So how did we become the Gators? While the Gator doesn’t seem to be the most obvious choice of mascots for Allegheny, a school nestded in northwest Pennsylvania there is a great story behind its arrival. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine that was tided Allegheny A lligator for the following reasoning which appeared in the first issue of the publication:

^COM M ENCEM ENT 2003: On May 11, 2003, the 188th year of Allegheny College, 435 tassles ^■'w ere turned from left to right as graduates received their diplomas. The class included 391 May graduates, 36 January 2003 graduates, and eight September 2002 graduates. Due to inclement weather in the morning, the commencement ceremonies were held in the Wise Center. Honorary Doctoral Degrees were awarded to three people: Richard L. Pevar '64 and his wife Larissa Volokhonsky, who have spent the last 15 years producing award-winning translations of Russian literature's classics, and Robert D. Dowling who performed the first double lung transplant, and the first ventricular remodeling in Kentucky. Mr. Pevar and Ms. Volokhonsky r ecejved Doctor of Hm a ne^^tteg^egree^LdTD ^nc^iU D ow lm jyjeceive^^^octoi^^^^ Science Degree (Sc.D.) Ms. Willow Wilcox Brost '74, a member of the Allegheny College Board of Trustees was a welcome speaker. The class Valedictorian was Britt Marie Russert who, along with five other students graduated summa cum laude. The requirements for which are a cumulative average of 3.9 or above and a meritorious record; 55 students graduated magna cum laude with a cumulative average of 3.6-3.89, and 91 students graduated cum laude with a cumulative average of 3.3 to 3.59.
