The District is bounded by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. • The South Eastern boundary is flanked by Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala State. • The District lies between 8o 03' and 8o 35' N Latitude, 77o 15' and 77o 36' E Longitude and has an areal extent of 1684 sq.km. • There are 9 Blocks, 95 Villages and 1384 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The major river in the district is Kuzhithuraiar. • This river has got two major distributaries namely Kodayar and Paralayar. There are many tributaries for Kodayar River and among them are Chittar I and Chittar II rivers. • The origin of Kodayar River is Western Ghats and the river confluences with Arabian Sea near Thengaipattanam, at a distance of about 56 Km. west of Cape Comorian, the southernmost tip of India. • Valliar, another small river and its tributary Thoovalar, originates from Velimalai Hills, and confluences with Arabian Sea near Manavalakurichi. Pazhayar is another small river draining the district. The Melagiris form part of an almost unbroken stretch of forests connecting Bannerghatta National Park (which forms its north-western boundary) to the forests of Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary - Karnataka (which forms its southern boundary, separated by the river Cauvery), and further to Biligirirangan hills and Sathyamangalam forests. The northern and western parts are comparatively plain and is part of the Mysore plateau. The average elevation in this region is 500-1000 m. Ground sinks to 300m in the valley of the Cauvery and the highest point is the peak of Guthereyan at 1395.11 m. Red sandy loam is the most common soil type found in this region. Small deposits of alluvium are found along Cauvery and Chinnar rivers and Kaoline is found in some areas near Jowlagiri. The temperature ranges from 10°C ± 35°C. South-west monsoon is fairly active mostly in the northern areas, but north-east monsoon is distinctly more effective in the region. -

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF HOUSING & URBAN AFFAIRS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2803 TO BE ANSWERED ON MARCH 13, 2018 DEVELOPMENT OF CITIES No.2803 SHRI LAXMI NARAYAN YADAV: Will the Minister of HOUSING AND URBAN AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the proposals for the development of cities forwarded by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh to the Union Government during the last three years; (b) the names of the cities and the nature of work to which the said schemes are related to; and (c) the action taken so far by the Union Government on the said proposals along with the final outcome thereof? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE ((INDEPENDENT CHARGE) OF THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING & URBAN AFFAIRS (SHRI HARDEEP SINGH PURI) (a) to (c) Urban Development is a State subject. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs facilitates and assists States/Union Territories (UTs), including Madhya Pradesh, in this endeavour through its various Missions- Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Smart Cities Mission (SCM), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yogana(Urban)(PMAY-U) and through Metro Rail Projects to improve urban infrastructure to improve the quality of life in cities and towns covered under these Mission. List of such cities/towns in the State of Madhya Pradesh along with details of funds released are in Annexure. Under the Missions the Central Government approves the State Plans and provides the Central Assistance to the States. The projects are designed, approved and executed by the States/UTs and the Cities.
