May 30th, 2021 5 Trinity Sunday A Look at the Readings for Trinity Sunday The word “Trinity” is never found in the Bible. The earliest known usage is in a correspond- ence of a North African Christian named Tertuillian around AD 200. The way Tertuillian uses the term assumes his reader is familiar with the term. The term was apparently already in common us- age by Christians even by Tertuillian’s time. Some modern scholars like to assert that the whole concept of the Trinity is something later Christians conjured out of whole cloth for their own political or theological reasons, but in the Gospel reading today, we have the clearest Trinitarian formula found anywhere in the Bible. Jesus clearly has invited his remaining disciples to meet him at some holy mountain, and He commissions them to go out and baptize all nations “in the name of the Fa- ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This is the precise formula used for baptism to this very day. In fact, the Church will not recognize baptisms that are done with some other invocation that does not use this formula and clearly invoke the Three Persons of the Trinity by name at the time of Baptism. What is particularly interesting is that Matthew closes his Gospel with this invocation of what we now call the Trinity. Matthew comes full circle in his story telling because he began his Gospel narrative with perhaps the most famous words heard every year on Christmas, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel.” The rest of Matthew’s Gos- pel intentionally never returns to this image until today’s reading when Jesus clearly fulfills the prom- ise that He is “God With Us.” Jesus is now permanently present in His Church. What is often overlooked in the Great Commission to baptize is that Jesus also commissions the Disciples to go out and teach all those baptized what He has taught them. Jesus clearly sets Himself above even the great lawgiver and prophet, Moses. Moses clearly dies and is not with the Israelites as they go into Promised Land. Jesus, by contrast is “with you always until the end of the age.” The only person who can claim such a thing is Emmanuel, or “God With Us.” Only God is ev- erlasting and omnipresent. While a mystery, let us give thanks that today the Christmas message is realized and becomes present to us in the Sacraments and teachings of the Church. Kid’s Corner
