Introduction 1 Colour in Nature: Walk, See, Find and Create

No experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome to these FREE events, however they are more suitable for adults and accompanied children over age 10.

Come and visit two of our beautiful nature reserves seen through the eyes and knowledge of our Lewes District Council ranger and local artist, Jacky Misson www.jackymisson.com.

During the morning the emphasis will be on looking at colours and shapes in nature, will include individual note taking and sketching plus a group collecting and collage or sculpture piece.

Some materials will be provided, but do bring your own sketchbooks, pencils and paints.

Our Art and Film strand is opened by Alexandra Loske, who will provide a brief illustrated talk on the history of colour: how humans have been creating pigments and paints since pre-historic times, the impact of Isaac Newton unravelling the rainbow, Take this rare opportunity to and how new ideas about our emotional responses see Krzysztof Kieslowski’s 1990s to colour emerged in the Romantic Age. Alexandra arthouse classic Three Colours will also talk about our special relationship with the colour blue to precede the screening of Krzysztof Trilogy on the big screen in Kieślowski’s film Three Colours: Blue. Lewes, Newhaven and over three Alexandra will present a shorter introduction about consecutive Saturdays during the colour white before Three Colours: White (1994) Artwave Festival. See just one, at the Hillcrest Centre in Newhaven on 25 August. or better still come to all three.

Dr Alexandra Loske is an art historian, curator at the Royal Pavilion, editor of the book Languages of Colour (2012) and author of a major forthcoming book on colour, to be published in Spring 2019. She has lectured extensively on colour history and colour theory and has appeared on national and international TV and Radio.

Join artist Ruby Smith to create badges inspired by our current exhibition, Corita Kent: Get With D R The Action. Ruby’s practice explores current social commentary with the aim of using craft as a tool to C open up discussions around politics and the environment. Corita Kent (1918 - 1986) was an artist, charismatic educator and Roman Catholic nun based in Los E Angeles during the 1960s. Her vibrant screen printed banners and posters drew on pop and modern consumer cultures. Her bright, bold work captured the public imagination in order to influence social change by confronting issues of poverty, racism and war. Her work also resonates with the museum’s permanent collection. Ditchling village has lured many creatives over the years, including the group of renowned artists and craftspeople at the turn of the 20th Century, whose work and lives are celebrated in the museum. This year’s Artwave exhibition features hand cut rough diamonds, emerald, tanzanite, T P lapis lazuli and labradorite. During the festival, take a tour of their workshops to discover ‘A Precious E Legacy’, their unique jewellery remodelling service, in which designer Rebecca Smith takes inspiration and materials from client’s jewellery collection to create new designs. Reusing gold and gemstones ensures that jewellery is enjoyed and worn whilst maintaining a sentimental connection to the original pieces. The jewellery pictured was made in their workshop using recommissioned antique diamonds. These ‘old cut’ stones are rare unique pieces created by hand, which Pruden and Smith have remounted in 18ct yellow gold, emphasizing their unique uneven shapes. 01273 846338.

Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft and Brighton Festival present Belonging, a co-commissioned touring D R installation created by contemporary artist Morag Myerscough stopping at Newhaven Fort during Artwave. The Belonging Bandstand project is born out of the kinship Myerscough feels with the work T P of 1960s Los Angelino artist Corita Kent, and accompanies Ditchling museum’s exhibition, Corita Kent: E Get With The Action. The bandstand will be resident at Newhaven Fort from 22 August (admission applies), however, the Fort opens for free on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August to host the Festival of Belonging - the community’s own organised event (www.festivalofbelonging.co.uk) see page 45 for full details. You will see placards created and painted by local Newhaven residents, inspired by a workshop with Morag on the theme of ‘belonging’, fixed on the crown of the bandstand.
