As we are living in a very unprecedented time, we reflect on what is most important…Family! We have all been asked to stay home and be with our immediate family to stop the spread of the Corona Virus. What this has done is brought our families closer and together. During this time families are learning to pivot and adjust to offer school at home, to coexist during the day with our spouse when usually they would be at work, completely moving the norm for our pets who usually have the run of the house every day. What this has forced me to do is think of my life and what is really important. My family, not only at home but here in our office, is what I think of during this trying time. Maybe you are doing some of the same reflection in your own life. We have learned we can adjust, and I think before this is all over, we will believe that we should adjust from time to time to get a better perspective on our lives. As we slowly start returning to our new normal, we look back and evaluate. For some, they have had to close their doors temporarily not knowing when they will open again, so they adjust. For others, their job may no longer be there due to furloughs, so they adjust. Some businesses realized there is too much human interaction and to reopen again they must adjust. What I am most proud is to see our Cy-Fair businesses adjust and do everything they can to be successful! I look forward to sharing some of those success stories in future publications. We hear people say that they see the light at the end of the tunnel. My hope for you as a business is that during this unprecedented time, the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce was a light IN the tunnel. We ourselves have adjusted. We moved our staff home with laptops to continue to meet the needs of our businesses and community members safely. We learned the world of Zoom like many of you and adjusted. Our staff members have called, written letters, visited businesses to see how people are adjusting, and provided support and hope. Continue to stay strong and stay safe! Leslie Martone, IOM President Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce

Hidden Heroes of Cy-Fair

Many of our non-profits are helping those in need as they manage their way through this new COVID-19 world. They are passing out food to those who have been furloughed or to those that count on a meal coming from school. What is most disheartening as we listen to our non-profits at our quarterly roundtable, is the service they provide will not stop, but because of COVID19 the fundraisers and events that these non-profits count on have all been postponed or even cancelled. CAM – Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) - cypressassistance.org | 281-955-7684 CAM is providing food assistance and assistance with rent/mortgage and utilities for people residing in zip codes 77065, 77095, 77429 & 77433. CAM’s Operation Jobs is providing employment services via phone and email. It was extra special to keep the Pantry open every day during the heart of the Pandemic. To give you a point of reference, in all of 2019 CAM provided food to 12,050 people. Between March 20, 2020 and May 27, 2020 – about 10 weeks - CAM provided food to 8,652 people. They distributed about 145 tons of food during that time. They fed people every day at a pace that was unprecedented and all via a drive-through operation. In additions, they also provided food support to a number of local organizations including: House of Help – Hempstead, Magnificate House, Harmony House, Special Delivery (People who are elderly and/or disabled who have food delivered to their homes), Spirit Key, Mission of Yahweh, Emergency Food Orders for people who are Homeless, and Centro Cristiano la Viña. Cy-Hope - cy-hope.org | 713-466-4673 The Hope Centers had to close but were still supporting their families. • Delivering bags of food to families with limited transportation. • Creating and delivering Easter crafts to children. • Finding creative ways to stay connected remotely by reaching out to students and families. Due to COVID-19, Cy-Hope shifted their focus to their feeding assistance programs. They also helped organize and host several blood drives for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank, provided volunteers for the Houston Food Bank’s Mega Food Distribution Events, conducted food drives, and modified their counseling to support teletherapy. Cy-Fair Helping Hands - cyfairhelpinghands.org | 281-858-1222 Updated Numbers through 5/23/2020. • 4,400 families served through Drive-thru food pantry distribution • 17,300 individuals • 66,732 lbs. of food received and distributed since March 17th-last week (we took this week off to give our volunteers an opportunity to rest. • 767 lbs. of produce harvested from our community garden Challenges: The Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent emotional and economic backlash has affected efforts to serve the needy in our community. As a direct result of the mass hysteria produced by the virus, partnering food agency donations are at an all-time low. With the closures of schools, churches, and community businesses, sources for non-perishable food, toiletries, and other essential items have dwindled drastically. A faith-based ministry, CFHH is run entirely by volunteers, most of whom are of retirement age. Due to age, health issues, and childcare responsibilities, the Coronavirus pandemic has forced many of their volunteers to remain at home. Despite these issues, the Cy-Fair Helping Hands Community Food Pantry has maintained regular hours. Appropriate precautions are taken to sanitize surfaces several times daily, donning gloves and masks, and by practicing social distancing. Food is distributed through a curbside drive-thru; clients are instructed to remain in their cars and pop their trunks, while volunteers place boxes of non-perishables, bakery goods, produce, meat, and prepared refrigerated foods into their cars. - 12 - Hope Disaster Recovery - hopedrtx.org | 832-857-6449 The Masks for All project began in May to help supply reusable masks to those in the most vulnerable populations. The CDC recently announced that in addition to social distancing and hand washing, the use of masks is very helpful in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Hope Disaster Recovery began organizing congregations in our area to make cloth, reusable masks and enlisting congregations who would distribute those masks in their communities. Currently there are 41 congregations participating and they have collected 6,564 masks! Each mask potentially helps one person stop the spread. They have also been involved in food distribution. Hope Disaster Recovery currently has four congregations who are participating in food drives. Their volunteers have sorted, bagged and delivered 325 Disaster Food Bags to those in need. Each bag has been filled with up to 10 lbs of non-perishable food staples. Hope Disaster Recovery has rebuilt 109 homes since Hurricane Harvey and continues to work in Harvey damaged homes as well as homes damaged by Tropical Storm Imelda. COVID-19 changed the way they do this in terms of safety to the volunteers, staff and homeowners. They have been busy incorporating safety practices into their rebuild operations as well as implementing safety practices for communicable diseases into their Congregational Disaster Readiness (TXCDR) program. The TXCDR program is designed to help congregations prepare for and respond to disasters in our communities If you would like any additional information on the Masks for All project, food distribution, rebuilding flood damaged homes or Congregational Disaster Readiness please contact [email protected]. MESA-OUTREACH, INC. - mesa-outreach.org | 281-599-8536 MESA-OUTREACH, INC. has been blessed to be a blessing to the Houston Northwest/Harris County/Cypress & Katy Area Communities especially during this COVID-19 health and economic crisis. Since the Harris County shutdown in mid-March 2020, MESA-OUTREACH had to adapt and redesign the way they served those clients in need. Since MESA’s Food Pantry was considered an essential service and with the help and guidelines of the Houston Food Bank and Harris County, they continued to keep their regularly scheduled dates of service (2nd & 4th Tuesday Evenings 5-7:30 pm and by hosting the HFB Produce Truck on the 3rd Saturday from 8:30-11 am). They serve clients from all over our city by distributing bags of food or produce to each family or individual in a drive through system that protects volunteers, staff, and their clients. MESA’s volunteers are masked and gloved and observing the 6’ social distancing as they serve. MESA’s Food Pantry is not zip code specific, and since they are one of the few night pantries in Houston, the Houston Food Bank refers clients to MESA-OUTREACH’s Food Pantry regularly. In April, MESA served 855 families/3,879 individuals a total of 20,462 lbs of food and 12,282 lbs of fresh produce. This is almost double the April 2019 number of 456 families/2,166 individuals served. This past month, May 2020, MESA served 858 families/3,816 individuals a total of 29,969 lbs of food and 9,949 lbs of fresh produce. Compared to May 2019, when 439 families/2002 individuals were served. Thanks to generous donors, partner churches, the Houston Food Bank and the May 9th Food Drive MESA hosted which collected 3,894 lbs of food, they have been able to continue to provide food to families and individuals in need during this crisis. “Together, we can continue to serve the needs of our neighbors and strengthen our communities during this crisis and throughout the year.”

A Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization the provides resources for their members’ economic growth and advocates for their community in the areas of economic development, education, and transportation.

What types of resources do they offer their members? They offer their members opportunities through networking and special events to connect with other 1 members of the chamber and community, to develop strong relationships, and grow their business. In what ways do they advocate for their community? Some business communities are considered unincorporated areas of a county and have no government 2 arm, so the chamber is a voice to get things done for the community.
