• Works on themes such as foreign policy (Flanders, Belgium, European Union), Geopolitics (both theoretical and case-oriented), energy and international politics, multilateral policy and negotiations and theory and history of International Relations; • Path-breaking theoretical research on the History of Geopolitics and the analysis of foreign policy (1890-2005), which is also appreciated internationally / interest in Geopolitics & Europe; • The last years also a focus on (renewable and sustainable) energy ( ‘Geopolitics of Renewable Energy’ ). This research has generated attention, both in Belgium & internationally; • Internationally widely established research and network on sub-state diplomacy and foreign affairs in a comparative perspective / also an interest in new trends in diplomacy; • Substantial research experience on Flemish regional foreign policy and diplomacy since 1997 (projects on the Nordic countries – 1998-1999, multilateral organisations – 2000-2001, Central-Europe – 2003, Geopolitics of energy and Russia – 2008, Comparative foreign policy and diplomacy of regions and small states – 2008, Geopolitics of the Mediterranean – 2009, Geopolitics of renewable energy – 2011). Nationally and internationally recognized as authoritative author on Flemish foreign policy and regional sub-state diplomacy. • Since 2008, also work on Belgian federal foreign policy and the foreign and security policy of the European Union, with special attention to the geopolitical dimension. • Promotor of PhD theses: Dr. Manuel Duran, “Sub-state diplomacy as a motor of reterritorialization? Experience in bringing in a diverse range of scientific research assignments, both fundamental and policy-relevant. (Co-)author of successful research proposals that were funded: 1 fundamental research project of the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research (250.100,- euro), 1 Research Institute on Flemish Foreign Policy, 2007-2011 (2.285.000,- euro of which 40% was for my Faculty Social Sciences of the University of Antwerp), 3 policy-relevant projects (total: 262.160,- euro), 1 international network (4.000,- euro) and 2 subsidies for publications (10.000,- euro). Since becoming an assistant professor, I have submitted annually at least one and often two projects at different fundamental scientific research funds.
