Rudy B. Aruleweg (born in Leiden, February 28th, 1952) studied government at the University of Leiden and political science at the University of Mitchigan, Ann Arbor, USA. Since 1976 he has been a lecturer in political science at the University of Lei den. He teaches Dutch politics and political behaviour and is currently preparing a dissertation on the causes and processes of post-war change in the Dutch electorate. Among other publications he has co-authored a book on the 1977 Dutch cabinet formation.

Jos de Beus (born in Utrecht, November 27nd, 1952) studied political science at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. Since 1977 he has been a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Amsterdam. His field of lecturing concerns public choice. He has written articles about guided wage policy, the theory of the state and enterprise in the People's Republic of China. His current research concerns the relationship between economic order and freedom.

Willem Brand (born in Amsterdam, 1910) obtained his doctorate in economics from the University of Amsterdam. Between 1937 and 1946 he worked for International Business Machines Inc., managing a subsidiary in the East Indies. He spent the years 1942-1945 as a Japanese prisoner of war. In 1946 hejoined the United Nations as an economist and in 1956 he became professor of development economics at the University of Leiden. He is author of several books and articles related to development problems and economic and social questions related to rich countries and the Third World.

Karl Dittrich (born in Maastricht, July 9th, 1952) studied government at the University of Lei den. From 1975 to 1978 he was a research assistant in the Department of Political Science at the University of Leiden where he completed a dissertation on Dutch municipal elections. Having spent a year as a Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, he is currently a lecturer in political science at the University of Leiden. Among other publications he has co• authored a book on the 1977 Dutch cabinet formation.

Hans van den Doel (born Zierikzee, April 4th, 1937) studied economics at the Free University of Amsterdam and he was 4w4rded his Ph.D. by the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 1971. Between 1966 and 1973 he was a member of parliament (Tweede Kamer) for the Dutch labour party. From 1973 to 1975 he was professor of political science at the Catholic University of Nijmegen and since 1975 he has been professor of economics at the University of Amsterdam. He has published a number of books and articles on economic systems and economic policy.

Wim Driehuis (born Utrecht, June 22nd, 1943) studied economics at the University of Amster• dam and received his Ph. D. from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 1972. Between 1967 and 1972 he worked in the Central Planning Bureau in The Hague. In 1973 he became reader 310 Notes on contributors and in 1975 professor of macro-economics at the University of Amsterdam. His current research interests include labour market analysis, wage and price formation and macro• economic models.

Comelis]. van Eijk (born Amsterdam, October 5th, 1923) studied economics at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently professor of economics at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. His current research interests lie in recent developments in model building for the design of economic policy in the countries of the EEC.

Richard T. Griffiths (born Twickenham, Middlesex, U.K. 7th April 1948) studied economic history and Russian studies at the University College of Swansea and received his Ph. D. in 1977 from Cambridge University. From 1973 to 1979 he was lecturer in European Studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He is currently professor in social and economic history at the Free University Amsterdam. He has published in the area of 19th and 20th century Dutch economic development.

Galen A. Irwin (born] oplin, Missouri, USA] anuary 14th, 1942) studied at] oplinJunior College, the University of Kansas and received his Ph. D. in 1967 from the Florida State University. he has taught at the F10rida State University and the University ofIowa, USA. He is currently pro• fessor in political behaviour and research methods at the University of Leiden. In 1977 he was Director of the Dutch National Election Study and co-editor ofDe Nederlandse Kiezer '77. He has published various articles on political participation and voting behaviour.

Peter W. Klein (born Vienna, December 12th, 1931) studied economics at the Nederlandse Economische Hoogeschool, Rotterdam. He received his Ph. D. in 1965. Between 1969 and 1974 he was extraordinary professor in economic history at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He has published books and articles on Dutch economic history spanning the 17th to the 20th century. At the moment he is professor in the history of society at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

Gerbertus A. van der Knaap (born Rotterdam,] uly 16th, 1944) studied human geography at the U ni• versity of Utrecht. In 1970 he was appointed lecturer in economic geography at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam lecturing on research methods in economic geography and regional development problems in Western Europe. He received his Ph. D. in 1978. His current research interests are in urban and regional planning with special emphasis on population migration.

Comelis Lemckert (born The Hague, November 21 st, 1941) studied economics at the N ederlandse Economische Hoogeschool, Rotterdam. Since 1969 he has worked for the Ministry of Economic Affairs, first in the division for general economic policy and, at present, in the Directorate General for energy policy. He has contributed '3. titre personnel'.

Ruud Lubbers (born Rotterdam, May 7th, 1939) studied economics at the Nederlandse Economische Hoogeschool, Rotterdam. He worked as secretary for the Board of Directors of Lubbers' construction plant and machinery mill, Hollandia B.V., from '63-'65. In 1965 he became one of the Directors. Mr. Lubbers was member of the board of the Netherlands' Christian Employers Federation (NCWB). From 1973-1977 Mr. Lubbers was Minister of Economic Affairs. At the moment, as Member of Parliament (Tweede Kamer) he leads the parliamentary fraction of the Christian Democratic Party. He published regularly, mainly on economic policy issues.

Theo van der Tak (born Rotterdam, February 21st, 1948) studied government at the University of Leiden and then worked as a journalist. Since 1975 he has been a lecturer in public administra- Notes on contributors 311

tion at the Graduate School of Mangagement in Delft where he teaches Dutch politics and policy processes. His main research interests are in the field of public administration and public policy. Amongst other publications he has co-authored a book on the 1977 Dutch cabinet formation.

Pieter de WoifJ (born Amsterdam, May 25th, 1911) studied Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. He held various appointments at the University of Amsterdam, the Central Bureau of Statistics, Philips and the Amsterdam Municipal Bureau of Statistics until, in 1957, he became director of the Netherlands' Central Planning Bureau which he remained until 1966. Between 1953 and 1975 he was professor in Mathematical economics at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently vice-chairman of the Advisory Council on Science Policy. Current research interests are in economic planning, mathematical economics and growth theory.
