Writing in the ancient past sometimes makes it difficult to explain everyday terms. Terefore, I have taken certain lib- erties so that the reading is not burdened by linguistic gym- nastics. My employment of anachronistic terms is meant to convey the meaning rather than striving for historical accu- racy. I hope that you, reader, will come along for the ride, even as you notice that certain concepts may not have existed over three thousand years ago. Here are some examples. KLLISTU he rumblings begin soon afer the afernoon prayers and supplications to the holy Trikaia— the three principal gods of the Atalanni—the T Great God of the Seas, Goddess Mother of Earth, and Sky Father. First, the Earth shakes gently, like a mother’s loving cradling of her infant, but as the minutes wear, the kindness makes way to anger, and the beautiful, paterned foor begins to crack. Te priests look in horror as one of the two thirty-foot bronze statues of the sacred bull, positioned on the side of the inner sanctum, topples and crashes into the limestone column next to it, bringing the column down and crushing an altar boy who is frantically trying to make his way out. Te blue-orange frescoes of the chamber—bulls, dancers, warriors, trees, birds, boats, and deer—crack, and their glory dims as if a young woman’s face has aged in an instant. But the most wondrous scene is that there is now a gap- ing hole in the earth near the fallen bull. Bright orange liquid oozes from it, burning the ceremonial garments draped around the fallen statue. Preview Copy. Please Do Not Circulate. 14 “Run!” Te head priest screams, and he, along with two men and two women, make swif strides across the polished basalt causeway that connects the temple to the mainland. It is a mile to safety. Few are on the causeway today, for it is the day of pray- ers, and royalty, nobles, warriors. Commoners are forbid- den to visit the temple complex and the holy island. Te men and women run as fast as they can as cracks open be- neath their feet. Te sea churns, splashing foamy water on them. One man screams as a wave rises from the side and grabs him. It is as if the sea and earth are locked in a ferocious wres- tling match. In the holding pens in the back corner of the complex, sacrifcial bulls and goats create a ruckus and bellow in fear. Te crashing waves and shaking earth drowns the panic and pleading from the prisoners destined to be sacrifced along with the animals. Manacled and shackled, the condemned shout for the guards and pull on their metal cuffs until their skin rips and bleeds raw. Teir pleas go unheard as waves come crashing through their cell windows. Te roof collapses, ending their lives before their blood is spilled before the gods of the Atalanni. Te head priest glances behind him as he runs. Te glo- rious one-thousand-column colonnade is still holding up, even though some of the proud ffy-foot tall columns are groaning as the ground beneath them continues to shake and shif. Te colonnade roof has cracked, and the head priest prays for it not to come crashing down. Tey reach Preview Copy. Please Do Not Circulate. 15 the end of the causeway within minutes, gasping for breath, with soldiers and other concerned citizens ushering them on. Te head priest is the frst to arrive at the rock-cut steps. As he springs up, he hears the screams of his acolytes and the crashing of a column. King Hannuruk looks at the destruction with despair. He wonders what caused the earth to shake and fre to ooze from the ground, that too on the sacred day of prayers! Han- nuruk’s leathery, pock-marked face twitches uncontrollably. He turns to Rishwa, his long-serving advisor and Prime Minister. “None of my ancestors suffered such devasta- tion!” “Yes, Your Majesty.” “Tis is not the frst time that the ground has displayed anger—the last time the earth rumbled a few summers ago I even built new shrines and decorated the temple complex with breathtaking opulence,” he complains biterly. “Tat is true, Your Majesty,” Rishwa says, allowing the King to vent his frustration. “I have offered sacrifces of deer, birds, bulls. Even peo- ple!” Hannuruk says, slapping on the windowsill. Rishwa nods. He is aware that the King had gone against the advice of his priests when he had turned to human sac- rifce. Preview Copy. Hannuruk has heard tales of the Kingdom’s ancient past, that long ago the earth had shaken too, and that great plumes of ash and fre had been ejected from the ground, but that was when the Atalanni had angered the gods by building palaces and towns, but not monuments of worship. Since then the Kings had built numerous temples, and fnally Hannuruk’s grand- father had spent many summers constructing the most mag- nifcent temple complex in all of the world, the temple of the Trikaia—Great God of the Seas, Goddess Mother of Earth, and the Sky Father—and Hannuruk’s father had further in- creased its magnifcence. What gods would not like what the Atalanni had built for them? What about the magnifcent central temple with the gi- ant bronze statues of the gods? And what about the ringed canals that channeled the sea around them into teal and green glory that encircled the temple? What of the greatest inner harbor in all of the earth? Now this? Te causeway, the colonnade, the curved outer walls, the circular canals, the central chambers, the numerous master- pieces of wall art and statues, and the inner sanctum—all bear wounds of the violence inficted upon them just hours ago.

THE UNIVERSE A swift voyage through the cosmos. The journey reaches its destination… EARTH. THE EARTH’S SURFACE We see volcanoes erupting, giant hailstorms RAINING down from the skies and tsunamis CRASHING upon the shore. CLOSER INLAND, a mountain range, where thousands of beings are locked in a FEROCIOUS battle. On one side DEMONIC CREATURES, force their way up an imposing mountain. FEMALE VOICE (VO) In the beginning, a war was waged for control of the physical realm, between the princes of heaven – the Seraphim – and the servants of Hell – the Malevores. Atop the mountain, leading into the sky, an empyreal SWIRLING LIGHT… A GATEWAY TO THE HEAVENS. Defending the mountaintop are FOUR ANGELIC TITANS (Seraphim), armed with gold swords, and covered in silver body armor. THOUSANDS of Malevore bodies are scattered everywhere. Likewise, DOZENS of dead Seraphim freckle the mountaintop. The SERAPHIM are winning through sheer, superhuman strength. Finally… four Malevore remain… their features covered by bronze facemasks. FEMALE VOICE (VO) By the end, the Malevores were all but destroyed. Each carries a weapon - Sword & Dagger, Lance, Mace and Battle Axe - marked with a small emblem depicting two entwined serpents. The Malevores DROP their weapons and SINK, with a GRISLY WAIL, into the ground. 3 FEMALE VOICE (VO) Those that survived were imprisoned in a subterranean dimension. Their tools of destruction remained their only connection to the world of the living.

Most histories written on Kemetic women not only disconnect them from Africa but also fail to fully address the significance of their position within the political spiritual structure of the state. Additionally, the presence of matriarchy in Ancient Egypt is dismissed on the basis that patriarchy is the most visible and seemingly the most dominant form of governance. Diop contended that matriarchy was one of the key factors that connected Ancient Egypt with other parts of Africa which is best understood as the Africa’s cultural continuity theory. My research analyzes the validity of his theory by comparing how Kemetic women exercised agency in their political structure to how Igbo women exercised political agency. I identified Igbo women as a cultural group to be compared to Kemet because of their historical political resistance in their state during the colonial period. However, it is their traditional roles prior to British invasion that is most relevant to my study. I define matriarchy as the central role of the mother in the social and political function of societal structures, the political positions occupied by women that inform the decisions of the state and the inclusion of female principles within the religious-political order of the nation.

Królowe egipskie, takie jak Hatszepsut, nie ugruntowałyby swojej wysokiej pozycji na dworze faraona, gdyby nie tytuł Boskiej Małżonki Amona, przysługujący już ich matkom i babkom. Zdecydowane postawy niektórych przedstawicielek XVII i XVIII dynastii miały wpływ na stosunki w rodzinie panującej, wychowanie przyszłych władców i, co tutaj szczególnie istotne, zmieniały postrzeganie roli kobiety w otoczeniu faraona. Już sama postać królowej Tetiszeri jest przykładem na to, jak małżonka faraona mogła stać się „kobiecą głową rodziny” dzięki świado- memu kształtowaniu losów swoich dzieci i wnucząt. Inną postacią, niewątpliwie co najmniej tak wpływową jak Tetiszeri, była Ahmose-Nefertari, żona Ahmose I Wyzwoliciela, matka Amenhote- pa I, opiekunka Teb Zachodnich, protektorka Totmesa I, a być może i cicha opiekunka królowej Ahmes i jej córki Hatszepsut. Z kolei Ahmose-Meritamun, małżonka Amenhotepa I, nie pozosta- wiając potomka, chcąc nie chcąc, wpłynęła na losy całej dynastii. Znamy jeszcze księżniczki, których zachowane do naszych czasów mumie mówią wiele o ich życiu, pokrewieństwie, statusie na dworze. Panteon kobiet początku XVIII dynastii zamykają matka Totmesa I oraz jego żona królowa Ahmes, które przyczyniły się do wzrostu znaczenia kobiet wśród elity tebańskiego pałacu faraona. Słowa kluczowe: Nowe Państwo, XVII dynastia, XVIII dynastia, Ahmose-Nefertari, Ahmose- -Inhapi, Ahmes, Tetiszeri, Hatszepsut Pozycja królowych i księżniczek na dworze tebańskim w czasie poprzedzają- cym okres Nowego Państwa była zróżnicowana.
