Wolfsburg (17 April 2014). Thoroughbred racing engine replaces production-based power train: the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship heralds a new era for Volkswagen. More performance and improved drivability – out goes the old 210-hp generation of Formula 3 engines, in comes the new 225-hp generation. Nine drivers will line up with the newly developed power train from Wolfsburg when the Formula 3 European Championship gets underway in Silverstone, Great Britain (18/04–20/04). Meanwhile, the national series that form the foundation for the European Championship will run the tried-and-tested Formula 3 engines. The conventional units will continue to be used in both the British Formula 3 Championship and the German ATS Formula 3 Cup, in which Volkswagen is also involved as engine supplier.

“The new engine regulations in Formula 3 offer Volkswagen a fantastic opportunity to further demonstrate its technical expertise in this important junior class,” said Director Jost Capito. “Volkswagen has developed a lot of outstanding, thoroughbred racing engines recently. We have won the Rally Dakar on three occasions with TDI technology. The ‘Global Race Engine’ for last year’s was instrumental in ensuring that all three World Championship titles went to Wolfsburg at the first attempt. We have now incorporated all of our expertise in the development of the Formula 3 engine, and are excited to see how it fares against our direct rivals at the highest level.”

Following in the footsteps of Senna and Co. – in the British Formula 3 Championship

Throughout its history, the British Formula 3 Championship has acted as a springboard into Formula One for many young drivers. These include such illustrious names as , Jackie Stewart, , , , , , Mika Häkkinen and , who all went on to win the Formula One World Championship. And another ‘graduate’ is currently making waves at the pinnacle of motor racing – , who claimed the 2009 Formula 3 title in Great Britain whilst “powered by Volkswagen”.

In 2014, several teams are once again putting their faith in Volkswagen Power. Among the outfits running the tried-and-tested Volkswagen power trains that comply with conventional Formula 3 regulations is . As well as six rounds in Great Britain, the British Formula 3 Championship calendar also includes a trip to Spa-Francorchamps (B) – as a partner series of the 24-hour race for GT cars.

The premier league of Formula 3 – new engine concept for the ATS Formula 3 Cup

The fastest Formula racing series in Germany is employing a new engine concept in 2014. After Volkswagen provided a standard engine with Push-to-pass technology (“Volkswagen Power Engine”) for the past two seasons, the teams line up with thoroughbred Formula 3 engines in 2014. The power trains used in the F3 European Championship up until 2013 are now permitted.

As well as Van Amersfoort Racing, the ADM Motorsport, Amkon Motorsport, Lotus, and JBR Motorsport & Engineering teams will also run Volkswagen engines in the 2014 ATS Formula 3 Cup. The calendar includes outings at five permanent racetracks in Germany: Oschersleben, the Lausitzring, Hockenheim, the Nürburgring and the Sachsenring. Spielberg (Austria) will host the only round held abroad.
