UEFA Executive Committee meeting decisions

UEFA EURO 2004™ television figures best-ever

The UEFA Executive Committee completed its meeting in , , ahead of the first UEFA EURO 2004™ semi-final tonight between hosts Portugal and the Netherlands. In doing so they reviewed the television audience figures for the tournament to date and the number of internet users on the official site of the tournament, euro2004.com, and concluded that it has been the best UEFA European Championship on record.

Cumulative live television audience figures for the top six markets during the group phase of the tournament were up 26% in comparison to EURO 2000 at 845 million, while the average live audience for a home team is up 38% and the average live audience for a neutral match is up 12.5%. euro2004.com, the official web site of the tournament, has also shown record numbers to date, although the final numbers will be announced only at the end of the tournament, the site surpassed 12 million visits and 130 million page views only three days into the tournament.

The UEFA Executive Committee also agreed on the following points:

• Approved and formalised the UEFA Committees and Expert Panels as proposed for 2004-06 • Agreed the agenda for the XIII Conference of the Presidents and General Secretaries taking place on Saturday 03 July • Heard a positive update report on the implementation of the UEFA Club Licensing system which comes into effect for the 2004-05 season • Agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding between FIFPro and UEFA in order to improve relations between the two bodies • Approved the addition of Northern Ireland, Romania and Ukraine as full members (Pro Licence) to the UEFA Convention on the Mutual Recognition of Coaching Qualifications and FYR Macedonia and Serbia-Montenegro as partial members (A Licence)

Commenting after the Executive Committee meeting on the success of UEFA EURO 2004™ to date UEFA CEO, Lars-Christer Olsson said:

“Of course we still have three matches to go before the end of this tournament but so far this has been a truly fantastic tournament, with excellent collaboration from our Portuguese hosts, great matches, good fan behaviour and a feast of top class European football on the pitch and on television. I am sure that when we have collected all the final figures at the end of tournament that we will have broken all the previous numbers we saw at EURO 2000.”
