APOCALYPTIC THEOPOLITICS: DISPENSATIONALISM, ISRAEL/PALESTINE, AND ECCLESIAL ENACTMENTS OF ESCHATOLOGY By Elizabeth Phillips ABSTRACT This thesis is a critical analysis of the theology and ethics of dispensationalist Christian Zionism in America. Chapter One introduces the thesis and its method, which draws constructively from history, sociology, and anthropology while remaining substantively theological. Chapter Two describes dispensationalism’s origins in nineteenth-century Britain and its dissemination and development in America. Chapter Three moves from broad, historical description to the contemporary and particular through an introduction to Faith Bible Chapel (FBC), an American Christian Zionist congregation. This description arises from an academic term spent at FBC observing congregational life and conducting extensive interviews, as well as fieldwork undertaken in FBC’s “adopted settlement” in the West Bank, including interviews with Israeli settlers about partnerships with American Christians. The remaining chapters move to more explicitly doctrinal analysis. Chapters Four through Six are shaped by William Cavanaugh’s concept of ‘theopolitics’ (Theopolitical Imagination , 2002): a disciplined, community-gathering common imagination of time and space. Through the exploration of a key historical text ( The Scofield Reference Bible , 1917) and its continuing legacies in the life and thought of FBC, these chapters examine the theopolitics of dispensationalist Christian Zionism, demonstrating that it is a complex system of convictions and practices in which the disciplines of biblicism and biblical literalism form an eschatology which subordinates ecclesiology and Christology, nurturing an imagination of the roles of Christ and the church in time and space which sever social ethics from necessary Christological and ecclesiological sources. John Howard Yoder’s work is used to bring this system into relief, and to establish that eschatology per se is not inimical to Christian social ethics. Chapter Seven concludes the thesis with a summary of its findings, as well as a discussion of the positive functions of apocalyptic in Christian social ethics, pointing toward the possibility of alternative ecclesial enactments of apocalyptic theopolitics. 1 CHAPTER OE: Introduction 1 It is time for Sunday School, and children and adults alike are making their way to their weekly lessons. Members of the Prophecy Workshop are filing into their usual classroom. They help themselves to doughnuts, and coffee in Styrofoam cups as they warmly greet and chat with one another and take their seats. The class of about thirty members is pleased to hear that they will be viewing another installment of a video by televangelist Perry Stone, who identifies himself as “one of America’s foremost experts on Bible Prophecy.” 2 One of the class’s two female facilitators inserts the Perry Stone DVD into the player, 3 the chatting is hushed, and the revelations begin. Stone is on location in Israel, standing outdoors in a sporty track suit, interpreting the book of Ezekiel. He reads several verses of chapter 35, which is a prophecy against Mount Seir, and he explains this is a reference to modern-day Palestinians. Verse five says, “Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity . .” 4 Stone goes on to read verse ten, “Because thou hast said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it.” He explains

The present issue is devoted to the society's annual lecture which was delivered during the study weekend held at Kirkley Hall, Ponteland, in September 1984. Dr. Sheridan Gilley, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology at the University of Durham, has placed the society firmly in his debt both by his readiness to lecture at unavoidably short notice and by the theme of his paper. At first sight "Newman and Prophecy", whether Evangelical or Catho­ lic, is unlikely to be of immediate relevance to our concerns. The past year, however, has seen the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Edward Irving's death, and Dr. Gilley's paper, by reminding us that prophecy was a major concern of mainstream Protestantism until well into the nineteenth century, provides a context for our understanding of what otherwise is an embarrass- . ingly eccentric (and therefore ignored) aspect of our past.     Israel Creates First ‘Army-owned’ University West Bank campus plans to double in size By Jonathan Cook In-depth Report: PALESTINE Global Research, January 25, 2010 25 January 2010 Ehud Barak, Israel’s defence minister, approved last week the upgrading to university status of a college in a settlement located deep inside the West Bank, a move certain to further undermine Palestinian confidence in the peace process. The decision, authorising the first Israeli university in Palestinian territory, is expected to entitle the college to significant extra funding, allowing it to expand its student population. About 11,000 students, most from inside Israel, already attend the college in Ariel, studying amid a population of 18,000 settlers. The expansion of Ariel, 20km inside the West Bank and close to Nablus, is likely to increase tensions with the US administration of Barack Obama. The White House has demanded a settlement freeze that is being only temporarily and partially honoured by Israel. The United States and Israel have repeatedly clashed over Israeli plans to extend its separation wall east of Ariel, effectively annexing the settlement and separating the central and northern parts of the West Bank. Peace groups have been particularly shocked that authorisation for Ariel college’s upgrade came from Mr Barak, leader of the Labor Party. Members of his centre-left faction had previously blocked attempts by right-wing parties to change the college’s status. Several Israeli academics also warned that it would add fuel to existing campaigns in Europe to boycott Israeli universities, which have been accused of complicity with the occupation.

This chapter digs much deeper, unpacking the ways in which Hebrew can be an asset in all our Jewish doings, so much of which are wrapped up in our ongoing dialogue with words and texts.     The Journal of Ministry & Theology 26 The Glory of God and Dispensationalism: Revisiting the Sine Qua Non of Dispensationalism Douglas Brown n 1965 Charles Ryrie published Dispensationalism Today. In this influential volume, Ryrie attempted to explain, I systematize, and defend the dispensational approach to the Scriptures. His most notable contribution was arguably the three sine qua non of dispensationalism. First, a dispensationalist consistently keeps Israel and the church distinct. Second, a dispensationalist consistently employs a literal system of hermeneutics (i.e., what Ryrie calls “normal” or “plain” interpretation). Third, a dispensationalist believes that the underlying purpose of the world is the glory of God.2 The acceptance of Ryrie’s sine qua non of dispensationalism has varied within dispensational circles. In general, traditional dispensationalists have accepted the sine qua non and used them as a starting point to explain the essence of dispensationalism.3 In contrast, progressive dispensationalists have largely rejected Ryrie’s proposal and have explored new ways to explain the essential tenants of Douglas Brown, Ph.D., is Academic Dean and Senior Professor of New Testament at Faith Baptist Theological Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa. In historiography, the phrase Constantinian shift in the sense of transforma- tion connected with the reign of Constantine is quite common. This expression occurs in different languages e.g.: przełom konstantyński1, die konstantinische Wende2, le tournant constantinien3, svolta Constantiniana4. Sometimes, the whole epoch initiated by Constantine is referred to as groundbreaking5 or it is replaced with a semantically closed phrase – the revolution of Constan- tine6. According to the dictionary definition a “shift” is a change in something; this is a change in position, direction, or character. So, a fundamental change, a real turnabout is meant here.     106 SEMINARY STUDIES Since Baird is certain to replace Kummel as the standard text, it would be worthwhile to briefly compare the two. Kummel gives much more information on the pre-Enlightenment period (two chapters covering 27 pages rather than the 5-page section in the introduction allowed by Baird). Kiimrnel treats a considerably larger number of individual scholars but more briefly. Baird gives detailed discussions of only 64 individuals. Some of these figures Baird mentions in passing (e.g., G. C. Storr, G. T. Zacharia, and Albrecht Ritschl) and others he will treat in the second volume (e.g., H. J. Holtzmann and B. F. Westcott), but it is clear that his selection is rather limited. But this is not necessarily a weakness; discussing representative figures helps one see the forest, and an attempt to be more comprehensive and encyclopedic could lead one to lose sight of the forest for the trees. Kummel is also helpful in that he very frequently cites extensive materials from the author's works themselves. Baird, on the other hand provides more historical context and treats each author hi one place (the single exception is J. S. Semler) rather than in several places as Kummel sometimes does. Baird includes some conservative figures often overlooked (e.g., Neander and Hengstenberg), but his emphasis is clearly on figures important in the rise and development of the historical-criticalmethod. This represents, in my estimate, something of a weakness on Baird's part. Maybe it is inherent in the genre, but there is a decided historicist and positivist bias.

Paul’s leaving Timothy behind at Ephesus was to counter the ‘Hebrew Roots’ heresy that was continually undermining his efforts to spread the Gospel among the nations. 1 Timothy 1:1-11 1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia – remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm. 8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

Analysing a major cultural phenomenon in recent times De Villers, Pieter GR University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article represents a research overview of the nature, historical roots, social contexts and growth of millennialism as a remarkable religious and cultural phenomenon in modern times. It firstly investigates the notions of eschatology, millennialism and rapture that characterize millennialism. It then analyses how and why millennialism that seems to have been a marginal phenomenon, became prominent in the United States through the evangelistic activities of Darby, initially an unknown pastor of a minuscule faith community from England and later a household name in the global religious discourse. It analyses how millennialism grew to play a key role in the religious, social and political discourse of the twentieth century. It finally analyses how Darby’s ideas are illuminated when they are placed within the context of modern England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a conclusion some key challenges of the place and role of millennialism as a movement that reasserts itself continuously, are spelled out in the light of this history. As theological conflict heated up in the early 20th century, dispensationalism’s unique eschatology became one of the characteristic features of the various strands of “fundamentalists” who fought against modernism and the perceived compromises of mainline Protestantism. Their embrace of the dispensationalist view of history and Biblical prophecy had a significant effect on how they interpreted world events and how they lived out their faith. These fundamentalists established patterns of interpretation that in the second half of the 20th century would fuel the emergence of a politically influential form of Christian Zionism.
