  • History of Philippine Music
PRESENTED BY: Frances Ramona Pantig Joyce Cristene Marquez Fatima Munoz Bianca Monique Bargas Fundamentals of Music 1 Fundamentals of Music 2 Filipinos are said to be Musical Peoples. In most cases, singing is accompanied by dancing. They used Bamboo canes, Palm leaves and bark of trees to write their songs and a piece of sharp stick or iron for their pen. Even their instruments were made of Bamboo and wood which indicated their primitiveness. Fundamentals of Music 3 Functions of their music: Religious Social life Characteristics of their Music: Recitative Mostly simple two note music Example of these are: | Dal-lot – a song sung by farmers during wedding, baptismal and others parties accompanied by Kutibeng (guitar). | Pamulinawen – is a love song | Dung-aw – is a song requesting a dead person to be good in his next life. Fundamentals of Music 4 Early Filipinos music was influenced by trade relations other races like: |Malays |Indonesians |Arabs |Chinese |Indo-Chinese |Japanese and |Hindus Fundamentals of Music 5 Chinese, Japanese and Hindus introduce their five-tone scale called pentatonic. The rhythmic effects through the use of gongs, drums and cymbals were brought by Hindus and Mohammedans. • Ecological Models of Musical Structure in Pop-Rock, 1950–2019
Ecological Models of Musical Structure in Pop-rock, 1950–2019 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Nicholas J. Shea, M.A., B.Ed. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee: Anna Gawboy, Advisor and Dissertation Co-Advisor Nicole Biamonte, Dissertation Co-Advisor Daniel Shanahan David Clampitt Copyright by Nicholas J. Shea 2020 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between guitar performance and the functional components of musical organization in popular-music songs from 1954 to 2019. Under an ecological theory of affordances, three distinct interdisciplinary approaches are employed: empirical analyses of two stylistically contrasting databases of popular-music song transcriptions, a motion-capture study of performances by practicing musicians local to Columbus, Ohio, and close readings of works performed and/or composed by popular- music guitarists. Each offers gestural analyses that provide an alternative to the object- oriented approach of standard popular-music analysis, as well as clarification on issues related to style, such as the socially determined differences between “pop” and “rock” music. ii Dedication To Anna Gawboy, who is always in my corner. iii Acknowledgments Here I face the nearly insurmountable task of thanking those who have helped to develop this research. Even as all written and analytical content in this document is my own, I cannot deny the incredible value collaboration has brought to this inherently interdisciplinary study. I am extremely fortunate to have a small team of individuals on which I can rely for mentorship and support and whose research backgrounds contribute greatly to the domains of this document.

  • Raimund Marasigan Takes Young Bands to Rock School
Raimund Marasigan takes young bands to rock school September 2009 There are few musicians who have achieved as much acclaim in Pinoy Rock as Raimund Marasigan. As the front man of Sandwich, drummer of Cambio, keyboardist of Pedicab, one-man techno machine in Squid 9, and co-conspirator in numerous musical projects—oh yes, and as the drummer of the Eraserheads—he has gained acclaim as a versatile multi-instrumentalist, prolific composer, and successful hit-maker. A key figure in the massive band explosion of the 90’s, Raimund says with confidence that the current band scene is on a similarly huge upswing. “Ang daming banda ngayon, madaming magagaling, and the amazing thing is, many of these kids have gotten really good at a very young age,” he enthuses. But he can see one key difference that the current rock generation has compared to the 90’s scene: rapid advancements in technology. “In the past, bands needed to have a record deal before they could have a lot people hear their work,” Raimund says. “Nowadays, with the advent of cheap audio software, YouTube, and mp3, virtually anyone with a decent desktop computer can put together songs that people will hear.” The one downside to the great access to information that the Internet provides is that it becomes harder and harder for young bands to break out and get noticed. Raimund says, “Marami silang kasabay sa scene, at madami pang bagong banda na lumalabas. You have to be really good, and you have to have great songs.” Raimund says he wants to share his knowledge and experience so that talented young bands can further hone their skills, and hopefully get that big break that everyone is going for.

  • The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990S and Beyond James Gabrillo
The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond A dissertation submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music James Gabrillo Peterhouse, University of Cambridge November 2018 This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration. I further state that no substantial part of my dissertation has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other quali- fication at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution. It does not exceed the word limit prescribed by the Degree Committee. "2 of 293" The New Manila Sound: Music and Mass Culture, 1990s and Beyond James Gabrillo Abstract This dissertation provides the first detailed account of the mass musical culture of the Philippines that originated in the 1990s and continues to be the most popular style of musical entertainment in the country — a scene I dub the New Manila Sound. Through a combination of archival research, musical analysis, and ethnographic fieldwork, my ex- amination focuses on its two major pioneers: the musical television programme Eat Bula- ga! (Lunchtime Surprise) and the pop-rock band Aegis. I document the scene’s rise and development as it attracted mostly consumers from the lower classes and influenced oth- er programmes and musicians to adapt its content and aesthetics. The scene’s trademark kitsch qualities of parody, humour, and exaggeration served as forms of diversion to au- diences recovering from the turbulent dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos from 1965 to 1986, when musical works primarily comprised of state-commissioned nationalist an- thems, Western art music, and protest songs.

The current critique attempts to read patintero, a Filipino word and game about crossing lines with its own rules, as a philosophical tool for interpreting meaning. The critique plays with patintero—which elevates it from a game to a metaphor, and into a performance applied to the film Patintero: Ang Alamat ni Meng Patalo (Patintero: The Myth of Meng the Loser, 2015, dir. Mihk Vergara). In reading the film, film is theorized according to the game which requires some form of line-towing with the viewer. The lines inscribed in patintero as film (and in the film as a game) is simultaneously drawn in the critique as a form of crossing the line that is consistent with the desire of many children, whose constant blurring of the lines between stubborness and control represents a form of crisis.
