  • PRESS RELEASE for IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 12 July 2016
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: 12 July 2016 Lea Salonga: Disney & Broadway Magic (30 September & 1 October) [12 July 2016, Hong Kong] Disney princess Lea Salonga has thrilled audiences worldwide as Jasmine and Mulan in the Disney animated classics, and has toured in the title role of the enchanting rags-to-riches fairy tale Cinderella. On stage, she has starred on Broadway in Les Misérables and created the role of Kim in Miss Saigon. Back by popular demand after her sold-out performances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) two seasons ago, Lea joins the orchestra, together with her conductor brother Gerard Salonga, in a magical concert of hits you know and love. Lea Salonga is one of the most influential Filipino women in the world. She began her career as a child star in the Philippines, making her professional debut at the age of seven in the musical The King and I. She received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Miss Saigon in 1991, Walt Disney Company also bestowed her with the honour of “Disney Legend” in 2011 for her portrayal of the beloved princesses. Gerard Salonga first collaborated with his sister when he was seven years old, when the backing tape for her performance malfunctioned and he stepped in as her impromptu piano accompanist. The siblings’ collaboration has continued, from singing and recording the song Happiness on Lea’s first album, to performing together at state dinners. The two will join forces again and, along with the HK Phil, bring the voice of Disney princesses and all-time Broadway favourites to Hong Kong audiences.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WSO Presents Three Perspectives from Musical America Winnipeg, MB – November 3, 2014 – The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) continues the theme of human rights and freedom this season with Schwarz & Copland Third, Nov 14 & 15, conducted by eminent American maestro Gerard Schwarz in his WSO debut. Clans from Lowak Shoppala’ (Fire and Light) The concert begins with Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate’s acclaimed Clans from Lowak Shoppala’ (Fire and Light) with guest narrator Justice Murray Sinclair and vocalists Cory Campbell, Andrew Balfour and Michael Thompson. This work vividly tells the story of the Chickasaw Nation, a federally recognized Native American nation, located in Oklahoma, in eight scenes that each depict a part of Chickasaw culture and history. “In old Chickasaw culture, a family clan system was maintained through matrilineal descent. Each clan had an animal name. Clans focuses on seven of these family lines – Minko, Bird, Alligator, Squirrel, Skunk, Panther and Raccoon – and incorporates numerous traditional Chickasaw melodies and rhythms,” said Tate. Music from Schindler’s List The symphony will then play three pieces from John Williams’ heart-rending film score for Schindler’s List directed by Steven Spielberg, which won the 1993 Oscar for Best Original Score, with WSO Associate Concertmaster Karl Stobbe playing the solo violin. Williams described his own mission in creating the score: “The film’s ennobling story, set in the midst of the great tragedy of the Holocaust, offered an opportunity to create not only dramatic music, but also themes that reflected the more tender and nostalgic aspects of Jewish life during these turbulent years.” Copland’s Symphony No.

\ SPU Manila INTER-OFFICE BULLETIN Vol. XII No. 26 10 December 2018 CECILE LICAD SUPPORTS ST. PAUL MUSIC THERAPY CENTER Contributed by Marilyn Abalos Acclaimed pianist, Cecile Licad, was featured at the St. Paul Manila Alumnae USA CD Launch of her latest CD, American Dreams, recently in Loida Nicolas Lewis’s residence on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The event benefitted the St. Paul Music Therapy Center, along with education scholarships and more through the Fleur-de-lis Fund. David Dubal, noted music broadcast commentator of WQXR, spoke about Cecile’s CD series. To the delight of the guests, Cecile played in a short program of Chopin’s “Etude Op. 10 No.3” (No Other Love), Gottschalk’s “Souvenirs d’ Andalousie,” and “Larawan” by Francisco Buencamino Sr., noted Filipino musician and composer and her granduncle. “Cecile Licad’s three piano pieces played with gusto and delicacy were mesmerizing! Chopin’s was romantic, Gottschalk’s was combative, and Buencamino’s was nostalgic,” Mrs. Lewis said. “What a memorable evening—the launch of Cecile’s monumental CD with fundraising for St. Paul Music Therapy Center! The introduction by WQXR David Dubal gave gravitas to the event. Bravo to everyone involved.” The event promoted Cecille’s unique selection of American piano music by Aaron Copland, Anthony Philip Heinrich, Percy Grainger, William Mason, Edward MacDowell, Arthur Farwell, Leo Ornstein, and William Grant.
