David Baldacci’s Hour Game: Translation and Analysis

The bachelor thesis concerns with the English-Czech translation and the mistranslations which can occur. The work consists of two main parts. The practical part contains four chosen chapters of the novel Hour Game by David Baldacci and the Czech translation. The next part of this thesis deals with comparing of this translation and the translation of Ivan Brož, which has been branded as the worst translation of the year 2006 by Obec překladatelů. The goal is to find out whether the criticism of the translation of this particular book is in place and to evaluate the translation of Ivan Brož from the readers’ point of view.

Anotace

David Baldacci: Hour Game – překlad a analýza

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá anglicko-českým překladem a nepřesnostmi, které se v překladu mohou vyskytnout. Práce sestává ze dvou částí. Praktická část obsahuje čtyři vybrané kapitoly z novely Hour Game od Davida Baldacciho a jejich český překlad. Druhá část práce srovnává český překlad z předchozí kapitoly s překladem pana Ivana Brože, který byl ohodnocen Obcí překladatelů jako nejhorší překlad roku 2006. Cílem práce je zjistit zda je kritika překladu této knihy na místě a ohodnotit překlad pana Ivana Brože z pozice čtenáře.

1. Introduction

The Czech translation of the book Hour Game, originally written by David Baldacci, has been branded by Obec překladatelů as the worst translation of the year 2006. It has been translated by Ivan Brož, edited by Miroslav Žák and published by Mladá fronta. I chose this book for two reasons. The first one was the topic and the great reviews the original book gained. Although there are many detective stories and thrillers nowadays, it is not easy to find a good one to read. I have to say I was not disappointed. The second reason was that the translation of Ivan Brož has been branded as the worst of the year 2006. I mean no irreverence towards Ivan Brož, who is well respected publicist and author of political and historical non-fiction literature. Translating a book of 700 pages in limited time is everything but an easy task. I chose this book to decide for myself about the quality of the published translation. In the practical part I focused on the reading and translation of four chapters from the book. These chapters were chosen randomly. They are from the first quarter of the book where the actual story begins, but the reader does not lack any information from the previous text. The book itself is a thriller and readers can expect easy comprehensible structures and no specialized vocabulary. The author does not use complicated complex, compound or multiple sentences. That would dispel all the tension and the readers would be bored. The majority of the story is told by dialogues. This is the reason why I find it easy to understand the plot without any difficulties for any upper-intermediate reader. The book is the second part of the five volume series about detectives Maxwell and King and that is why it is important to get a bit familiar with the preceding book – Split Second. The stories are not really connected, but the translator must be aware of the relationships concerning the main characters and adapt the Czech text according to that.

2. About the author and the book

This section gives a brief insight into the life and work of David Baldacci and into the features of the book which are important for the process of translation.

2.1 David Baldacci

David Baldacci is a 52 years old American novelist, author of many best sellers, screenwriter and a former lawyer. He wrote over twenty novels and 15 of them became a number one best seller. His works are very popular all around the world and have been translated into 45 languages. We can buy his books in over 100 countries. His first novel Absolute Power was made into a film in 1997, which was just one year after it had been published. Many magazines and newspapers brought some of his works to millions of people. He contributes to the Parade Magazine. Many TV shows invited him as a guest, thus not just his work but also his face became world-wide known. (n.d., 2011)

2.2 The book Hour Game

Hour Game describes an adventure of two detectives – Michelle Maxwell and Sean King – who were already introduced to the readers in Baldacci's previous book Split Second. On 700 pages Baldacci gives us a thrilling story situated into a small town called Wrightsburg. A copycat killer is terrorizing this small town and no one is safe. Retelling the plot would be complicated and for the purposes of this thesis irrelevant. That's why I will focus first of all on the characters and their relationships. The environment is not extraordinary in any way. The story takes place in the 21st century in a small town in Virginia. But the characters and their social status signify the differences in the way they speak and interact with each other. These differences are obvious in the original text, thus it should be reflected in the translation as well. Although there are many characters I will focus on 5 of them.

Sean King – a former agent in his forties, used to be a lawyer and now runs a detective agency with his colleague Michelle Maxwell. 1 He is decent, polite but strict at the same tame. He is respected and revered. He is very reliable and people turn to him for help. His behaviour

1 We can understand him as the adventurous part of the author‘s personality as Baldacci used to be a lawyer as well and at the time the book was published the author and the character were of the same age. 2 is friendly and his company is pleasant. Although he did not really like his partner from the first time, they have developed nice relationship and King knows he can count on Maxwell in any situation. Michelle Maxwell – also a former agent. She is about thirty years old and although she is not interested in men she always catches their complete attention. She is sporty and working very hard on her physical. Men who do not work with her are attracted, those who do feel too strong competition and do not really appreciate her presence. Women usually feel threatened by her appearance and if they do not feel jealous they at least envy.

Todd Williams – a chief of the local police office. He is in his fifties. He is proud of his position and is very competitive. No one else is allowed to play on his ground, unless he is asked to. On the other hand, he can admit he needs help. He is nervous, bit choleric but also sensitive and down to earth. His relationship with Sean King is obviously friendly. They know each other for a long time and have already worked together.

Kyle Montgomery – a young assistant of the local doctor. He just turned thirty and his dream is to become a rock star. He is self-centred, insolent and forward person. He steals and sells prescription drugs to get more money. He talks like a teenager. Lives alone and has have no friends.

Sylvia Diaz – a local doctor. She is in her late thirties, but her appearance suggests she is younger. She used to go out with Sean King. Their relationship is friendly. She feels quite the opposite emotions towards Michelle Maxwell. Sylvia is very intelligent, hard working woman with instincts of a real bloodhound. She has no time for friends, but besides her perfectionism she seems nice.

4. Theoretical part - Analyses

In this part of my thesis I am going to focus on the issues concerning translation as a process, especially those which are the most visible in the translation of the book Hour Game. There are several problems which can be demonstrated on this text. To make the theoretical part more transparent I have divided it into two smaller units. In the first one of them I will focus on the problems which are present throughout the whole text and those will be discussed in connection with the story and demonstrated on a few examples. The second part will concern with particular lines and their analyses. In those pages I will analyse the differences between the published translation of Ivan Brož and my own translation of the four chosen chapters. As I have already mentioned in the introduction I mean no disrespect towards Ivan Brož and the following text is by no means an attempt of a criticism.

4.1 Part one

In this part I will discuss the common problems with English-Czech translation which I will demonstrate on examples extracted from the book Hour Game.

4.1.1 Translation of the Title

As Jiří Levý (1998) pointed out, the translation of a book title is very difficult. There are two ways how to create a title of a book – the titles are either describing what is going on in the plot or they are merely symbolic. The title does not just need to be translated. Word-by- word translation is less used talking about title translation. The title Hour Game is really hard to transform into a Czech title. Because of the homophones hour and our, the collocation said out loud has two meanings. So the title is a kind of a play on words. I believe there is no Czech equivalent for this. The translation has been published by Mladá fronta under the Czech title Hrátky o hodinu. There are no wrongs and rights concerning this matter. I can only suggest different title such as:

The killer is really playing some kind of a game. But unlike other stories, where the detectives have limited time to find the last victim before it is too late, in this thriller there are no deadlines. The word Hour refers to the way the killer is counting his victims. Each of them has a watch with time set according to their position on the killer's list. There is no connection to time but hours are important.

4.1.2 Importance of readers' concretization

The translation must be done with consideration of the type of readers the book was written for. This kind of a thriller, or detective story if you wish, has a wide range of readers. It is not designed for a specific age group, but we can say that the book expects modern readers. Therefore the writer, and subsequently also the translator, need to use modern language. Words like ačkoli, jelikož, nuže, spatřit, spíše, tudíž, zde, and so on are not wrong concerning the semantic translation, but they do not really fit in the context of this kind of a story. Not only the age, but also the geographical and cultural background of the readers must be considered. Although these days the cultural differences are not so obvious as they used to be, and we have more than two TV programmes to watch, Czech televiewers are not familiar with all the TV shows broadcasted in America.

Here I suggest to change the proper noun Jeopardy!, which stands for an American quiz show. (Jeopardy!, 2012) I would use an expression more familiar to the Czech audience. As there are three contestants answering questions of chosen topics the quiz sounds to me like

43 the Czech Riskuj. Though it is not really the most up-to-date TV show I am sure even younger readers will be aware of it.

4.1.3 Metaphor, metaphorical meaning

In one part of the story one of the characters describes the relationships in the small town as a Peyton Place. This is clearly a metaphor. Peyton Place was originally a novel written by Grace Metalious. (Peyton Place) It has been adapted into a film and a TV series, but I believe it is not well known among the Czech televiewers. Here comes the substitution. It is again a question of readers’ concretization. The translator needs to find an alternative which is well known to the readers of a particular country. There is not an exact equivalent, but there are many series of a similar plot, which were broadcasted in the Czech Republic. The original novel tells us a story of three women living in a small community and about their lives, loves, secrets and fears. Thus the collocation Peyton Place is a symbol of the life in such a fragile environment of a little town and of the things that must be hidden under any circumstances. To me it sounds like the series Desperate Housewives or for older readers The Days of Our Lives or Young and the Restless. I chose the first one mentioned as it is more up to date.

4.1.4 First name basis

As the book Hour Game is the second part of so far five volume series it is necessary to know at least something about the preceding episode of Maxwell and King’s adventure, which is the Second Split. Each book of this Baldacci's series has its own plot and these particular stories are not connected talking about the events. They are, however, connected by some of the characters and more or less the environment. Detectives Maxwell and King solve

44 different cases, but they still work together and cooperate with the same people. Therefore it is important to find out what the relationships are like and how do the characters interact. Getting familiar with the environment and relationships help the translator to identify the vocabulary the characters use and also to solve the issue concerning the difference of the 2nd person singular and plural, which is very important in Czech. As English has no equivalent for the Czech “tykání” and “vykání” we can only assume how we should translate the dialogues. The only clue is the context and the behaviour of the characters. The first name basis is not really giving us the answer as in Czech we can address someone with his first name but still use the vocative in plural. Only after reading the whole book I changed some of the lines in the Czech translation in accordance to the closer or more distant relationship of the characters. With two exceptions I agree with Ivan Brož concerning this issue. Where I disagree is the interaction between detective Sean King and chief Todd Williams, and detective King and Harry Carrick. In my opinion they use the vocative in singular when talking to each other. These are my arguments:

Sean King and Todd Williams

Both the men are of similar age. Detective King is in his late forties and chief Williams in his fifties. They used to cooperate on other cases than this particular one, meaning they worked together. They are colleagues and respect each other. The cooperation is smoother when they address each other using the vocative in singular. I would also say that another reason it that they are men. The social barriers are lower. Men form friendship with much less obstructions than women. Or better said men do not ruminate on it so much as women do. But as I base this argument only on my personal experience I admit it to be uncorroborated, thus it could be labelled as irrelevant.

Sean King and Harry Carrick

Although they are not of the similar age, Harry Carrick is over seventy, their relationship is more one of a son and father. Harry Carrick swore Sean King into the Virginia State Bar. He somehow became his protector. So obviously they used to work together and as I stated before cooperation in general is easier using the vocative in singular. Also they use the term friend when talking about each other.

Although Michelle also used to cooperate with chief Williams, she is significantly younger and, of course, she is a woman. In English we do not have to solve the situation anyhow. They are on the first-name basis. In Czech there would be the issue which one of them has the right to offer “tykání” to the other one. Williams is older and to some extent superior, but she is a woman. Here I completely agree with Ivan Brož concerning the fact that Michelle Maxwell and Todd Williams address each other using the vocative in plural. Concerning Harry Carrick there is no doubt they would not use the vocative in singular in Czech. Harry Carrick is much older and they have just met.

4.1.5 Knowing the background

As I have pointed out in the first part of this thesis, I followed very carefully the guidelines provided by Jiří Levý and as the first thing to do, before even starting with the translation, I tried to collect as many relevant information about the environment, in which the story takes place, as possible. The first thing was to find out where exactly the town Wrightsburg is. Although we can see the picture of the Big Ben on the cover of the book published in the Czech Republic, the story clearly takes place in the USA. There really is a town of this name in the USA, but this one is fictional and is placed in Virginia, which is by the way the home land of the author. There are some other hints like the presence of the FBI or the participation of one of the characters on the re-enacting of the battles of the Civil War. From these facts it was for sure that all the expressions occurring both in British and American English, and at the same time carrying a different meaning, have to be understood in the American English version. Therefore the word college is a synonym for university and not high school. On the other hand, the translation of the collocation country lawyer is correct, but for Czech readers carries no meaning at all. In our country we do not have this kind of a lawyer, who has according to Robert H. 4.1.6 Translation of proper nouns

Peter Newmark (2001) emphasises the importance of keeping the original form of a proper noun and not using the equivalent of a particular language. For example Sylvia will still be Sylvia in Czech translation and not Silvie. There was no need to alter the translation of Ivan Brož in this matter as he always kept the original form of the name. My translation, however, differs in the forms of the first names and surnames. In Czech we have seven cases with different suffixes. It is not always easy to add the right suffix to a foreign proper noun. Here we have to consider the pronunciation of a name and do not look at the spelling. I believe one example is enough to show my point.

The proper noun Kyle in genitive

Ivan Brož translated this name in Czech genitive as Kyleho. I translated it as Kyleova simply using the Czech paradigm pán, which in genitive is pánova. The transcription will never look natural as here the translator has to combine the original noun, with its English spelling, and add a Czech suffix.

Proper nouns without addressing

Another issue concerning Proper noun in English is the tendency to use surnames alone, without any addressing or description of the person’s gender, status or for example profession. In Czech we usually use some introduction like pan, paní, slečna, if we refer to a person using his surname. Although we can see the English format in many Czech books these days, by which I mean using the surnames alone, I followed the advice of my supervisor and changed this in correspondence with the Czech tradition.

Brand names

We can find two versions of the word Zodiac in the published Czech translation - one with k at the end and another one ending with c. Here the author was talking about the make of the watch. I used the original version because it is a brand name. Brand names can not be translated. It is a trade mark, thus there is no Czech version.

4.1.7 Semi-direct speech

In the original text the thoughts of any of the characters are noted in italics. Ivan Brož did not copy this format and did not use any other way to point out that a particular line or paragraph is a thought of a character and does not belong to the narrator. I understood what was going on, because I had read the original before I started to read the Czech one, but I am sure many readers would be confused.

In Czech we have two main types of speech – direct and indirect. But there is also a semi-direct speech which applies exactly to this case. The narrator could rewrite the information this way: The man thought that she and her lovely family belong to him now. The semi direct speech does not require quotation marks and does not have to be noted differently that other text. But as a reader I would prefer some signal that what I am reading

48 does not belong to the narrator but to one of the characters. In the past the semi-direct speech was noted this way:

»Ona i její milovaná rodina teď patří mně.«

As the readers are probably not aware of this, because it is not very often used transcription, I do not suggest that omitting these marks is a mistake. But what is definitely unfortunate is omitting any kind of a signal that this specific line is a character's thought. Keeping the original format seems comprehensible to me.

4.1.8 Translating of vulgarisms and attitudinal sentence modifiers

Although I don't find it difficult to translate vulgarisms and attitudinal sentence modifiers, as the Czech language is very rich talking about this vocabulary, I tend to reduce them where possible. By leaving out these expressions the translator risks to change the personality and attitude of a particular character. In the Czech translation I omitted words like crap, damn, hell, heck and so on. I think that these days it is not really possible to shock a reader with these strong words and I see no taboo that should not be discussed. However, it is not always necessary to use these words to express one's opinion or attitude in general. That's why I changed some of the expressions chief Williams uses. Another reason is that chief Williams does not use these words in every sentence. He uses them occasionally and they are not an inseparable part of the way he talks.

On the other hand, I translated the lines of Kyle Montgomery in a little bit non- standard way to illustrate more his personality. He is educated but at the same time rude and impolite. He talks more like a teenager and I tried to reflect that fact also in Czech.

I believe that this is the area where the subjective approach of the translator is the most visible. Every translator is at first a reader and, whether he wants it or not, he develops his own opinion on each character and projects his vision into the translation.

4.1.9 Omitting of whole phrases

Ivan Brož is very precise concerning the amount of words and sentences in his translation. He is always trying to find a way to translate each and every word. Within the four chosen chapters I found only one sentence that is in my opinion not possible to translate, at least not keeping the original thought. As I was not able to come up with a Czech equivalent I have omitted this sentence completely. Peter Newmark (1995) says that there are types of texts which should not be translated at all.

Standing alone the line is clear and comprehensible, but in the given context it is not easy to find a Czech equivalent that would fit in. The preceding text describes the way the killer collects information about his possible victims on a parking lot. He is just sitting in his car and putting down any relevant data about the people passing by. As I see it this line refers to the effort he has to put in this activity. People are not careful about their personal data. So he could just sit and get all the information he could possibly need and did not even have to get out of the car. Here the word-by-word translation provided by Ivan Brož does not make any sense to a Czech reader and causes more of a confusion.

4.1.10 Translation of interjections

Although it may seem strange that a Czech cow produces the sound bů while an English cow answers with moo, we simply have to understand interjections as a part of speech with usually no grammatical influence or connection with the rest of the sentence. It is simply a transcription of a sound, and although the sounds are more or less the same, their written form is different in each language. Therefore they need to be translated.

I have to agree with Jiří Levý (1998) when he says that “a good translator must be primarily a good reader” (pg. 25). In the published Czech translation of the book it sometimes

51 seems that the translator is translating word-by-word and sentence by sentence and does not really connect these elements together. One example to illustrate. At the beginning of the story chief Williams comes to ask Maxwell and King to help him with his investigation. He is tired, clueless and exhausted. So I believe when the author described the chief's eyes as puffy he did not mean widen.

4.2.1 Keeping the English structure

Possessive pronouns occur in English much more often than in Czech. If it is not necessary we do not translate these. In Czech the relationships are usually deduced from the context, thus there is no need to specify the connections. In this Czech translation we can see that the translator kept the English structure of the text and preserved the possessives. I could list many examples, but I believe that these four will show my point in a sufficient way.

4.2.2 Communicative and Semantic translation

Peter Newmark (2001) focuses among other things on the difference between communicative and semantic translation. While semantic translation is more informative, detailed and concentrated, the communicative translation is for most readers more comprehensible, smoother and simpler in general. Ivan Brož is trying very hard to keep translate all the words of the text, thus he is paradoxical forced to create odd sentences which do not make much sense in Czech and the original message is lost for good.

Jiří Levý (1998) says:

A reflective philosopher, trying to find the exact equivalents in exactly the same relations as those in the original text, breaks up the complexity of a work of art, looses the global value of a passage which is the most important for a reader. (p. 47) (translated by JK)

I had some troubles with the translation of the expression commonwealth in the context of the USA. With the help of my supervisor I finally understood the term refers to some kind of an authority, political entity such as a state. To make it more comprehensible to the Czech readers I chose the word prokurátor. Although in Czech Republic we do not have this position, as it has been replaced by státní zástupce, I believe people are familiar with this term and know that prokurátor represents a particular state in prosecution.

The word bar can be translated as advokacie, so I guess that is where Ivan Brož got the Czech expression soud. The phrasal verb pick up can stand for vybrat, as well as for sbalit. I can only suggest that in combination with bar and women the second one is more convenient. The last line contains another phrasal verb, but no matter how many meanings this verb has, I could not find any connected with performing an autopsy. I know that

55 semantic translation is less appropriate here than the communicative, but the original message has to remain in the text.

Sometimes the translation does make sense in Czech, but carries very different meaning than the original text. This could, and I believe that in some cases it really does, confuse the readers. This is usually caused by synonyms in the target language. One English word with many Czech meanings can break a translated sentence apart. There are cases where the synonym somehow fits the rest of the sentence if the translator adds some other words to make the sentence complex and comprehensible. The original message sometimes remains more or less the same, but in some cases the result does not fit into the context at all. Below I have listed some examples of both cases.

Here the line is a reaction to the information that Remmy and her husband had separated bedrooms, but it was not because she preferred privacy. They just did not live together as a married couple any more. However, Remmy tried very hard to convince all the others there is nothing wrong with her marriage.

Here the translation provided by Ivan Brož gives the readers very different view on Harry’s personality and manners. In his version Harry seems angry or at least disturbed. I would say right the opposite. He is very calm and trying to comfort Michelle. Michelle is the one disturbed.

One example of how one word can change the meaning of such a complex sentence. The word is proto. We can not find it in the original sentence, but Ivan Brož added this conjunction into the translated sentence. The result is that Junior Deaver had the truck batteries already in his car and therefore did not really need to steal them.

4.2.3 Misunderstanding of the original

The original text may sometimes confuse the translator. One word can have many meanings. Two words can be even homonyms or at least homographs. The context is the only thing which can help us to understand the message.

4.2.4 Illustrating the atmosphere

I have listed the following sentence in the enumeration of the differently translated lines, because of the emotion it hides. From my point of view, an inch of bloody water is quite disturbing, scary and disgusting thing to see. Also in the previous line Todd Williams is saying that everything was washed away. To illustrate the amount of water he describes the flooded car. That's why I would not use the word trochu at all. It gives the reader very different picture of the scene. It seems not important, however, it is this kind of details which build up the scenery and its atmosphere. Regarding the work of Jan Firbas (1992) concerning the Functional Sentence Perspective I have also changed the word order. In Czech we tend to put the rheme, so the more important and new information, at the end of the sentence, while in English we do the exact opposite thing.

Although the translation should not be done word-by-word, it is important to keep the form of particular expressions. Here are some examples how changing of plural into singular, positive into negative, tense or cardinal number can change the original thought. I have added comments under the lines which need an explanation.

This line belongs to Michelle. It is just confusing who is she talking to. According to Ivan Brož she uses the vocative in plural, which would suggest she is talking to Harry Carrick, but she is in fact talking to her partner King. Also in the translation of Ivan Brož she is convinced that the person she is talking to has visited the striptease club they are talking about. But as I see it she is surprised he would ever go there.

4.2.6 Definite and Indefinite article

4.2.7 Mistranslation caused by the original text

Mistranslation caused by the similarity of two words is not rear. The similar graphical form of words of the original language is one of the two factors, causing misunderstanding and consequently mistranslation. Below I have listed seven examples of this, which I have found in the translated chapters. Particular words are made in bold.

4.2.8 Collocations with fixed meaning, phrasal expressions

The pressure of a deadline can force a translator to left the dictionary closed and rely on his own knowledge and intuition. This may cause some inaccuracies, which usually have no strong influence on the story, but could cause puzzlement. Sometimes the expression means nothing in Czech. For example prášek na suché zdění does not exist. It is a collocation without meaning.

4.2.9 Idioms

Idioms have their unique meaning, which can not be deduced from the words the collocation contains. Therefore, they have to be translated in correspondence with the meaning of the whole phrase. It is possible to translate idioms, more or less. There are two possibilities, either there is an idiom carrying the same message in the target language, or the translator has to use more words or phrases to describe the meaning.

4.2.10 Expressions and collocations which sound odd in Czech

There is another problem concerning semantic translation. The problem is that using this approach the translator can create collocations which are comprehensible to the Czech readers but sound strange. In other words these collocations are not used.

4.2.11 Quotation from another work

The following line is very specific concerning the vocabulary. It does not sound really up-to-date. I assumed it is an idiom and after some internet research I found out that it is based on the quotation from the play The Mourning Bride, written by William Congreve. Ivan Brož translated this line himself and he did it in, I would say, very good way. The message is still present and the Czech translation draws on the same emotions. It is just that the Czech readers may be familiar with the already existing translation of this quotation, thus the meaning would be more obvious to them.

4.2.12 Understanding the text with regard to the Czech word order

In English we can see the strong tendency to end sentences with prepositions. Although it used to be considered as something wrong, it is very natural. In Czech we can see right the opposite thing, especially with preposition referring to time. We usually put these prepositions at the beginning of a clause. Understanding a clause with the Czech word order may cause misunderstanding.

4.2.13 The choice of words

In some cases translators tend to choose more general terms and collocations. Jiří Levý (1998) is talking about stylistic deprivation.

There are three types of stylistic deprivation

a) use of general term instead of a concrete one

b) use of stylistically neutral word instead of emotional one

c) reduced use of synonyms to alter an expression

But the emotions, and consequently the words that express them, can not be omitted or reduced because of the feeling they should provoke. The only thing the reader has is the text. There is no other way to make an opinion on the characters than to read what the author has provided as the clues. Replacing these words causes the characters seem to be shallow.

5. Conclusion

Translation of fiction is very difficult, at least for someone without experience like me. The original text is thrilling and suspenseful and transforming that into a different language is very demanding. I think Ivan Brož did very impressive job translating these 700 pages. However, I have to say that the original text was much more comprehensible for me and I enjoyed reading it. I had very different feelings while reading the translation published in the Czech Republic. I am not in a position to criticise the work of Ivan Brož. I do not have the qualification, nor the experience to do so. The translation of Ivan Brož has been branded as the worst translation of 2006 by Obec překladatelů and warded the “Skřipec” prize. I am, however, not sure this criticism is in place. Translation is a very complex process, the translator needs to know the background as well as the characters. When translating fiction one is more writing a new book with very specific guidelines from the author of the original than simply translating. Jiří Levý (1998) mentioned that the translation must be „readable“ and that is a difficult task to accomplish. As I see it Ivan Brož did not have enough time for this translation and also the amount of the misprints and grammatical mistakes make me believe that there was an enormous pressure to publish this best seller in the Czech Republic as soon as possible. I can evaluate the Czech version of the book only as a reader and as a reader I did not like it. The Czech text is confusing concerning the word choice and the misprints, which are present throughout the book. However, I have enjoyed trying to translate those pages, albeit I am still not quite satisfied with the outcome. I have made many changes and I am sure that after a few weeks I would change many things again. So many books have been written about translation. So many guidelines and instructions have been passed to another generations so that we can make the same mistakes over and over. I tried really hard to follow the advice of those more experienced, but I am sure that at least once I have completely failed. Jiří Levý (1998) emphasises that translator should not get involved emotionally in the story. He should not identify the characters as his friends or people he knows and should not reflect his own opinions and experience. Here I would say that it is not completely possible to follow the advice. Every translator is a reader and his reading as well as his translation must

69 be more or less subjective. Unless the translator's vision is totally different from the writer's I dare to say it is not wrong.
