The concept of and research on expanded user experience of mobile devices Faculty of Science, Department of Information Processing Science, University of Oulu, P.O.Box 3000, FI-90014 University of Oulu, Finland Acta Univ. Oul. A 559, 2010 Oulu, Finland Abstract In order to respond to the challenges posed by technological development, new interdisciplinary concepts and methods in the fields of research and design of information and communication technology are required. The researchers in this fields have been trying to solve design problems by, for example, concentrating on designing for the user experience (UX). Nevertheless, the concept of UX has been widely disseminated and rapidly adapted in many areas of design without it being clearly defined or deeply understood. Not only theoretical study of the phenomenon is needed but also analytical tools to more comprehensively analyse and understand UX. Such an important tool would be a concept that can be used to study practical phenomena in a comprehensive manner. The theoretical objective of this thesis was to formulate a new, “expanded” concept of UX that can be used to describe human experience with technology so that both short-term and longer-term aspects of this experience can be taken into account. Based on the review of the literature, it seemed that Dewey’s concept of aesthetic experience could provide a theoretical frame of reference for an approach aiming at understanding UX in a more comprehensive manner. A broad theoretical concept, such as Dewey’s concept of aesthetic experience, is not directly applicable to empirical research, however. The practical objective of the thesis was to outline a method or a set of methods how the concept can be operationalised. A comprehensive and operational concept of UX is generated based on Dewey’s concept of aesthetic experience that is divided into two levels utilising Leontjev’s activity theory. As a result of the research, the concept of expanded user experience (eUX) and the reflective research method for studying it has been created. This research has shown that by studying longer- term UX in addition to temporal UX and by focusing on analysing the user’s activity it is possible to see a larger and more meaningful view on UX. The reflective research method is particularly beneficial as a long-term research method focusing on the everyday environments of users. Keywords: experience with technology, motivated activity, technology as experience, user experience Luojus, Satu, Hetkellisyyydestä kokemukseen – mobiililaitteen laajennetun käyttäjäkokemuksen käsitteestä ja tutkimisesta Luonnontieteellinen tiedekunta, Tietojenkäsittelytieteiden laitos, Oulun yliopisto, PL 3000, 90014 Oulun yliopisto Acta Univ. Oul. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteel- la vaikutti siltä, että Dewey’n esteettisen kokemuksen käsite voisi ratkaista useita aikaisemman käyttäjäkokemuksen tutkimuksessa ilmenneitä puutteellisuuksia tarjoamalla teoreettisen viiteke- hyksen lähestymistavalle, jonka tavoitteena on ymmärtää käyttäjäkokemusta aikaisempaa koko- naisvaltaisemmin. Laaja teoreettinen käsite, kuten Dewey’n esteettisen kokemuksen käsite, ei kuitenkaan ole suoraan sovellettavissa empiiriseen tutkimukseen. Näin ollen tutkimuksen käy- tännöllinen tavoite oli hahmotella menetelmä tai joukko menetelmiä, joiden avulla Dewey’n esteettisen kokemuksen käsite voidaan operationalisoida. Tutkimuksessa kehitetty, aikaisempaa kokonaisvaltaisempi ja operationaalinen käyttäjäkokemuksen käsite perustuu Dewey’n esteetti- sen kokemuksen käsitteeseen, joka on operationalisoitu jakamalla se kahteen tasoon Leontjev’n toiminnan teorian avulla. Tutkimuksen tuloksena syntyi laajennettu käyttäjäkokemuksen käsite (the expanded user experience), ja sen tutkimiseen tarkoitettu reflektiivinen käyttäjätutkimusmenetelmä (the reflec- tive research method). Tässä tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että keskittymällä pidempikestoisen käyt- täjäkokemuksen tutkimiseen hetkellisesti muodostuvan käyttäjäkokemuksen rinnalla sekä analy- soimalla käyttäjän toimintaa, voidaan käyttäjäkokemus nähdä aikaisempaa laajempana ja merki- tyksellisempänä ilmiönä. Reflektiivinen tutkimusmenetelmä soveltuu erityisesti käyttäjien joka- päiväisessä arjessa tapahtuvaan pitempiaikaiseen käyttäjätutkimukseen. Asiasanat: käyttäjäkokemus, teknologia kokemuksena Acknowledgements This dissertation is the result of my long and winding journey along the road of research. I took an exciting and compelling path. At times, it turned out to be fairly rough and almost impassable. As the destination finally begins to loom in the distance, I am starting to perceive the meaning of my journey. Along the way, I have received support from a number of people and, in addi- tion to those stated here, I would like to thank all with whom I have had exciting discussions over themes touched upon by my research topic. First, I would like to thank Professor Kari Kuutti, my supervisor for encour- aging guidance and motivating support. He has provided me with valuable com- ments and development proposals that advanced my work significantly. His ex- amples and instructions have left an indelible impression on my ways of thinking. I also wish to thank Professor Susanne Bødker and Professor Birgitta Bergvall- Kåreborn, the pre-examiners of my work, for their constructive criticism and development proposals that will also help me direct my research work in the fu- ture. I wish to thank the Foundation for Economic Education that supported my dissertation financially and the Laurea University of Applied Sciences for my study leave. I especially wish to thank Principal Lecturer Olli Vilkki, who is also my working life counsellor, for his encouraging support and empathy throughout my journey – especially at the deepest moments of despair. I also wish to thank Director Seija Paasovaara for her exemplary commitment to collecting research material. SCIRA European National Secretaries Meeting August 12, 2012 Club Nautico Cervia Cervia, Italy European National Secretary Zbigniew Rakocy called the meeting to order at 10:14am and welcomed everyone and explained a quorum was reached with 8 countries represented. The meeting was attended by European General Secretary Zbigniew Racoky (POL), SCIRA Secretary Pietro Fantoni (ITA), National Secretary Andrea Piazza (ITA), and representatives from NOR - Ulrik Sandvik; BEL - Bart Janssens; FIN- Jukka Kotisala; POR - Miguel Graca; ESP - Cesar Travado and Executive Director Jerelyn Biehl. Minutes from 2010 were discussed as distributed from the Oslo meeting. The minutes were approved with a minor change. Country Reports Norway: Snipe activity in Norway past two years Unfortunately the activity in the Norwegian fleets has declined over the past two years. It's hard to say for sure what the reason is. It seems to be a similar situation for several other classes as well. The only class clearly increasing is the F18 catamaran class. It seems like people have less and less time to use on sailing, work and family consumes a lot of time. At the moment there are only 2-3 fleets in Norway with good activity: Snarøya (Oslo), Stavanger (west coast), and Bergen(west coast) is being rebuilt after several years with decreasing activity. In Bergen snipes have been spread out on two different locations, now they have agreed to gather in one place which will hopefully boost activity. The number of boats in weekend regattas has been steadily decreasing, but regattas on workday evenings are still strong with good participation.

COMPETITIVE BALANCE IN VEIKKAUSLIIGA AND LIIGA Roope Töllikkö Master’s Thesis Sport and Exercise Promotion Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences University of Jyväskylä 2020 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences TÖLLIKKÖ, ROOPE: Competitive balance in Veikkausliiga and Liiga ABSTRACT Master’s Thesis, 77 pages Social Sciences of Sport 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since the nominal paper by Simon Rottenberg in 1956, in which he discussed the notion of competitive balance for the first time, the theory has been a backbone in team sport economics. However, recent empirical evidence shows a clear trend of decrease in the levels of competitive balance across different leagues and sports around the world. A clear gap in the evidence exists in the Finnish sporting context and therefore this thesis aims to determine the current levels of competitive balance in Veikkausliiga and Liiga and how these levels have evolved throughout the last 30 years (1990-2019). The theoretical framework of this thesis can be traced to Simon Rottenberg’s theory of competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome, which is widely considered as the kick-start for team sport economics. The theory states that in order for a sport league to thrive, to attract spectators and thus be more profitable, the teams must be of approximately similar strength. Dominance, or in other words, a monopoly position of one or a few teams would harm the league, the main product itself. In order to measure the levels of competitive balance in the two leagues, a series of widely established measurement methods were used. The tools included the Herfindahl-Index, Gini Coefficient, standard deviation and historical winning percentages.
