The Chandler Family Association Genealogy Panel – 2011 Annual Report

The CFA Genealogy Panel considered 143 cases in 2011. Some cases were handled without submission to the panelists if a CFALD report could be provided or questions answered by Dick Chandler, GP Chairman, or Claudia Brocato, Secretary. “New” in member column indicates the inquirer joined the CFA about the same time their query was submitted to the GP or as a result of the GP’s efforts. CFALD refers to the CFA Lineages Database. DNA Group Number in bold indicates an actual DNA testee or close relative of testee. DNA Group Number with a question mark (?) indicates a supposition of genetic group. We have disguised the names of the inquirers and other living persons mentioned below to protect their privacy.

Any conclusions presented here should not be considered the final product of our research. Genealogy is a process and research will always be ongoing. If you would like to know more about any of these cases, please contact [email protected].

Visit the Chandler Family Association website at ChandlerFamilyAssociation.org for information about the Genealogy Panel, the Chandler DNA Project, the Genetic Chandler Families, and more. I guess that she is the Lottey M aged 10 who appears in the 1850 Census of Cleveland Co, NC with parents John, a Millwright aged 36, and Francis aged 30 [may be Fanny Long but not necessarily so], with siblings Mary J (8), Newton V (6) and Laban S (six months), everyone born in NC. In the 1860 Census of the same place, John is not present, Francis is 40, the others are as you would expect, and are joined by Francis C (female aged 6) and John F (4). This could suggest that John died about 1856. So, the person you should be looking for is a John Chandler (not necessarily John J) born about 1814 (not 1820). I have checked CFALD and can find no suitable John Chandler born between 1812 and 1816. At present, I would have to answer "don't know" to the question about this John's parentage.

I have had less success with finding him in the censuses. I think this is him in the 1920 Census - Francis Chandler aged 16 born Michigan as were his parents. He has no recorded occupation and is living as a lodger along with another lodger Robert Porter aged 14, in the Grand Rapids, Kent Co, Michigan home of widow Emma Jones aged 70 born Kentucky and her divorced daughters Winifred Jones (43) a beautician and Edna de Lyons (44) a masseuse. My guess is that Robert Porter is Winifred's son (the 1920 census suggests that). So Francis Chandler might be a relative too, but I simply can't find him in the 1920 census. For the record, there is a Frances T Chandler shown as female aged 6 born Michigan in the 1920 census of Decatur, Van Buren Co, Michigan. The child is shown as the granddaughter of George (57) and Laura (55) Mahoney born Michigan and Kentucky respectively. I mention this because of the Kentucky connection [Emma Jones and Laura Mahoney of similar age] though for this to have any relevance the census record of Frances' sex would have to have been incorrect.
