Welcome to the Santa Anita Train Depot for a summer night lled with mystery!

Since our founding in 2008, Unbound Productions has grown from producing Wicked Lit annually during the Halloween season to a year-round theatre company with a thriving Membership base and an ever-expanding group of phenomenal artists. It is always exciting for us to unveil a new “Lit,” and after Wicked Lit and History Lit, we are thrilled to partner with the County Arboretum and Botanic Garden and the LA County Arboretum Foundation to present the inaugural Mystery Lit production: Holmes, Sherlock and the Consulting Detective.

Tonight’s play was originally commissioned with support from the City of Pasadena Cultural A airs Department. Developmental staged readings of the play have been presented throughout the Southland including the Pasadena Central Library, Sherlocks in Brentwood at Contrapuntal Performance Hall, the Huntington Library, and right here at the Santa Anita Train Depot. It’s been a long and fruitful journey for this play, and we are thrilled to nally present it fully produced in an ideal immersive environment.

We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with the Arboretum and to stage Holmes in this fantastic venue. The Santa Anita Train Depot is simply gorgeous! We hope that this turns out to be the beginning of a long and symbiotic relationship between Unbound and the Arboretum.

Finally, with Wicked Lit 2017 just around the corner and the continued growth of our education program, we expect this to be another tremendous year for our company. As always, thank you for taking the ride along with us!

Enjoy the show, Paul Millet, Jonathan Josephson and Je G. Rack Sta of Unbound Productions

ML-13 ART FROM FALLEN TREES DECEMBER 1–10, 2017

Presenting Sponsor

Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden 301 North Baldwin Avenue; Arcadia, CA 91007 Visit arboretum.org or call 626.821.3237 for details. Everything’s Coming Up Holmes-es a note from Jonathan Josephson, playwright

Those of us who write plays for Unbound Productions are often asked “which comes rst - the story that you want to adapt or the venue where you want to stage the play?” After all, Unbound’s mission is to produce site-specic, immersive adaptations of timeless stories so it stands to reason that one of those two things would be in place, or at least in mind, before undertaking the creative e ort that is writing a new play. Well with this piece, it wasn’t either of these things that served as the springboard... it was a third, also critical factor to the playwriting process: panic.

Panic, fear and a really critical deadline.

I received an Individual Artist Grant from the City of Pasadena Arts Commission in 2014 to write an evening-length Sherlock Holmes adaptation for Unbound’s rst-ever Mystery Lit production, but at that time, I wasn’t sure which stories (or novel?) I wanted to adapt. At rst I was going to tackle an adaptation of The Hounds of the Baskervilles, but it turns out that that has been done many times by playwrights far more established than myself. For a while I tinkered with a “Sherlock Was Wrong” play that undid several of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories by revealing faulty logic in a number of Mr. Holmes’ more convoluted cases, but it was dicult to nd a plot that could sustain that sort of literary dramaturgy.

So I read and reread dozens of the Holmes stories, seeking out a through-line or insight that I had missed in one of my rst times through the canon. Beyond that, I wanted a concept - a reason to newly adapt a Sherlock Holmes story when they’ve all been so regularly tapped as source material for plays, as well as for the small and large screens. As I played with concepts and drafts, the clock was ticking, and I owed the City of Pasadena and Unbound Productions a play. In fact, a public staged reading was already on the books and accepting reservations... before a page of this play had been written.

Three weeks before the rst public reading of what would become Holmes, Sherlock, and The Consulting Detective, I had my concept. I would attempt to address how Mr. Holmes does it, how one man can know everything he knows and be everywhere he is without defying the laws of human cognition and time travel as we know it. And when I connected the through- line of photography between “A Scandal in Bohemia” and “The Red-Headed League” and then the “dark room” of “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches,” my plot began to take shape. From there, all I needed was to invent a few characters, merge a few others, feature a few of my favorite personalities from the Sherlockian universe, and we had a play! Three years of pondering, four public readings and hundreds of hours of rewrites later, I’m very proud of the wild theatrical romp that is this piece, I hope you enjoy it as well.

Thank you to this incredible cast and production team for bringing this play to life with such magic, tenacity and skill.

Thank you City of Pasadena for your of support artists in your city.

Thank you Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for your wit and imagination.

And thank you for coming out this evening!

Rack Schools Program Unbound sta and teaching artists conduct free, comprehensive, interactive playwriting workshops with students in Pasadena public high schools who have no or little other access to arts education. These workshops culminate with students writing dramatic adaptations of classic short stories which are then performed by a group of Unbound’s professional actors. Our workshops have been developed in conjunction with seasoned public school educators and with insight from the Pasadena Unied School District. The sessions focus on literary and theatrical vocabulary, text analysis, creative writing, expression and investigative learning. Unbound provides this program to schools free of charge.

This program needs support in order to continue! Contact Jonathan at [email protected] for information on how you can get involved.
