Larsen, BA Political Science College of Arts and Sciences March 12, 2018 Faculty Mentors: John Gruhl, PhD, Political Science 1 Abstract This project sought to analyze how sexual assault in the political sphere is perceived and treated in contemporary society in the United States of America. The thesis analyzed eight cases of sexual misconduct, including six from the past thirty years. In each case, the reaction of party and social leaders, of the politician’s constituents and of the politician himself were looked at, as well as the consequences the politician faced. The results were then analyzed side-by-side to discover similarities and differences between ho cases of sexual assault allegations were treated and in terms of what happened to the politician after the allegations came out.

ABSTRACT This study examines Hillary Clinton’s public discourse at various points in her career, analyzing which rhetorical strategies she uses to build and maintain trust between herself and the American public. To do so, this study examines five moments in Clinton’s career in which she actively employs rhetoric that affects the public’s perception of Clinton as a trustworthy or untrustworthy figure. The five case studies analyzed in this study are Bill and Hillary Clinton’s 1992 interview on 60 Minutes, following accusations of Bill’s extramarital affair with Gennifer Flowers; Hillary Clinton’s tears in New Hampshire on the 2008 presidential campaign trail; Hillary’s “3am Phone Call” ad, released during the 2008 primary campaign; Hillary’s social media efforts to brand herself as a grandmother during the 2016 presidential campaign; and Hillary’s infamous email scandal that unfolded during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Flores, Ph.D. The Fourteenth Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies History Work Group Pembroke College, Oxon 18 August 2018 THE JOSEPH DILEMMA 2 Abstract Christian ministers have assumed the role of spiritual advisors to Presidents since the founding of the nation. In this capacity, they have provided pastoral counsel and public policy advice to the Commander in Chief. This peculiar marriage between Church and State has not been without criticism. In the present administration, some spiritual advisors compare themselves to the biblical Joseph who found favor with Pharaoh. At issue is that critics insist their privileged access to the President comes with a moral responsibility to speak truth to power. This paper does not attempt to resolve differences between spiritual advisors and their critics. Rather, it is concerned with how presidential spiritual advisors have functioned historically as religious lobbyists, chaplains, and members of focus groups in service of the Church and the White House. THE JOSEPH DILEMMA 3 The Joseph Dilemma The adage is true that it is lonely at the top. On May 26, 1899, President McKinley signed a personal note to himself that he later tucked into his letter book. “My belief embraces the Divinity of Christ and a recognition of Christianity as the mightiest factor in the world’s civilization.” This confession of faith, minimal as it was, was written not to estrange himself from Methodism, but to affirm that his personalized faith still resided in the Methodist communion (Leech, 462).
