A BRIEF PRESENTATION About the National Palace of Culture

The National Palace of Culture - Congress Centre (NPC) is one of the largest multi-purpose ven- ues in Southeastern . It has an area of 123 000 m2 on eight floors above ground and three un- derground levels.

The Palace was officially opened in 1981 to celebrate the 1300th Anniversary of the Bulgarian State. It was designed to host international conventions, summits, official meetings, exhibitions, festivals, concerts and a wide range of other cultural events.

The Palace houses one of the most distinguished Bulgarian collections of visual arts designed by some of the most prominent artists of the country. These monumental works are set into the halls and foyers and are an integral part of NPC conceptual architecture and design.

Nowadays, the National Palace of Culture seeks to give new dynamics to its environment by establishing a diverse contemporary art spaces that are meant to shape Sofia’s cultural life.

NPC is situated in the heart of Sofia and is surrounded by a leisure park. The venue is encircled by terraces offering panoramic views over the capital. It is within walking distance to all central places of Sofia. The Square in front of NPC provides access to the subway and other means of public transport.

Theatre Azaryan is a newly founded theatre space in Sofia, and it is part of the large-scale cultural ini- tiatives of the National Palace of Culture. Well-known artists who perform on stages across Bulgaria and Europe associate their work with this curator project.

The theatre provides space for young artists who shape the new trends in the performing arts. Theatre Azaryan has the ambition to bring together a wide group of artists to fulfill a joint social, cultural and aesthetic idea and thus to set a creative ambience with utmost involvement of the audience.

The stage of the theatre is a unique one. It allows for a completely new approach in the way how artists perform and presupposes more intimacy in perception that transforms the theatre experience, challeng- ing the existing expectations, as well as the intellectual and emotional models set by the audience.

Peroto Literature Club Peroto is the first literary space in Bulgaria, which brings together all friends, authors and publishers of first-class literature worldwide. The club which is designed to be the meeting point for various book clubs, discussions, conversations, brainstorm activities and a place where literature context is generated, is aimed to become a real home of the book where inspiration could be even found in the hot cup of coffee or glass of wine served by the friendliest persons in Sofia.

Peroto could be your book store, library or book club, where you can start or spend your whole day filled with creative energy. This is the place you can meet a favorite writer, a new friend, or maybe the place where you start your first novel.

National Book Centre The National Book Center (NBC) is a part of the production activities of the NPC. It aims to support the publishing of Bulgarian authors, presenting Bulgarian publishers abroad and translating contemporary Bulgarian literature. It hosts discussions with the goal to encourage the reading and writing of Bulgarian literature, book publishing, critique etc. The NBC awards one of the most prestigious literature prizes in Bulgaria – “Peroto”.

The Production Center of the NPC The Production Center of the NPC brings together experts in all fields of the arts – music, cinema, the- atre and performing arts, contemporary dance and performance, literature and visual arts.

The Production Centre develops productions of the NPC such as concerts, exhibitions, installations, theatrical performances, film festivals and performances. Among the projects of the Centre are the well known Cinemania, the New Year’s Music Festival, the Art Galleries Assembly, the “Migrating Body” pro- gramme and many others.

Cinemania Cinemania is one of the most prominent film events in Bulgaria. For the 31 years of its existence the festival has become one of the most expected events which has its faithful audience.

Each year new titles representing one of the most reputable and valuable movies from the world cinema released in the last two years, and not shown in Bulgaria, have been placed in its programme. Cinemania has a very precise selection and every year the festival builds on its programme in order to become more attractive for the audience.

Cinemania is not seeking for a definition. November is the time of the year when you meet the various faces of the cinema. Every visit to the cinema is a new memorable experience. 34 35 New Year’s Music Festival Art Galleries Assembly

The New Year’s Music Festival is beloved and expected by the audience in Sofia. In the NPC there are over 80 monumental works of art displayed, designed especially for the interior of the Palace by prominent Bulgarian artists in the second half of the 20th Century such as: Dechko Uzu- nov, Marin Varbanov, Svetlin Rusev, Teofan Sokerov, Anton Donchev, Dimitar Kirov, Ivan Kirkov, Hristo Stefanov and others.
