Yonsei GSIS Homepage Korean Exhibition Expo in Bangkok From October 2nd to the 4th, GSIS representatives participated About GSIS in the Korean Education Expo in Bangkok, held at the Royal Paragon Hall in the Siam Paragon shopping mall. Attendees of Yonsei University the expo were able to receive detailed information about Yonsei and specifically about GSIS. YGLF - Presidential Special Lecture On Thursday, October 15th at 5:30pm, Yonsei :: University President Dr. Kap-Young Jeong will give a special lecture to members of the Yonsei Global Leadership Forum, or YGLF, and all others who would like to attend. All interested should be sure to be at Jinri Hall before 5:30pm on October 15th.

Yonsei Institute for Global Sustainability The Institute for Global Sustainability is a new project at Yonsei, officially opening on October 22nd on Yonsei's Songdo campus. The Institute focuses on promoting, advocating, and educating in terms of development via sustainability, and works to organize lecture series and invite distinguished scholars from around the world to share their knowledge on sustainability in the post-MDG era. Additionally, the institute has a joint lecture series and partnerships with other leading sustainability institutes such as the United Nations Office of Sustainable Development, and promotes knowledge sharing on 's sustainable development with other countries. NK Review Conference on North Korean Studies Hosted by the North Korean Review and the Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies and sponsored by Yonsei GSIS, this conference will host speakers and scholars from around the globe, all experts in North Korean Studies. The conference takes place on Wednesday, October 14th at the President Hotel in City Hall and on October 15th at the Kim Dae Jung Library near Shinchon. The October 14th session will begin with a graduate student panel discussion moderated by GSIS Professor John Delury. GSA Events --For those of you who have not had enough of the Yonsei- Korea University rivalry yet this semester, get ready for GSIS Yeongojeon. This friendly competition between GSIS students is held every semester and will feature matchups in basketball and soccer this semester. Our teams have been practicing hard in order to prepare for the games to be held on Sunday, October 25th. --The following week GSA will be hosting its traditional Halloween Mixer on the evening of Saturday, October 31st. --GSA Vice-President, Alan Ayala, who is an experienced Spanish as a Foreign Language instructor, recently gave his first open lecture for GSIS students interested in learning Spanish. This class is targeted at beginner learners. The first class was held on September 25th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm in room 204, and will be held weekly on Fridays at the above time and place. It's a great opportunity for students new to Spanish to receive free, expert instruction. --For more details on any GSA sponsored events students can always visit the GSA office in the student lounge on the 4th floor of New Millennium Hall during office hours from 12pm- 6pm.

September Events Recap

Guest Lecture - Dr. Jonathan Liebenau On Tuesday, September 15th, Dr. Jonathan Liebenau of the London School of Economics gave a talk on the role of institutions in shaping the rule and norms of internet and telecommunications. He presented his latest comparative study on US, European, and Asian internet infrastructures and business opportunities, using an institutionalist approach to define how networks and telecommunication work in the different regions and how eventually they could affect businesses. Dr. Liebenau concluded by postulating that the centralization of internet infrastructure could affect the quality of the internet and therefore of businesses.

International Students Dinner President of Yonsei University Dr. Kap-Young Jeong hosted more than 400 international students at the President's Residence for the 2015 Korean Thanksgiving Dinner on Wednesday, September 23rd. Various students participated in the program for the night, and attendees were able to enjoy music from the US, Africa and China performed by their peers, as well as hear words from some international students and the President himself.

Kickoff The semi-annual Kickoff dinner took place this year on Thursday, September 24th, with the GSIS Dean, professors and close to 60 current students. The event began with a dinner in the Sinchon area, followed by a second round where students and professors could grab a drink together. The current GSA executives also announced the new 1st semester representatives.

Recent GSIS Grads

Jun Hee Kim, who also goes by Angelo, graduated from Yonsei GSIS following the Fall 2013 semester. He majored in International Cooperation with double concentration; International Security & Foreign policy and Global Strategy & Management. Upon graduating Jun Hee joined the Korean Development Institute (KDI) as a Research Associate. His current position lead him t o t h e Knowledge Sharing Program, a Government to Government cooperative that offers policy recommendations to other countries based on Korea's economic development know-how. To date he has contributed to year long consultancy projects for nations in Latin America and the Middle East.

Brian Reams graduated from Yonsei GSIS in August 2014, majoring in International Cooperation with a focus on Global Affairs & Policy. He is currently working as a research officer in the defence section of the British Embassy in . In his position, he performs research and analysis in support of the UK Defence Attache and the UK's representation in the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission.

In the Public Eye

New Publications --This past month Understanding Public Diplomacy in East Asia: Middle Powers in a Troubled Region was published as part of the Palgrave Macmillan Series in Global Public Diplomacy. Yonsei GSIS Dean Yul Sohn co-edited the book with Jan Melissen of the University of Antwerp, Belgium. It contains a variety of articles focusing on public policy as it relates to the particularities of the East Asian experience. Contributors are based around the globe at leading institutions where they continue to shape debates and views on public diplomacy. --Dean Yul Sohn also served as guest editor for the academic journal Asian Perspective for the September 2015 issue. This special issue focuses on the "Abe Shinzo Effect" in North East Asia and builds off the Yonsei GSIS Academic Conference held this past spring at New Millennium Hall. Articles in the issue come from noted scholars based in , China, Japan and the US, including GSIS Professor John Delury.

--GSIS Professor Sang-young Rhyu released a book via Yonsei University Press in Septeptember 2015, titled The Spirit of Korean Development. The book seeks to identify an explanation for Korea's miraculous development within the spirit of Korea. In examining seven success stories that emerged within Korean development, this work traces the intangible spiritual and cultural impetus of Korean growth. The book is available in Korean bookstores now, with distribution widening soon.

Silk-Road Universities Network Festival This past August GSIS 3rd semester student Nurzhamal Shabazova attended the Silk-Road Universities Network (SUN) Festival in Gyeongju, South Korea. This three-day event is designed to establish deeper cooperation and mutual understanding between nations along the Silk Road. Students and professors alike attend workshops and conferences where key challenges to the security and peace in the Silk Road region are discussed. As an alumnus from a member university of SUN, KIMEP University in Kazakstan, Nurzhamal attended the United Students of SUN (USSUN) forum. The stated goals of the group is to enhance global leadership with diverse projects such as exploring whole routes of land and sea Silk Road by cars and ships and helping those affected by natural and human caused disasters. As this was the inaugural meeting of USSUN, members meted to elect executives and delegate responsibilities. Yonsei GSIS' Nurzhamal was elected Chairwoman of the organization at this past meeting. In her own words, "During the festival and conference I came to the realization that cooperation and mutual understanding are the main driving forces to ward a safer world without violence or hostility. However, these concepts remain extremely fragile in today's world. For this very reason we have to work hard to maintain them to build a better world together!" PECC Next Generation Program Each year, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council holds a general meeting prior to the annual Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation's Economic Leaders meeting in November. This year, PECC held their 23rd annual conference in Manila, Philippines, from September 10th to the 12th, including their Next Generation Program, through which students from APEC countries are able to participate in and observe the PECC conference. The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIIEP) is the participating body from Korea, and took with it 4 students from Korea. Yonsei GSIS' 4th semester student Jiseon Chang was chosen as a participant in the 2015 Program via an essay-centered application. For the first day of the conference, Jiseon and her Korean and international peers presented and discussed on topics relevant to the general meeting, while they were able to attend the following days of the General Meeting.

ICWorld Volunteers The International Exchange and Cultural Promotion Institute is always looking for multi-lingual volunteers to help in their mission to promote Korean Culture. The institute holds various events to encourage cultural exchanges as well as ongoing opportunities for children and adults alike. 2015 Posun Memorial Symposium Program Held at Yun Posun's House, a traditional Korean Yangban family home located right next to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the 2015 Yun Posun Memorial Symposium Program will focus on Democratic Leadership and the Magna Carta. The symposium takes place on Wednesday, October 21st and will feature speakers on the UK-Korean relationship as well as the Korean Constitution in the context of the Magna Carta.
