Llandovery recently. The chapel at Cynghordy there has a big banner celebrang their anniversary. It says ‘1814-2014 Yma o hyd (Sll here)’ I thought it was a lile too unambious. As part of the Chrisan church it could have read ’33-2015- Yma o hyd’. Of course somemes it feels as if we are sll here only because we are hanging on by our fingerps, with our last ounce of strength, but that has just been the moment in our history when the Spirit has come again and given us new life. May it be so.

With all blessings, Andrew and Rhiannon

Many thanks to Gaynor Ford for her fascinating demonstration of Spring flower arranging at our meeting in April – she conjured several wonderful displays out of just the Spring flowers and foliage from her own garden. Our next meeting is our outing to the Mencap Gardens at Stackpole on Tues 9 th June during the day. If you wish to sign up for this, but haven’t already, please contact Harriet (636668) as soon as possible. Other dates coming up in the summer: Thurs 11 th June 2pm Steynton Church. Steynton M.U. 50 th anniversary service, followed by the usual delicious tea. Tues 14 th July will be our summer picnic at St Brides Bay (there will be an alternative rainy day venue!). There will be a bring-and-share picnic lunch, plus a raffle to replenish the branch’s depleted funds. Sue Squire (Sec.) Pittingales, Marloes Tel: 635817

Are you a child with a bad memory? Then beware of Rogation and Ascension! This year May 10 th will be Rogation Sunday. The Sunday in the year when it is traditional to ask for God’s blessing on the land, particularly on the farming land. Some parishes mark this with a procession or a service in a farm yard. The following Thursday is Ascension Day. It remembers how Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection. He went from being in one place, at one time to be always and everywhere and forever. In this area we mark it with a huge children’s festival in the Cathedral. Many people have memories of being taken to the Cathedral and then going for races and picnics on Whitesands Bay. At either rogation or ascension it was also the custom to ‘beat the bounds’. Groups, particularly of the young, would walk all round the parish boundaries and would mark the landmarks sometimes with chalk, often by hitting them with sticks and shouting, “Mark, mark, mark!” In times when they believed only pain would make young boys remember any- thing, sometimes one of them would be hit instead of the boundary stone. Mostly, though it was the boundary stones. It was important that people knew where they were because the parish was obliged to care for the poor and sick who lived in it, but only those who lived in it. It was not unknown for parishes to try and rearrange their boundaries so that particularly troublesome people suddenly found they were living in the next parish, so marking the boundaries made that less likely. You still have a right to be married and buried (if there is space in the graveyard) in your parish church, whether or not you go to services. In Oxford they still enthusiastically beat the bounds of the old city centre parishes even if this means climbing over walls and processing solemnly through a de- partment store! It would be a much more pleasant walk for us, maybe even a drive. Does anyone feel like it? I promise only to hit the landmarks. Honest. CHURCH in WALES

The Governing Body of The Church in Wales, via the Doctrine Commission has asked the Diocese to consult as widely as possible and give its views on the matter of Same -Sex partnerships. The Diocese has been asked which of the three following possibilities not recommenda- tions you think the Church in Wales should adopt? 1. Maintain that the union of one man and one woman is the only definition of marriage recognised by the Church in Wales, and make no liturgical provision for recognising same -sex relationships. 2. Make provision for the blessing of same -sex relationships (i.e. civil partnerships or state -recognised marriages), but not carry out same -sex weddings. 3. Conduct marriages for same -sex couples.

To help with these discussions there is to be a meeting open to all on Tuesday 5 th May 2015 at St Martin’s Church Hall, Haverfordwest at 7.30pm.

The Churchwardens for the four Churches on the Dale Peninsula have a short summary of the Standing Doctrine Commission Report if you should wish to look it over, or a fuller version of the Report can be found on the church website www.churchinwales.org.uk

All those on the Electoral Roll may have a say as to how the Church in Wales might move forward on this matter. This is not a vote, but a declaration of an opinion .

As a follow up to the meeting in Haverfordwest, there will be a special Diocesan Confer- ence early in June where the opinions of parishes will be noted. The resulting response from the Diocesan Conference then becomes one element to be taken into consideration by the Bench of Bishops and the Governing Body when they move on making church policy in this area.

William Folland – William was the son of James & Ellen Folland who lived at Mur- chin, Marloes. A Corporal in the Welsh Regiment, he was killed in action at Loos on the 25 th September 1915. He was 31 years old, and is remembered on the Loos Memo- rial, France.

John Folland – John was also the son of James & Ellen Folland. A Private in the Welsh Regiment, he was killed in action at Loos on the 2 nd October 1915 – only one week after his brother. He was 29 years old, and he also is remembered on the Loos Memorial, France.

Further details are available at the Heritage Centre. Any further inforamtion and photographs that families may have, and can share with Coastlands local history Group would be welcome. Contacts are - Yvonne Evans (St. Ishmaels) and Ira Hemingway (Marloes).

For Services rendered – A letter in the April Issue of Life refers to a walking stick being given to Edward Rayner, St. Brides inscribed on a silver band “for services rendered in the Great War 1914 -1918, from St. Brides & Marloes.” We are aware of one other stick similarly inscribed, but wondered if there are any others kept by families whose family member(s) served in the War, and returned.

MARLOES WEBSITE www.marloes.org.uk

As the summer approaches it is a good time to make sure that the Marloes web- site is up to date. Have you noticed any errors or links that don’t work? Do you want to change any information which relates to you or your business? Is there anything else you think should be on the website?

Please let me know on [email protected]. Coastlands Local History Group

Again the deadline and our talk are not compatible! However just ask a member and they will tell you how great the talks are. Last month members went on a Guided Tour of the Castlemartin Range, which proved a great success, much helped by some wonderful weather! Our thanks go to Peter Royle for suggesting, organising and running the tour. This month we move on to an outing to The Garrison Chapel, , for members which follows on from the talk given in May by Ted Goddard on Pembroke Dock.

As well as this visit, we look forward to a talk by Phil Bennett, which will illustrate how much archaeology was uncovered by the storms in 2014. It is being given in The Memorial Hall, St Ishmaels on Wednesday 20th May at 7.30pm. We look forward to welcoming many of you then.

In June we are holding our own Antique event following the format of the Antiques Road Show, run by Nigel Hodson of Peter Francis in Carmarthen. Some of you may have seen him on television as he has auctioned items for Flog It. The Antiques event will be on Sat 20th June 10.00am-5.00pm. Bring along the family heirlooms and find out if Granny was telling the truth or just come for the cream tea!

The following month, July, we are organising a tour of Dale Airfield. Malcolm Cullen has agreed to guide the tour and from past experience it will be fascinating. The tour will also look in at Dale Camp and the WW2 Cartoons. There are a limited number of spaces so if you would like to join us please let the secretary know (Harriet 636668).

This exhibition looks at the different work and play patterns found in the four villages in times gone by. Come and see photos of those we knew in their youth...if you can recognise them that is! This exhibition finishes at the end of the month, so don’t loose the chance to pop in!

Next month we move onto the main summer exhibition “Walking into History”, which will illustrate some of the history to be found beside the Coast path. If any of you have anything which you think we might like, or may help explain the rich history on our doorstep, please pop in to The Centre and we can copy it and give it back straight away. Competition Time at Wildlife Watch; who can catch the most crabs?? This Saturday the competition was hotting up, just like the weather. The titles up for grabs were; who could catch; the most females, the most males, the biggest, the smallest and the most crabs. Laden with crabbing lines and bacon we set off down to the pontoon in Dale Village. Though a little slow to start with, the crabs soon started biting. With a little local help we soon had them rolling in. Some people were very skilled crabbers, with the highest number caught by one group at 31, while others weren’t so lucky.

But by the end of the session we had managed to tempt 91 shore crabs and one massive hermit crab with bacon-y goodness. Our biggest find was a 6.8cm girl and our smallest was a 2.4cm boy. Girls are clearly greedier than boys as we caught 56 females and only 35 boys. After the fastest looking crabs had been selected and raced back into the waves, it was time to say goodbye to our impressive haul, and all the crabs were released. Next time : Saturday 9 th May we will be seine netting at the Gann, please meet at 10am at the Gann car park. Could be very muddy and wet, please bring appropriate clothing and footwear. For more information about the group, visit the Dale Fort Watch Group webpage - www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/watchgroups/dale-fort. To book a place, contact Dale Fort Field Centre on 01646 636 205 or email Catherine on [email protected] or Helen on [email protected].

Reminders of the date will be sent to Hall Users, Community Coun- cillors, Hall Trustees nearer to the time. Anyone else who would be interested in helping to refurbish the Memorial Hall will be very welcome to come along. The Hall is owned by the Community Council on behalf of the Community. There was a great effort by many people to build this Hall in the dark days of 1915 to 1924 when the Hall was eventu- ally opened. Can you help now to renovate the building to meet the needs of a 21st Century building?

A Re-opened Footpath

Many of you may have wondered about the footpath marked on the Ordnance Survey map across the Winterton Valley between Orlandon hamlet and Winterton hill. For many years it has not existed – I tried to walk it shortly after we moved here and was faced by an impenetrable mass of scrub and bog! This footpath has now been re- opened, along a slightly different route about 200 metres east of the original route. It starts about 200 metres south of Orlandon on the Mullock- St Brides road.

The footpath gives new perspectives on the Gann, and an opportunity to see more of Winterton Marsh and one of the reservoirs in the valley. To make a short circular walk park at Mullock Bridge, walk towards Haverfordwest and then up the lane towards St Brides. The lane skirts wet scrub, and then our house (Orlandon Kilns) before going uphill. After a few hundred yards, and before reaching the collection of colourful cottages at Orlandon, you will come across a new footpath sign pointing into the field on your left. The path takes you along the edge of the field and then on to a boardwalk passing though the wet scrub and carr in the valley bottom. It then skirts the edge of the carr, before turning to diagonally ascend the hill. On the way up there are views over Winterton Marsh, a potato reservoir, and even of our house and garden (look for the green summerhouse). At the top of the hill the path joins the path from Winterton Farm to Mullock Bridge. From here there are wide views over the Gann from Mullock Bridge down towards Dale and then across the Haven to Sheep Island. After skirting Continued overleaf the edge of fields (well signposted) the path descends down to Mullock Bridge.

The walk takes 45 minutes – 1 hour. There is also the opportunity to incorporate this path across the valley in a circular walk from St Brides.

Thanks to Peter Evans of Orlandon Farm, Steve Ford of Winterton Farm, and the Na- tional Park for opening up this path. Peter Royle

Dear friends & supporters of St Ishmaels Cricket Club Would you like to sponsor us this year? £10 would provide a match ball £25 would pay the Umpire’s fee & £25 would go a long way to sponsoring a cricket tea. Any sponsorship would be most gratefully accepted. A very big ‘Thank You’ to those generous supporters who helped us last season. Yours in sport Wendy Bradshaw (Tel. 636446) Sec. St Ishmaels C.C. THE RED KITE

Red Kites are truly such beautiful birds! To see one on a bright spring morning cruising in a leisurely fashion along a valley, or circling lazily in a thermal, is always a sight to lift the spirits. Its long, forked and ever twisting tail, rich rufous plumage and easy, elegant and lazy flight make the bird unmistakeable.

Unfortunately it is not a sight we see very often right out at the end of the Marloes/Dale penin- sula as they do not breed here. Red Kites are birds which like to nest in secluded and undis- turbed wooded valleys with plenty of open country nearby. They have been breeding in Pembrokeshire since 2003 and their stronghold is in the Gwaun Valley. However they are doing well and are now frequently seen near Walwyn’s Castle and at Sandy Haven so they may soon be breeding, or per- haps are already doing so, quite nearby.

We have only twice seen Red Kites from our garden – most recently a few weeks ago when a pair were lazily cruising around over the meadows behind our house. They circled several times quite low down and we had terrific views of the two birds, which were in impeccable plumage. Whilst flying, one bird was eating what looked like a vole which it held in its talons.

I seem to remember that during spring, Red Kites are often seen in unusual places, often in quite big groups – I am sure I remember reading about a group of six circling over Ramsey. I presume these must be young birds, not yet breeding, but investigating all the local possibilities. Rosemary Royle

MOTHS I now have a portable moth trap which gives out quite a faint purplish light. It is therefore suitable for trapping in gardens and other places where a bright light is not suitable or where there is no power source If you would like me to see what you have flying around your garden at night, especially if you have good habitat such as trees nearby, then just contact me - see details on the back page.
