Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Crosfields ARLFC at the Webb Security Recreation Ground. Today, we welcome the players, supporters and officials from East Leeds, for today’s Kingstone Press NCL Division Two Round Eighteen game. The two sides met back in March, when East Leeds secured the points with virtually the last play of the game, winning 24-22 in a tight encounter. Their season hasn’t looked great since then and they are currently lying in a relegation position, but with the run in they have, I’m sure East Leeds will be confident of moving out of the zone, before the end of the season. A remarkable win last week over Beverley, 79-12 has set them up for a good finish. After today’s game, they have Shaw Cross (H and A), Askam (H), (A) and Clock Face Miner (H) to conclude the regular fixtures. Jason Priestley leads the try-scoring with 10 tries, whilst Nathan Conroy have the most goals (35), points (107) and Man of the Match awards (3). Crosfields have won 3 of the last 4 games, with notable scalps against and St Jude’s, but went down against Bradford Dudley Hill, before beating Clock Face Miner last week. Jack Reid is the talisman of the team. Leading try-scorer with 10, goal scorer with 53 and points scorer with 147. He has also picked up 6 MOM awards. Congratulations to Lewis Hall, for making the Wales Elite Training Squad for the 2021 World Cup. A big thank you to all those that helped out at the Armed Forces Day, featuring the Tom Sephton Memorial Trophy. A great day commemorating and remembering our Armed Forces. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Crosfields winning the BNFL BARLA National Cup. Throughout the season, we have been taking trips down memory lane to celebrate the achievement, thanks to the archives saved by Tom Rourke. Today, it’s the build up to the final at Central Park, Wigan. Our Sponsor Focus today is on Security Locksmiths, who have supported the club over a number of years and provide a fantastic service to their customers. I thank Danny and his team, and all our sponsors, for their continued support.

Good luck to everyone involved today. Yours in Sport, Crosfields ARLFC – Next at the Webb Security Recreation Ground

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone today to the Webb Security Recreation Ground. I hope the players and supporters of East Leeds had a good journey over the Pennines. East Leeds turned us over at their place earlier this season in a tight game, where we had opportunities to secure victory, but fell to the last play of the game. We’ll be looking to reverse that result today. Our form over the last few weeks has been good, but we still have some inconsistency, which showed against Bradford Dudley Hill, after beating Ince Rose Bridge and Wigan St Jude’s previously. It was back to winning ways last week at Clock Face Miners and the preparation we have had in the week, should see us take our good form into today’s game. Last week was good to see Jack Roper back into the fold after a long layoff through injury. Best of luck and see you after the game. Thanks, Ian. Saturday 22nd June 2019 - Crosfields 38 Wigan St Jude’s 22 Crosfields followed up their superb victory over Ince Rose Bridge, with another excellent performance, taking the scalp of Wigan St Jude’s, who had won the two previous encounters this season. Crosfields were quickly out of the blocks, forcing an error in the visitors’ first set, putting Crosfields on the front foot. Wigan’s defence held until the last tackle, when Jack Reid’s kick to the corner was fumbled and Mitch McJay was on hand to touch down. Reid converted for 6-0. Both sides were playing well, but a knock and offside from Crosfields gave St Jude’s the territory for a sustained attack. A crash ball on the last tackle saw To Owen force his way over. Gavin Rodden converted to level the scores. Crosfields hit back and forced an error to set up another attack. McJay put Dave Boden through a gap to take Crosfields close to the line, but the pas was adjudged forward. From the resulting scrum, Joey Brady broke the line and raced 90 metres to score. Rodden’s conversion gave his side a 6-12 lead. Crosfields tried to contain St Jude’s in their own half and the clearance kick on the last tackle was meant for the visitor’s winger, but the leaping Nathan Taylor clutched the ball out of the air and raced in from 60 metres. Reid converted to level the scores at 12-12. A great run from acting half by Hayden James put Crosfields in a strong position. A kick on the last was dropped by the defence and James was quickest to react and touched down. Unfortunately, the try was disallowed for offside. Crosfields kept on going, but St Jude’s defence was strong. Last tackle kicks however, were not dealt with properly. A chip to the in-goal from Reid was knocked back by Jordan Williams and Luke Walker pounced to score. 16-12. 5 minutes before the break, Crosfields worked steadily downfield and Dan Reid went close out wide. A quick Tom Millington play the ball had the defence standing still and Tom Millington’s charge saw him crash over the line, for a half time score Crosfields 20 Wigan St Jude’s 12. Crosfields ARLFC – Round Fifteen – Second Half

Saturday 22nd June 2019 - Crosfields 38 Wigan St Jude’s 22 Crosfields started well and Millington continued his good form, with a great break, only to be felled by a high tackle. Soap opened up the game and swift hands from James and Reid on the last tackle, saw them bring the three-quarters into play to stretch St Jude’s defence and Dan Reid benefitted scoring in the corner. J Reid kicked the conversion from the touch-line for 26-12. WSJ continued to work hard in both defence and attack. The big props had proved troublesome going forward and when Aaron Smith freed his arms in a tackle, he found Rodden with the offload. Rodden finished off from half-way to reduce the arrears at 26- 16. The visitors were on the score sheet again minutes later, this time Rodden turned provider, as his well timed pass put Reece Dan Reid Matthews trough a gap and he finished from the half-way. Rodden converted to put his side just one score behind, at 26-22. It was nip and tuck for the next 20 minutes, with defences manging to hold out the opposition’s attack. Jordan Williams helped break the deadlock, as he broke through. A superb off-load in the tackle found the supporting James who went under the posts in a 60 metre play. Reid converted for a 10-point lead at 32-22. No matter how hard WSJs tried, the Crosfields defence remained resolute. A great ball steal from Brad Stanway, stopped the Wigan onslaught and put his team on the attack. Crosfields steadied the ship and worked their way towards the try line. Running the ball on the last, Reid and James combined to put John Whittaker over and seal another excellent victory. Reid converted to complete the scoring. Crosfields 38 Wigan St Jude’s 22. Jack Reid again orchestrated the team well, with excellent last tackle play proving to be invaluable. Everyone again contributed to a very good team performance, which should only boost the confidence for the games ahead. Jordan Williams Hayden James took the man of the match performance, with his sound defence and dynamic running from acting half catching the eye. Crosfields ARLFC – Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington Cup Semi-Final – First Half

Wednesday 26th June 2019 - Crosfields 42 Latchford Albion 6 Crosfields progressed to the final of the Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington Cup in impressive form, with a 42-6 victory over Latchford Albion. It was 10 minutes before the opening score, which went against the run of play. Latchford were on the attack, but a kick on the last went dead in-goal and Nathan Taylor picked up for a quick 20m tap, with the opposition on the back foot. Further carries took play deep into Latchford territory and then good work from the three- quarters on the last tackle created enough room for Taylor to finish in the corner. Albion’s response was swift and productive. Breaking down the left, Latchford were in a dangerous attacking position. A kick to the corner on the last was not dealt with by the Soap defence and Reece Forrest picked up Nathan Taylor the loose ball to score. Matt Barker converted to give his side a 4-6 lead. Crosfields regrouped and a penalty helped their cause as they moved easily downfield. Soap again moved the ball wide, through the back-row and three-quarters and Danny Garcia-O’Brien fed Taylor, who sprinted forward and finished spectacularly in Makinson-esque style, in the corner. 8-6 The end to end rugby continued, but Latchford’s reliance on a “kick on the last” became their undoing, when Taylor judged the bouncing ball to perfection and raced 80m to complete a 12-minute hat-trick. 12-6. Soap started to dominate proceedings and Garcia made good ground to put his team on the front foot. John Whittaker followed up and chipped over the defence and Taylor was on hand to collect the ball and score his and Crosfields fourth try. 16-6. Crosfields expansive play was causing problems for the opposition. Another double set, saw Latchford tire and Soap took full advantage, moving the ball briskly through the three-quarters, creating space for Luke Walker to Danny Garcia-O’Brien score. Walker then converted his own try for a half time score of Crosfields 22- Latchford Albion 6. Crosfields ARLFC – Stuart Middleton Foundation Warrington Cup Semi-Final – Second Half

Wednesday 26th June 2019 - Crosfields 42 Latchford Albion 6 It was a tight opening to the second half, with defences nullifying attacks, until Brad Stanway pounced on a loose ball 20m from the opposition line to set up another onslaught. Jack Reid had controlled the game from acting half, bringing on the forwards to drive in and releasing the backs to play out wide. He stood up to hit the powerful charge of Tom Brown, but dummied and went under the posts unopposed. Walker converted for 28-6. Crosfields dominance increased, but Latchford worked hard, in an effort to stay in the game. The home side forced a knock on deep in Albion territory and the forwards again set the platform for the three-quarters to open up the stretched defence and send Taylor in for his fifth try. 32-6. Latchford picked themselves up and launched a sustained attack, keeping the ball alive at every opportunity, trying to find a chink in the Crosfields armoury. But the Crosfields defence held firm and gradually worked their way out of their own half. A delicate chip from Jack Reid to Dan Reid, saw Dan step his opposite number and score in the corner. 36-6. With time running out Reid fed Matt Barber close to the line. Barber looked to be stopped by two defenders, but he twisted in the tackle and grounded the ball. Stanway stepped up to convert and a Dan Reid final score of Crosfields 42 Latchford Albion 6. Another excellent team performance from Crosfields. Five tries from Nathan Taylor, who looked dangerous throughout, whilst Jack Reid controlled the game from acting half and deservedly took the man of the match award. Crosfields ARLFC – Round Sixteen

Saturday 6th July 2019 - Bradford Dudley Hill 28 Crosfields 6

After three excellent victories, Crosfields were unable to overcome Bradford Dudley Hill. The victory took BDH up to 5th place in the league, leaving Crosfields in 8th, 3 points behind and Beverley. The home side opened the better and a repeat set put them on the front foot and Seb Russo put Adam Jefferson over, after 6 minutes. Callum Bacon converted. Crosfields worked their way into the game and began playing some open rugby. Unfortunately, a wide ball deep into BDH territory was intercepted by Ryan Dickinson, who raced 70 metres, before being hauled down. With Crosfields defence scrabbling, the home side moved the ball right for ?? To go over. Bacon converted for a 12-0 lead. Danny Garcia BDH dominated possession and the Soap defence worked overtime, but eventually cracked just after the half hour, when a chip through was collected by Ryan Montgomery for the try. Bacon’s conversion was the final score of the first half, which finished at 18-0. After the restart, Jordan Williams was despatched to the sin-bin for retaliation. Although the line remained intact for that period, the defence was over-worked. Bacon finally broke through for an individual effort, which he converted, for a 24-0 lead. A skirmish on 66 minutes led to Matt Barber and Antony Lawton being sin-binned. BDH made the most of this and Elliott Cousins crossed. 28-0. Crosfields were finally rewarded with a set play from a scrum 40 metres out. Jack Reid fed Luke Walker, who scorched Tom Millington past his opposite number, drawing in the winger, before feeding Aaron Holliday, who stepped inside two defenders for a try. Reid converted for a final score of BDH 28 Crosfields 6 Crosfields ARLFC – Round Seventeen – First Half

Saturday 13th July 2019 - Clock Face Miners 28 Crosfields 36

Crosfields came out on top in a tense game, in which the lead changed hands several times, before Jack Reid secured victory with a try with just a minute to go. Clock Face Miners scored within a minute, through Karle Hunt, who broke through out wide and raced under the posts. Ian Webster converted for the ideal start. Soap quickly hit back. Following a kick downfield, Dan Reid forced his opposite number into touch. From the scrum, Crosfields set about the CFM’s line. Quick hands from Hayden James, Brad Stanway and John Whittaker, found Jack Roper, who stretched over to score on his return to the first team. Jack Reid converted to level the Jack Roper scores. CFM re-took the lead when they moved the ball along the line and Tommy Taylor went in. 10-6. Half way through the first half Crosfields took the lead. Tom Millington led the way with a clearing drive, to put the opposition on the back foot. Then Matt Barber bull-dozed his way through the middle and found the supporting John Whittaker, who finished off the play under the sticks. Reid converted 10-12. Crosfields started to look comfortable and the ball was moved around, stretching the home side. Quick hands again from James, Stanway and Whittaker to Roper. This time Roper put Dan Reid free to score out wide. 10-16. Millington was sin-binned for a professional foul and the home side took advantage. A kick through was collected by Webster for a try, which he duly converted to level the scores at 16-16. Half time. John Whittaker Crosfields ARLFC – Round Seventeen – Second Half

Saturday 13th July 2019 - Clock Face Miners 28 Crosfields 36 Crosfields were quicker out of the blocks at the start of the second half. Reid kicked high on the last tackle and Whittaker challenged his opposite number for the ball, which came loose. Reid picked up and fed Mitch McJay, who drew the last line of defence, before handing on to Luke Walker, who strolled in. 16-20. CFM hit back again, moving the ball wide themselves and catching Crosfields cold, as Webster went in again at the corner. 20-20 Crosfields thought that they has re-taken the lead, but were penalised for offside and the following minute CFM were over, when a high kick was collected and fed to Hunt for the try. Jack Highcock converted for a 26-20 lead. Jack Reid A penalty from Highcock, on 59 minutes extended the home side’s lead at 28-20. Crosfields settled down and strong drives from Barber and Millington, the latter with a superb offload to Whittaker, put Crosfields on the front foot. The ball moved to McJay, who ran through over the defence for a try. 28-24 Crosfields increased the pressure forcing a drop out to get a repeat set. A rare penalty also helped matters. Reid dummied close to the line, then sent Millington over on his inside. Reid converted to put his side narrowly in front at 28-30. With barely a minute left on the clock, a great kick return from Roper, was followed by a surging run from Jordan Williams. Millington took the ball up and fed Reid, who dummied both ways, before bouncing off CFM’s 16 to go over. His conversion was the final play of the game, which secured the two points with a hard fought victory at 28-36. Both teams worked hard throughout and either side could have taken the spoils. Crosfields showed more confidence at the Luke Walker end of the game and Jack Reid controlled the final efforts. Karle Hunt was man of the match for CFM, whilst Tom Millington earned the award for Crosfields. Crosfields ARLFC – Kit Sponsor – Today Team Crosfields ARLFC – Today’s Teams

It was after England’s cricket team had so gloriously won the Ashes in 2005 that the Time’s arts critic (I think it was Rachel Campbell- Johnston) penned a piece reflecting on how sport can offer high drama which is often beyond the reach of purveyors of fiction. “You couldn’t make it up” is a well-worn cliché and the reason it’s so well-worn is that it’s true, certainly where sport is concerned. Take last Sunday. Campbell-Johnston’s comments came to mind when, after having filed the last of my copy for League Express, I was able to watch, with my youngest son Jack, the last few overs of the Cricket World Cup Final. My wife Julia, meanwhile, was in the kitchen taking in the Wimbledon Men’s final. Both contests, of course, went right down to the wire, with the game between Roger Federer and eventual winner Novak Djokovic only being settled 13-12 on a third-set tie break, and a Super Over being utilised unsuccessfully to settle the cricket, England and New Zealand finishing exactly level on runs and the hosts lifting the trophy through having hit more boundaries. There was also the incident in which the ball bounced off the bat of the diving Ben Stokes and crossed the boundary to turn two runs into six, while Trent Boult had previously caught Stokes out but stepped on the boundary rope. You really couldn’t make it up. Any novelist sending such a story to his publisher would have it sent back with his or her manuscript marked, probably in red, to the effect “rein it in a bit, old love”. We’re used to dramatic finales in , of course. Only four days earlier New South Wales edged Queensland in the State of Origin decider, winning 26-20 in the closing seconds after the Maroons had levelled from 20-8 down. I’d planned to watch that game `live’ but, having been unable to do that, had recorded the game with the aim of watching it later without knowing the outcome, a la the `Likely Lads’ (I’m showing my age there). Fat chance. I switched on last Thursday night’s coverage of the Hull FC v London Broncos game a little earlier than I should have done and couldn’t avoid hearing a reference to the Origin game. Fortunately for me, though, I misunderstood it, so my enjoyment wasn’t undermined. We’re used to pulsating finales in Rugby League, in fact sport as a whole seems to be throwing up more of them than ever before, for which we should be grateful. There’s nothing worse than one-sided contests. Have too many of them and a sport will surely wither away, although there are exceptions. I had Saturday’s Women’s Wimbledon Final on the telly in the background as I worked on news stories for League Express but I picked up on the drama and left my desk for the finale and the aftermath. The overwhelming triumph over Serena Williams by Simona Halep was fantastic, and another crucial component of a very memorable sporting weekend. But, generally, spectators are inspired by nail-biters, not by one-sided games. And they certainly got those last week! Crosfields ARLFC – Partners & Sponsors Crosfields ARLFC – Player Stats

Soap youngster currently a academy player has been selected for the Wales Elite train on Squad for the next 2 years. Wales head coach has named an elite train-on squad for the next two years. Kear will use the 35-man elite train-on squad to select players for this autumn’s 9s World Cup and next year’s European Championship. The elite train-on squad has been created for 2019 and 2020 to bring together a pool of elite Welsh players, focusing on developing a competitive side for the 2021 World Cup. There are seven current stars who all came through Wales Rugby League’s elite player pathway programme, including St Helens’ and . London Broncos’ Elliot Kear has been reappointed as captain, with club teammate Rhys Williams, the leading try-scorer of all time and joint-leading cap holder, also included. After qualifying for the 2021 World Cup last autumn, Wales will travel to Sydney to take part in the 9s World Cup at Parramatta Lewis Hall Eels’ Bankwest Stadium on October 18 and 19. The final squad will be announced closer to the time of the tournament. Kear’s men will then return to full, 13-a-side internationals in 2020 as they compete with France, Ireland and Scotland for the European Championship. “We had a really positive international campaign last year and it was great to see a young, hungry Welsh side performing well,” Kear said. “It’s really important that we spend time together and continue to develop so that’s the reason we’ve formed this elite group. “As well as meeting up each autumn for international fixtures, we’re going to be spending a lot more time with each other as a group for team-building exercises. “We already have a number of players who are performing well at the top level, but we have plenty of talent and potential throughout the squad. “I’m really excited to see how this talented squad develops over the next couple of years as we build towards the 2021 World Cup.” Crosfields ARLFC – Kit Sponsor – Millennium Supplies Ltd Crosfields ARLFC – Fixtures, Results & League Tables

Soldiers League The Charity Commission granted Soldiers League entry to the public register of charities on 16 May 2018, with a registered number of 1178408. Soldiers League was originally founded in 2007. Its continuing aims are to be an Alumni Association for all serving or retired soldiers who have played or officiated at Rugby League within the British Army, in order to promote, foster and maintain links between the Association’s members and encourage their support for Army Rugby League representative teams and thus to use the profile of Army Rugby League to raise money for Armed Forces Charities. Since its inception, the growth in services’ charitable needs has been reflected in the growth in fund raising activities undertaken by Soldiers League members and supporters. To ensure that independent oversight could be given to the funds raised and that donors could be confident that the appropriate probity and audit structures were in place, the Soldiers League executive committee decided to apply for charitable status, which has now been granted. The Goal The number one goal is to get Dan better. However, life keeps moving and doesn’t stop for anyone, so over the foreseeable future, Dan will have bills to pay and doesn’t have money coming in. The GoFundMe page was created for a prosthetic leg, which start at about £5,000 for a basic leg. Given that Dan is immensely outgoing, active and not to mention still very young and has a long life to live, a prosthetic leg for Dan is going to cost upwards of £15,000-£30,000.
