Chapter 4: Outdoor Recreational Resources— Hampshire County
CHAPTER 4: OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL RESOURCES— HAMPSHIRE COUNTY Introduction With its rolling hills, cascading waters, deep forests, open meadows, and abundance of open space, the Route 112 Scenic Byway corridor is an extraordinary outdoor playground for residents and visitors alike. Opportunities abound in the region to hike, camp, swim, boat, cross‐country ski, hunt, fish, and cycle. In the Hampshire County section of the corridor, there are nearly 30 square miles of open space available for multiple recreational opportunities, including 5,803 acres within state forests and parks, 10,669 acres within wildlife management areas, and 1,919 acres within other significant open space lands. The greatest recreational treasures in Hampshire County include the Westfield River with its federal Wild and Scenic designation, and the extensive 7,900‐acre wilderness area created by the adjoining lands of the Knightville Dam Wildlife Management and Recreation Area, the Gilbert A. Bliss State Forest, and the Hiram H. Fox Wildlife Management Area. This Outdoor Recreational Resources chapter and accompanying map provide an inventory of recreational resources developed through a review of Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation listings, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife’s MassWildlife listings, information from the Commonwealth’s Office of Geographic and Environmental Information (MassGIS), and narratives within the Open Space and Recreation Plans of Byway towns. Resources are described here by type of facility (State Forest and Parks, and Wildlife The Westfield River Wildwater Races, an annual spring event for more Management Areas) and than 55 years, attracts boating enthusiasts from across the northeast. by type of activity (hiking trails, camping, swimming, boating, cross‐country skiing and snowshoeing, hunting and fishing, bicycling, and golfing). -

Patrick, Governor Richard K. Sullivan, Jr., Secretary John P. Murray, Commissioner Resource Management Plans provide guidance for managing properties under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). They are intended to be working documents for setting priorities, enabling the Department to adapt to changing fiscal, social and environmental conditions. The planning process provides a forum for communication and cooperation with park visitors and the surrounding communities to ensure transparency in the DCR’s stewardship efforts. As I travel the Commonwealth, I am reminded of the variety of high-quality experiences offered by DCR parks. Those within the Mount Holyoke Range Planning Unit are among the best that this state has to offer. They provide a variety of recreational opportunities, from challenging hikes along mountain ridgelines, to family picnics on a promontory overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, to taking in a summer concert in downtown Holyoke. Although they may all be visited in a single day, the true character of these parks is best revealed through repeat visits. In addition to providing outstanding recreational opportunities, these parks protect important natural and cultural resources. -
Ecoregions of New England Forested Land Cover, Nutrient-Poor Frigid and Cryic Soils (Mostly Spodosols), and Numerous High-Gradient Streams and Glacial Lakes
58. Northeastern Highlands The Northeastern Highlands ecoregion covers most of the northern and mountainous parts of New England as well as the Adirondacks in New York. It is a relatively sparsely populated region compared to adjacent regions, and is characterized by hills and mountains, a mostly Ecoregions of New England forested land cover, nutrient-poor frigid and cryic soils (mostly Spodosols), and numerous high-gradient streams and glacial lakes. Forest vegetation is somewhat transitional between the boreal regions to the north in Canada and the broadleaf deciduous forests to the south. Typical forest types include northern hardwoods (maple-beech-birch), northern hardwoods/spruce, and northeastern spruce-fir forests. Recreation, tourism, and forestry are primary land uses. Farm-to-forest conversion began in the 19th century and continues today. In spite of this trend, Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and 5 level III ecoregions and 40 level IV ecoregions in the New England states and many Commission for Environmental Cooperation Working Group, 1997, Ecological regions of North America – toward a common perspective: Montreal, Commission for Environmental Cooperation, 71 p. alluvial valleys, glacial lake basins, and areas of limestone-derived soils are still farmed for dairy products, forage crops, apples, and potatoes. In addition to the timber industry, recreational homes and associated lodging and services sustain the forested regions economically, but quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for continue into ecologically similar parts of adjacent states or provinces. they also create development pressure that threatens to change the pastoral character of the region. -

FROM THE PRESIDENT I had the pleasure of attending Friends of Connecticut State Parks Day at the state capitol on March 20th, together with Bill Doheny, past WRRPA president and current board member, and my wife, Amy. This year is the 100-year anniversary of Connecticut state parks, and there is a wonderful centennial photo display in the Legislative Office Building concourse. We spoke with representatives from 21 other volunteer groups that support our state parks, with DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty, and with our State Senator, Joseph Crisco, who has long been a strong supporter of West Rock Ridge State Park. Senator Crisco was one of the first legislators to join a new initiative supporting state parks and has “adopted” West Rock Ridge State Park; we are hopeful that our state representatives will join him in this initiative. Legislators who adopt a park agree to work with the park’s volunteer organization and with the DEEP to publicize the park and help advocate for the needs of the state park system. State parks are one of Connecticut’s most valuable natural assets. According to a 2011 UConn Economic Study, Connecticut State Parks attract over $1 billion and support over 9,000 jobs each year. Only 74 field staff are currently available to manage the 107 State Parks, and 15 of those staff are eligible for retirement in July, 2013. Because of rescissions and continued attrition, several parks will either not be opened or will have services reduced in 2013. -

Warren 2011 Abstract King Philip’s War (1675-1676) was one of the bloodiest per capita in American history. Although hostile native groups damaged much of New England, Connecticut emerged unscathed from the conflict. Connecticut’s role has been obscured by historians’ focus on the disasters in the other colonies as well as a misplaced emphasis on “King Philip,” a chief sachem of the Wampanoag groups. Although Philip formed the initial hostile coalition and served as an important leader, he was later overshadowed by other sachems of stronger native groups such as the Narragansetts. Viewing the conflict through the lens of a ‘Great Narragansett War’ brings Connecticut’s role more clearly into focus, and indeed enables a more accurate narrative for the conflict. Connecticut achieved success where other colonies failed by establishing a policy of moderation towards the native groups living within its borders. This relationship set the stage for successful military operations. Local native groups, whether allied or neutral did not assist hostile Indians, denying them the critical intelligence necessary to coordinate attacks on Connecticut towns. The English colonists convinced allied Mohegan, Pequot, and Western Niantic warriors to support their military operations, giving Connecticut forces a decisive advantage in the field. -

FAQ: HR 799 & S. 403: North Country National Scenic Trail Route Adjustment Act Exactly what does HR 799/S. 403 call for? These bills simply amend the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C. 1244(a)(8)) by: (1) Substituting new language delineating the North Country National Scenic Trail’s total length (from 3200 to 4600 miles); (2) Re-defining the eastern terminus as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Vermont; and (3) Substituting a new map reference for the original, showing the Minnesota Arrowhead and the eastern terminus extension. So what does this accomplish? H.R. 799/S. 403 completes the original vision for the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST) by extending the eastern terminus to link with the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. And, this legislation legitimizes the de-facto route of the NCNST in Minnesota since 2005, with the formal inclusion of Minnesota’s Superior Hiking, Border Route and Kekekabic Trails as officially part of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST). Wait--going from 3200 to 4600 miles sounds like a lot more than that! The original 1980 authorizing legislation contains the language “a trail of approximately 3200 miles.” This was clearly an estimate, since almost none of the NCNST had been built when the 1970’s feasibility studies estimated its length. Since then much of the NCNST has been constructed and the route identified; the trail is on the ground and we have more sophisticated tools for measuring it. As it turns out, in order to carry out Congress’ intent for the original NCNST the actual mileage is closer to 4100 miles, even without the Minnesota Arrowhead or the eastern terminus extension into Vermont (which add another 500 miles). -
