Ruabon News Letter 239 03.09.2018

Becca Quayle, Dave Green, Jo Smith, Tomos Hughes and Tricia Jones

All the hard work and planning of many, many events has finally paid off! Numerous members of have worked together and have raised the amount required to purchase the FIRST TWO defibrillators for emergency use by the public 24/7, in our village.

The first of these, has already been mounted on the wall of The Duke Pub, with the complete support of Marston’s Brewery. The photo above shows its hand-over by Tomos Hughes of the Welsh Ambulance Service and the photo to the left shows it in situ. Becca Quayle, Manager of the Duke, is determined to hold an Open Day shortly, to celebrate the installation; to say ‘thank you’, to everyone who has supported this project and to have demonstrations to show how the defibrillator is operated.

EEPING PASSENGERS KEEPING PASSENGERS IN THE KNOW

RYGO is the new bus tracking app which allows the public to track the whereabouts of the bus they are waiting for. “But, bus companies have to sign up to join.” Mike Jones has sent in the information above; he is a former Ruabon resident who still has strong family ties here and visits regularly. Mike’s employment background is “Transport” which continues to be his passion and concern; his advice is that passengers should ask their bus companies whether they are signed up to this new facility. 10

"Unacceptable” level of police assaults

Tuesday 28 Aug 2018

Police in North were assaulted seven times over the busy Bank Holiday weekend. In incidents in Caernarfon, Bangor, Bala, Wrexham and Flintshire, an officer had his eye gouged whilst others were head butted, kicked, pushed and scratched resulting in a broken nose, cuts and bruises. Four people have been charged with five assaults on officers in Gwynedd, a further two offenders have been arrested in Wrexham and work continues to apprehend others suspected to be involved in the other incidents. To improve the safety of officers the number of Taser trained officers has increased to nearly 300 in local policing spread across the force area, with additional cover from our firearms officers. Chief Constable Pritchard said: “What we want is to make sure that our officers are equipped to protect themselves as best they can and to feel confident out on duty on our streets. Tasers and also body worn video play an important part in this.” He added: “We are urging people to ensure they lock their doors and close their windows as opportunist thieves will take advantage of an insecure property, which can have a devastating effect.” If anyone has any information relating to the burglaries or witnessed any suspicious behaviour or activity please contact Central CID on 101 via the web live chat http://www.north-wales.police.uk/contact/chat- support.aspx or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Bookstart in our libraries Bookstart is the world's first national book-gifting programme and aims to encourage a love of books, stories and rhymes in children from as young an age as possible. Every child in England and Wales is entitled to a free Bookstart pack at two key stages before school. Bookstart also offers free packs for children with additional needs, tips and guidance on reading together, resources and activities, and much more. They encourage families to share books, stories and rhymes from the first few months of life, to enjoy books and develop a love of reading for pleasure. Reading and sharing books, stories and rhymes from an early age supports a range of outcomes, including positive early language, oracy and communication skills development, relationship-building/ parent-child bonding and early literacy and staff in library services understand the importance of reading from a very young age. Bookstart has potentially reached over 8 out of 10 eligible children in Wrexham. Over 2613 pack have been distributed via the library service in the last 12 months in the area. BookTrust believe that children who have an early introduction to books and are read to every day, benefit educationally, culturally, socially and emotionally. 15

Meet the Buyer in Wrexham (05/09/2018) 18

Local businesses are invited to meet the buyer at an event in Wrexham, with the potential of working on local school extension projects. Read Construction, the main contractor, is looking to connect with local businesses at the free Meet the Buyer event. The projects include the extensions of three local primary and secondary schools. The main contractor would like to raise awareness to local businesses of the opportunities available and are looking to sub-contract within this project and a number of other projects in North Wales. They are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in meeting with the following trades: rain screen cladding, brickwork, technical glazing, mastic, soft play surfacing, handrails and balustrading, single ply membrane roofing, school furniture, fencing, landscaping and plastering. “Read have actively encouraged local supply chain involvement to schemes for many years and we’re committed as ever to engaging local companies on the Wrexham school projects” said Iolo Rhys. “This is an excellent opportunity to meet our team, discuss prospects and start or renew partnerships.” This event includes allocated 1-2-1 appointments with the Read Construction team. If you would like an appointment, registration is essential, and you will be contacted to arrange an appointment time. Companies that do not register for an appointment by 29th August will not be seen. To register your interest in the event, please send your name, company, telephone number and type of trade/service to [email protected] by 29th August . Learning at Lunchtime: Beginner Family History (05/09/2018) This session will look at creating a family archive, the sources that are available online including how to search using Ancestry, and what is available to aid family research at the Archives search room.
