Town Council Notes and activities for December 2018

As Town Council entered their second month serving our great community and with Christmas holidays we were not as active as the first month. As Mayor and Council we have all gone through a couple of two day teaching seminars. With changes coming in the Municipal Government Act, [MGA] it has been important that we are all up to speed in our understanding the roles, responsibilities and regulations to being on a municipal council. It is important that we know how best to serve you our community, work with our CAO, offer support to our town staff and fulfill the requirements placed on us by the Municipal Affairs. Some of our highlights have been: *A tour of the complete working of our Public Works team, equipment, facilities and our water services set up including our wells and Lagoon system for water waste. *We have had a number of citizens attend our public council meetings. Some have come to ask for information and insight into working in our community. *We had S/Sgt Andrew Shepard in attendance to meet the new Council and to provide Council with an update on matters concerning the RCMP and policing in the Bentley area. We were able to discuss the crime in our area and discussed the best ways to make our community a safer place for our citizens to live *We met with: Mark Sproule, Senior Peace Officer, Lacombe County Enforcement was in attendance to meet the new Council and to provide an overview and update on matters concerning the activities of Lacombe Enforcement in the Bentley area and to discuss the renewal and role of the Lacombe Enforcement Agreement with Bentley *We have met twice in working on our new budget for 2018 *We are reviewing policies and procedures that are part of keeping our community operations. effective and being best practise. *We want the citizens to know they are welcome to attend council meetings and that as Mayor and Council we are available to listen to your ideas, concerns and questions. *We would like to have an informal evening ‘Coffee with the Council, early in this New Year.’ We look forward to working together for the next four years as public servants and to be able to direct you to where you can find opportunities and answers to your questions. Thank you on Behalf of the council, Mayor Greg Rathjen Submitted

403-748-2160 8 With the approach of Christmas, December was a busy month for 4-H. We had our Christmas party on the tenth which included public skating at the Bentley Arena, followed by a potluck dinner and gift exchange at a club member’s house. The club had a fun time volunteering at the annual Santa Breakfast held in Bentley, serving breakfast and cleaning up. Small engines group managed to finish taking apart their engines, and are now working on putting them back together. The poultry group continues to learn about chickens and to record information about their own chickens they are raising. The cooking club had a fun time make the desserts for the concession at the Bentley Christmas Farmer’s Market held on the sixteen of December. They helped make and serve the breakfast and lunch as well as manage the concession. We had the opportunity of having a professional cookie and cake decorator come and teach us different techniques and tips on how to make really nice Christmas cookies. We look forward to the new year and the events that it holds!

 Thank you to the local businesses and the town that kindly offer display space for posters about community and area events of interest. Your support is appreciated by the school, local sport groups, churches and other non profits. Just a note to the public -, please keep in mind that it is frustrating if people use these boards to advertise their businesses and there is little space left to post events. Thanks for finding other ways to advertise your business.! JR

 Eileen and Ron Smith thank the people of Bentley and area for their friendship and support over the past 16 years. We also wish to thank you for your cards, gifts and good wishes in retirement. We will never forget our time in Bentley and wish you all the best for the future.

 This recognition goes to all of the people who go out of their way to help someone have a better day. Whether it is during the holiday season, in a time of crisis or “just because”. There are some very kind, loving, selfless and generous people in our community and we are blessed to have you!

 Participation in decorating houses for the Christmas season was awesome!

 Santa’s Celebration had 369 people signed in, which included 179 adults and 190 children. In addition to that there were 32 adult volunteers and 36 youth volunteers. What a great community!

 Thank you to the businesses and individuals who donated to the Santa’s Celebration. Even though you don’t want recognition and wish to be “silent” partners …… we couldn't make it happen without you!

 Best wishes to everyone in the New Year!

 We'd like to thank each & every one of you who expressed your condolences & sympathy to our families on the passing of Diane. Your thoughtfulness & concern made this difficult time much more bearable. Diane was a big part of all of our lives & will leave a huge hole in our families. Your support will go a long way in helping us carry on without her. Diane stated that 1 of her wishes on her passing was that anyone wishing to remember her, should plant something in the spring, in her words, "to make the world a better place." Our heartfelt thanks from the Park & Butcher families.

 Thanks again to everyone who supported the Care Centre Bake Sale, as well as the Angel Tree Fundraiser. We hope you enjoyed the baking & the Angel Tree money will be used to bring in entertainment for the Seniors.

 A heartfelt thank you to all the community groups and volunteers who help to make the Town of Bentley a great place to live. A small community with a lot to offer … we may not have everything but what we have is awesome and what we can enhance or bring is an opportunity to be even better!

 "Thank you to whoever is keeping the bike path open, greatly appreciated!"

 "Thank you to whoever busted open the trail to Gull Lake yesterday, The snow was too hard for the quads with blades Thanks to all who voted so we are guessing it was a bobcat. Much appreciated" for me in the last election.  A big thank you to our vibrant business community for I look forward to your efforts to provide the great shopping opportunities for representing the interests us right at home. It is wonderful to see you supporting one another to make us a stronger community. Your hard work of Bentley during my is appreciated! term. Lloyd Carefoot

Your fire department has been dispatched to ten incidents over the past two months: Shortly before noon on November 23 ten members responded to an MVA on Highway #20 between Rainy Creek Road and Aspelund Road. A southbound semi and a northbound pickup had narrowly avoided a collision with each other but both vehicles ended up in the west ditch. All occupants were able to get out safely but traffic had to be controlled while EMS evaluated them and tow trucks removed the vehicles. Late in the evening on November 28 crews attended an accident on Highway #12 near RR 28-3. A deer had unwisely crossed the road in front of a pickup. Firefighters cared for the patient while awaiting EMS, carefully controlled traffic in the dark and scraped the remnants off the roadway. On December 3 a call was received of an electrical hazard at a rural residence southeast of Bentley. The occupants reported a burning electrical smell but the odour had dissipated by the time fire crews so the TIC camera and gas sniffer was used to detect any unusual heat or fumes. None was found so the homeowner was advised to have the furnace and electrical systems professionally inspected. On December 4 nine firefighters responded to a structure fire in Bentley. Smoke had been discovered belching from the home's vents immediately following a brief power outage. The furnace was quickly turned off and the occupants wisely evacuated. The house was inspected with the TIC and gas sniffer and nothing concerning was found so the homeowners were informed and the tenants returned home. About 4 p.m. on December 21 four members were called to a medical assist north of town. West was called in to help Bentley with an elderly cardiac patient who sadly passed away. At 10:34 p.m. on December 23 an alarms call was received from a rural residence west of Bentley. The home's smoke detector was discovered by the homeowner to have a sensor problem and crews were stood down. At 7:45 on Christmas Eve ten members were sent to assist Lacombe Fire Department with a structure fire at Highway #12 and RR 27-5. This was called in by a passerby who apparently saw something. No one was home at the farm and an investigation was conducted, however nothing was found and fire crews from Lacombe, Bentley and Blackfalds returned home. On December 26 another structure fire was reported north of Lacombe and Bentley was called for Mutual Aid. Ten members were sent to what was discovered to be a controlled burn in a dumpster. On the evening of December 30 firefighters were sent to the Westview Apartment complex where a smoke alarm was sounding inside one of the apartments. The manager was unable to get access to the unit as it was somehow blocked from the inside. Crews forced the door open and discovered a pan had been left on the stove with the burner still on. The stove was turned off and the pan removed. There was no damage to the apartment or the contents. And on January 3 around suppertime another alarms call was received, this time from a home in Lake Trail Estates in Bentley. All four of the carbon monoxide detectors were going off so the residents were evacuated. The gas sniffer detected elevated levels so the doors were opened to ventilate until acceptable levels were reached. ATCO was notified and firefighters remained until they arrived, then turned the scene over to them.

This has been a busy year for the Bentley District Fire Department, with a new record of 91 calls received between December 1, 2016 and December 1, 2017. They are broken down as follows:

3 Structure Fire 10 Vehicle Fire 14 Outside Fire 2 Smoke Investigation 1 Gas Leak/Odour 1 Explosion 19 MVA 9 Medical Assist 10 Alarms Ringing 6 Mutual Aid 3 Watercraft Rescue 2 Ice Rescue 1 Citizen Assist 7 Electrical Hazard 2 Fuel Spill 1 Body Recovery

As you can see, the duties of your firefighters vary widely. Our committed volunteers train every Monday night in addition to many specialized courses offered over some weekends. If you are interested in an amazing and rewarding volunteer opportunity please visit us at: bentleyfire.ca

We look forward to speaking with you!
