WESTERN COLLEGIATE Opening Faceoff HOCKEY ASSOCIATION • Prominent in the Polls: The Women's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is leading the country • Founded 1999 • with four teams ranked in the early-season USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, matching ECAC Hockey in the 2950 Metro Drive, Suite 102 latter rankings. University of Minnesota • O-H-I-O: Ohio State has staked an early claim among the NCAA's elite, returning to the national top-10 for the first time since University of Minnesota Duluth Jan. 12, 2015. The 3-0-1 Buckeyes are No. 7 in both polls, the program's highest ranking since the 2012-13 team held the No. 6 Minnesota State University, Mankato spot on Oct. 15, 2012. Ohio State University • OSU, which is tied for the NCAA's top-scoring offense at 4.00 goals per game, has not been undefeated after four St. Cloud State University games since that 2012-13 team opened 5-0-0. The Buckeyes opened the season with a home sweep over RPI, then University of Wisconsin vaulted into the rankings after a five-point WCHA weekend at then-No. 4/5 Minnesota -- a weekend that was a decade in the making. 16 National Championships • The Buckeyes' 3-2 victory in Friday's series opener snapped a pair of 10-year droughts. • After a 6-0-0 start in non-conference action, the No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team opens WCHA play this weekend with a trip to Mankato, Minnesota, to take on Minnesota State. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday’s game begins at 3 p.m. • Wisconsin swept Syracuse on the road last weekend, earning a 1-0 win on Friday before crushing the Orange, 5-2, on Saturday. Five different Badgers scored in the sweep, including Claudia Kepler, who tallied a pair of power-play goals on Saturday. • Sophomore netminder Kristen Campbell was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after becoming the only league goalie to earn a pair of wins last week. Campbell earned her NCAA-leading third shutout of the year, stopping all 20 of the shots she faced in UW’s 1-0 win on Friday. Campbell then saved 16 of the 18 shots in UW’s 5-2 win on Saturday. Campbell saved 36 of the 38 shots she faced during the week for a 1.00 GAA and a .947 save percentage. On the year, Campbell has a 0.67 GAA, a .963 save percentage and a 6-0-0 record. • Sophomore Abby Roque currently leads the NCAA in point scoring with 10 points. Roque picked up three assists and one goal over the weekend to add to her tally. The sophomore is currently averaging 1.67 points per game. • Wisconsin leads the all-time series against Minnesota State 78-2-3. UW swept MSU, 7-0 and 6-0, in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs last year. UW has a 17-game winning streak against the Mavericks dating back to March 2, 2014. • Both the Badgers and the Mavericks feature head coaches from the storybook 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that captured gold in Lake Placid, N.Y.
