The Hanshin Tigers defeated the Hiroshima Carp 3-2 on Monday to clinch their first Central League pennant in 18 years. "It's an amazing experience," said Hanshin fan Yukiko Nakamura, who joined in the celebrations next to the river. "I never thought this day would come." They struggled to a 4-11 record during a three-week road trip in August, but any fears that this was the much-anticipated summer swoon were quickly put to rest when the team returned home in the last week of August and put together an extended winning streak. As a reminder of their troubled past, the Tigers lost five out of six games before Monday's win. What made this pennant-winning season all the more enjoyable to Tiger fans was that it was achieved at the expense of the defending Japan Series champion Yomiuri Giants, Japan's most popular team and Hanshin's historical rival. In the absence of Hideki Matsui, who signed with the New York Yankees in the offseason, Yomiuri was exposed as an aging, lackluster outfit in need of a major overhaul. Unlike the free-spending Giants, the Tigers patiently built their championship team from the ground up. Of the regular starters this season, only outfielder Tomoaki Kanemoto played for a different team last season. Among their starting nine, Akahoshi best represents Hanshin's scrappy, in-your-face style. The 27-year-old Akahoshi has provided the spark for Hanshin's offense all season. His 55 stolen bases are by far the most in the league and along with infielder Makoto Imaoka and catcher Akihiro Yano, the three have led the Central League in batting for much of the season. Former San Diego Padres infielder George Arias, meanwhile, has put together his best season in Japan and with 34 homers is tied for the league lead with Tyrone Woods of the BayStars. The victory was also sweet revenge for manager Senichi Hoshino, who has made a career out of beating the Giants. Hoshino was on the mound as a pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons in 1974 when his team put an end to the Giants' streak of nine straight Japan Series titles. "It's a thrill to clinch the pennant here before our home fans," said Hoshino. "But I want to thank the Hanshin fans in Nagoya, Tokyo and throughout Japan." E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. The novel Kafka on the Shore is one of the most enigmatic works of contemporary writer Haruki Murakami. Since its very release, critics and scholars have been sharing their impressions and interpretations on various aspects of the book, one of them being the abundant references to Western elements (myths, songs, writers, icons and so forth). The present paper is the final draft of the postdoctoral research ‘Murakami on the shore: the dialogue with the West in the construction of the novel’, developed from July 2015 to June 2016. It aims at rethinking (as well as questioning) the way the study of the relation between Japan and the West can be addressed in the novel. The research, conducted as a bibliographical investigation, used key concepts like cultural identity (Hall, 2006) and border-blurring (Auestad, 2008). It defies the tendency of studying cosmopolitan authors like Haruki Murakami from the perspective of East-West duality, and defends that such analysis ought to consider East and West as complementary, almost inextricable, not regarding them as opposite or impermeable, and never as a limitation to the author himself. Kim Jennifer Fulton 2017 i Abstract This thesis, composed of a collection of poetry and a critical essay, explores the contemporary elegiac poem. Whereas traditional elegists focused on death, contemporary elegiac poems deal with loss in a broader sense. The challenge contemporary elegiac poets take on is to engage with feeling but without veering into sentimentality. In the critical portion of this thesis, “‘Comic self-consciousness’: Oblique approaches to the elegiac,” I explore how two contemporary poets, Billy Collins and William Matthews, approach loss indirectly to evade sentimentality. Specifically, I argue that Collins and Matthews, both of whom are noted for their elegiac orientation and their use of wit, engage with loss through three strategies: the postponement of acknowledging the loss central to the poem, the use of incongruities manifesting as humour and irony, and by gaining the reader’s complicity through the use of metapoetics. In the creative portion of the thesis, “Farewell, My Lovely,” I have drawn inspiration from the strategies modelled by these two poets to engage with at times light-hearted or ironic approaches to loss—via wit, irony and at times metapoetics—to produce a collection of elegiac lyric poems that approach loss indirectly.

In one case, fans happily accept league expansion, soaring attendance figures, even exciting home run races as evidence that all is well in this best of all possible baseball worlds. In the other case, the same evidence can be seen as mirroring the desperate last flailing of a dying institution – or at least one on the edge of losing any recognizable character as the great American national pastime. Big league baseball’s modern-era television spectacle – featuring overpaid celebrity athletes, rock-concert stadium atmosphere, and the recent plague of steroid abuse – has labored at attracting a new free-spending generation of fans enticed more by notoriety than aesthetics, and consequently it has also succeeded in driving out older generations of devotees once attracted by the sport’s unique pastoral simplicities. Anyone assessing the business health and pop-culture status of the North American version of professional baseball must pay careful attention to the fact that better than forty percent of today’s big league rosters are now filled with athletes who claim their birthright as well as their baseball training or heritage outside of the United States.
