What type of qualification can I get? You will work towards SVQ Level 1, Employability awards along with selected units from Amenity Horticulture SVQ Level 1 and 2. You will have the opportunity to receive training the CSCS qualification.

What can I do next? ? If you successfully complete the Stage 2 programme you can progress on to the Stage 3 programme, which can develop further your employability skills and offer you more work experience

How long does the programme last? Up to 10 weeks.

What hours will I work? Monday and Wednesday 9.15am to 12.30pm, Tuesday and Thursday 11.00am to 3.00pm.

What will I be doing on the programme?  This programme is is a mixture of group work (up to 15 young people) and individual support, aiming to improve your personal skills such as confidence, motivation, communication and self-esteem.  Training involves a wide range of activities including team building, issue-based work (such as healthy living and relationships), cooking and job skills (e.g. making a CV, practising application forms, interview techniques and job searching).  You will also have the opportunity to get some work experience with a wide range of employers and in different career areas, as well as the chance to participate in employer visits, short tasters and work shadowing.

What type of qualification can I get? You will be given the opportunity to complete some qualifications (SQA Access 3 Communication, Numeracy and IT, SQA Employability, Sports Leader UK, Youth Achievement Award), if required. In addition, literacy support is available.

What can I do next? If you successfully complete the CY Get 2 It (Stage 2) programme you can progress on to the CY 3 Steps Up programme or any other Stage 3 programme, which can develop further your employability skills and offer you more work experience.

What will I be doing on the programme?  The CY 3 Steps Up programme is delivered through varied and dynamic training which focuses on work related activities.  You will attend a work experience placement at least 3 and a half days per week. Placements are available with a variety of employers and career sectors.  During the programme you will receive support from the CY staff to develop your employability skills such as interview techniques, job searching and application procedures

What type of qualification can I get? You will complete the Certificate of Work Readiness, which has units including dealing with work situations, customer care and practical workplace skills.

What can I do next? If you successfully complete the CY 3 Steps Up programme you can progress on to the CY Work 4 programme or any other Stage 4 programme, college, a Modern Apprenticeship or employment.

What hours will I work? Monday 10am - 4pm. This will be spent at Direct Partners premises. Tuesday - Friday will be with your employer placement. Hours will vary depending on the employer but will involve between 16-24 hours per week.

What will I be doing on the programme?  While at Direct partners on a Monday you will focus on employability skills.  The employability programme is a blended mix of classroom support, working on Customer Service Skills  The duties you carry out while on work placement will vary depending on the type of job you are doing

What type of qualification can I get? The qualification you work towards will depend on the type of work placement you undertake.

What can I do next? All employers providing the 12 week placement have real job opportunities to offer. On completion of the placement successful candidates will have the opportunity to be interviewed by the employer & secure the Modern Apprenticeship position

What hours will I work? Full time Monday to Friday.

What will I be doing on the programme?  This course will give you an opportunity to complete introductory construction units in various Trowel Trades and Wood Trades. You can also gain skills in Employability, Health & Safety & Communications, and can develop your practical hand skills.  You will learn by doing practical tasks in the workshop or on external training site areas, and will be taught the underpinning Knowledge Theory in the classroom.

What type of qualification can I get? You’ll work towards a National Progression Award in Construction.

What can I do next? Following the course, you can apply for employment as a Modern Apprentice in the Construction industry or apply for a full-time course Pre Apprenticeship course in one of the Construction trades.

Do I need any qualifications to do this course? No formal qualifications are needed, but you should be able to demonstrate an interest in working in the hospitality sector.

What hours will I work? Monday to Friday 8.00am to 2.00pm, which includes 24 hours per week in college plus a work placement each week.

What will I be doing on the programme?  This course will teach you the basic skills required to begin a career in a hotel or restaurant kitchen.  You will work in the College’s training kitchens, the College refectory and the College restaurant at either the Milton Road or Granton campus. You’ll also work at catering outlets at the other campuses.  The course also covers REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene

What type of qualification can I get? You’ll work towards SCQF Level 4; SVQ 1 Hospitality: Food Preparation & Cooking; Preparation for Employment: First Steps; Building Own Employability Skills; Responsibilities of Employment

What hours will I work? Full time Monday to Friday. For the first 8 weeks you will be in college for 16 hours each week. For the next 10-12 weeks you will be on a work experience placement in the care industry for 3 days a week and at college for two days.

What will I be doing on the programme?  This course aims to give you the skills needed to go into a job in the care sector or to go on further learning opportunities.  You’ll be given the opportunity to learn about the care sector in the classroom at college and then go on to develop this knowledge by completing a work experience placement in care.  You will be expected to complete written work assessments at college as well as doing practical work while on placement.

What type of qualification can I get? You will work towards Intermediate 1/SCQF Level 4 qualifications in Employability; Personal Development; First Aid Care for the Care sector, Communication; Numeracy & Work Experience.

What will I be doing on the programme?  The programme will provide an introduction to hair and beauty  You will spend time at college developing your skills in hairdressing and beauty eg, shampooing and conditioning hair, basic make up application and nail treatments  You will have a work placement as well as attending college  Your work placement may be at the Bliss Salon based at Edinburgh College, Milton Road Campus  You will work on employability skills to help you prepare for finding employment.  You must be interested in working in hairdressing or beauty

What type of qualification can I get? While on the programme you can work towards SQA units in Shampoo and Conditioning Hair and Assist with Colouring Services, VTCT Award in Basic Make-Up Application and Nail Treatments. What will I be doing on the programme?  You will carry out practical tasks relating to railway maintenance and railway track laying in a college workshop or on a railway training site  You will have classroom based training which will teach you the theory and knowledge required to work on rail tracks  Training will include Health and Safety, Communication and Employability skills to help prepare you for finding employment  You must be fit and healthy. You will take and pass a fitness test prior to being offered a place on the programme. This will include testing for drugs and alcohol.

What type of qualification can I get? You will work towards an NVQ 2 in Railway engineering and complete a Critical Safety in Personal Track Safety and Track Indication Course.

What will I be doing on the programme?  You will spend your first 8 weeks at college where you will develop the skills necessary to work in retail eg communication, team work, customer care etc  After 8 weeks you will start to go out on placement one day per week and that will gradually increase to five days per week as you gain confidence and experience  You should be able to demonstrate an interest in working in retail but experience is not essential

What type of qualification can I get? You will work towards NPA Enterprise and Employability (which includes Skills for Customer Care; Working for Yourself; Personal Development: Self & Work; Enterprise Activity; Work Experience) and the Steps to Work Award.

 You will spend the first two weeks at Four Square doing classroom based sessions followed by another week preparing for your work placement  For the next 8 weeks you will be on work placement.  The final two weeks of the programme are back at Four Square when you will review your work placement and prepare for leaving and progressing to your next steps  The programme will also include sessions on Health and Safety, Manual Handling and Work Place Core Competences including Communication Skills, Working with Others, Planning and Decision Making and Taking Personal Responsibility.  Intensive 1-1 support meetings will be available if you need them.

How long does the programme last? 6 weeks.

What hours will I work? Monday – Friday, 6 hours per day.

What will I be doing on the programme?  You will have an initial induction delivered in the Limelight office covering the programme aims & objectives, work placement requirements and training allowance  You will then spend six weeks on a work experience placement within a business environment carrying out basic administration tasks and learning customer service skills  You will also attend a programme of workshops at Limelight’s office to develop your employability skills in areas such as Teamwork and Customer Service Skills  A Limelight mentor will support you throughout the programme

What type of qualification can I get? You will work towards SCQF Level 4 units in Core Skills, Employability and Steps to Work and will also be offered the opportunity to complete units towards the Certificate of Work Readiness.

Do I need any qualifications to go on this programme? If you don’t have any formal qualifications, you should have some relevant work experience. You should be able to show that you are keen to get into a job and would hope to move on from a work placement into a permanent job.

How long does the programme last? 6 months.

What hours will I work? Monday – Friday, 7 hours per day.

What will I be doing on the programme?  You will have an initial induction delivered in the Limelight office covering the programme aims & objectives, work placement requirements and training allowance  You will then spend six months on a work experience placement within a business environment carrying out administration tasks and learning customer service skills  You will also attend a programme of workshops at Limelight’s office to develop your employability skills in areas such as Teamwork and Communication, Customer Care, Dealing with Difficult Situations  A Limelight mentor will support you throughout the programme

What type of training is offered? Employability Skills with either an Administration or Construction work placement.

Who can go on to this programme? 16 and 17 year olds. 18 to 24 year olds not in receipt of benefit. You can also go on this programme if you are aged 18 to 24 and claiming benefits but your application must be made by Job Centre Plus

How long does the programme last? 12 weeks.

What hours will I work? During your induction day you will be at Maximyze from 9.00am – 4.30pm. While on your work placement you will work up to 35 hours per week which will be agreed with your employer.

What will I be doing on the programme?  You will have a one day induction at Maximyze and then go out on your work placement in either administration or construction.  Your work placement may be in Edinburgh, East or and will be agreed between you and Maximyze  The programme is designed to develop your employability skills  If required you may have additional training at Maximize during the programme

What type of qualification can I get? There is no specific qualification that you will work towards on the programme. The emphasis is on gaining work experience and support to make the next progression.

What can I do next? You may progress to a Modern Apprenticeship or full time employment. If you do not gain employment at the end of the programme it may be possible to progress to a further 12 week programme at Stage 4.

This will include an introduction to Mentor, enrolment on the programme, aims and objectives of the programme and information on what you will be expected to learn. You’ll also be introduced to your workplace and be given training on Health and Safety.  During your 12 weeks in the salon, your training programme will cover customer care, timekeeping and attendance, team working and problem solving, and attitudes and behaviours at work.  A member of staff from Mentor will visit you regularly throughout the programme to give you support.

Outdoor experiences include gorge walking, mountain biking, kayaking, high wire zip lining, survival skills and can also involve an overnight residential stay to develop teamwork skills.

Each work placement lasts 8 to 10 weeks and you can choose to work with children, older people or people with additional needs.  You’ll spend 4 days a week at your placement and one day a week at Training for Care.  During your one day per week at Training for Care, you’ll follow a programme of tutorials covering child development, caring skills for working with older people or people with additional needs, confidence building, health and safety, equal opportunities and employability skills.  On placement you’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on work experience under supervision, to learn the job role of an adult care or nursery support worker, plus develop the necessary attitudes and approaches such as encouraging independence and respecting individuality.  At some placements you may be required to work shifts. In all placements you must have good communication skills.

What type of qualification can I get? You’ll work towards a Practical Work Place Skills unit within the SQA Certificate in Work Readiness

What can I do next? This training should help to prepare you for progression on to the Modern Apprenticeship level 2 in Health and Social Care or the Modern Apprenticeship level 3 in Childcare. If an employer offers you a job prior to completing this Stage 3 programme, they will be encouraged to allow you to continue to attend the day release programme.

How much will I be paid? You’ll receive a training allowance of £55 per week. Any weekly travel expenses over £3 will be reimbursed.

How do I apply? If you want to apply for this programme you must demonstrate an interest in care, e.g. have done work experience, voluntary work, babysitting or supporting family members, as well as have an understanding of the commitment and responsibilities involved. Standard Grade English (1-4) is desirable. There will be a literacy test at the interview.

Employability Programme Stage 3 Information for applicants

What type of training is offered? Hairdressing

Who can go on to this programme? 16 – 17 year olds

How long does the programme last? 13 weeks.

What hours will I work? Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

What will I be doing on the programme?  The programme is designed to develop skills in hairdressing and give you experience in a salon.  The first week is spent at the Vincent Bell Training Academy in Bread Street, Edinburgh. During this induction period you will learn about Health & Safety in the workplace, be taught the Vincent Bell Code of Conduct and do some interview preparation. Towards the end of this week you will attend interviews for placements.  Each Monday during weeks 2 to 13, you’ll attend the Vincent Bell Training Academy and work towards NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing. You should complete this qualification before the end of the 13 week programme.  From Tuesday to Friday during weeks 2 to 13, you’ll be on placement in a salon. There you’ll be given the chance to experience the working environment of a salon and to see how a salon operates.  During your time in the salon your employer can assess how well you are working and, if they feel that you are working well, may offer you full time employment and Modern Apprenticeship.

What type of qualification can I get? You’ll work towards NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing.

What can I do next? Although there is no guarantee of full time employment, it is Vincent Bell Training Academy’s policy only to work with salons who are planning to employ a Modern Apprentice.

How much will I be paid? You’ll receive a training allowance of £55 per week. Any weekly travel expenses over £3 are reimbursed.

Employability Programme Stage 3 Information for applicants

What type of training is offered? Employability skills.

Who can go on to this programme? 16 and 17 year olds.

How long does the programme last? 13 to 16 weeks.

What hours will I work? 35 hours per week. The exact hours will be agreed with your work placement employer, but will generally be 7 hours per day.

What will I be doing on the programme?  This programme is designed to help develop your employability skills and provide you with work placement(s)  You’ll spend the first two days on an induction programme (either at Constitution Street, Leith or at an East Lothian venue), which will include introduction to WorkingRite and information on Health and Safety.  This induction will be followed by a work placement. You’ll have an opportunity to discuss the kind of work you would like to do with WorkingRite, before going on placement. Your placement will most likely be in East Lothian. Typical work placements include construction and care work.  A member of staff from WorkingRite will visit you on your work placement to give you on-going support.

What type of qualification can I get? You’ll work towards the SQA Certificate of Work Readiness.

What can I do next? If you haven’t obtained employment by the end of the programme, you may be able to go on to the 13 week Stage 4 programme, which will give you more work experience.

How much will I be paid? You’ll receive a training allowance of £55 per week plus a further £35 per week from your placement employer. Any weekly travel expenses over £3 will be reimbursed.
