Treasurer’s Report: Peter Lyons

In the Annual Meeting packet are 5 reports.

1. 2016-2017 Budget vs Actual. Most of the deficit comes from lending $17,000 to the Stone Lease Program to purchase additional stones. This money will be paid back to the Operating Account quarterly. $2,000 payment was made before the close of the fiscal year and a $2,000 payment will be made at the end of the month. All 37 sets of stones are currently leased out.

2. Assets Sheet This shows a comparison of this past fiscal year ending 2016-2017. The Operating Account and the Money Market combined total $100,949.52 at the close of the fiscal year. Current balance is $101,011.64. We have several large bills to pay prior to the start of our dues collection period in December, Accountant’s fees, insurance, newsletter and Annual Meeting expenses. The Operating Account includes $3,919.04 from last year’s junior camp earmarked for upcoming junior camps.

3. Profit & Loss For fiscal 2017-2018. The budget was based on a projected revenue of $76,400.00, including $4,400.00 from the USCA for the 2016-2017 play down season. With revenue of $87,138.93 and expenses of $78,550.97, the treasury has a surplus of $8,587.96 for fiscal year 2017-2018.

4. Balance Sheet From our Accounting package and is unaudited. Files are currently with McCaffery and Co, CPA.

• Contingency Fund is in the low range per the accountant’s recommendation for a non-profit of our size. They recommend 1 to 1 1/2 years’ worth of expenses. Peter recommended to the Executive board that we increase the Contingency Fund by $10,000.00 this year. This is a restricted account. • The Memorial Trust has 3 outstanding loans (Peachtree, Petersham and Utica) and all are being paid on schedule. The total outstanding amount is $17,346.00. Peachtree’s first payment is not due yet. Petersham $20,000.00 loan has one payment of $1,749.00 left and is due by June 2018 • The Legacy Trust granted its first request of $27,157.28 from Charlotte Curling Association for heaters. This loan is being repaid on schedule. The outstanding balance is $18,552.99. This will be paid in full in August 2021. Pittsburg received a loan of $55,000.00 with a second loan of $20,000.00 anticipated. The first payment is not due yet. • The 2nd Century Fund has exceeded its reserve with a balance of $46,607.82.

5. Final Report The proposed budget for fiscal year 2018-2019 based on expected revenue of $71,094.00 for dues, $5,156.00, a reimbursement from the USCA for the 2017-2018 play down registrations and $1,500.00 in advertising. With the anticipated passage of the NMP, next year’s reports will look quite different.

The Executive Board approved Gwen’s suggestion to follow the USCA model for discount membership dues for the first two years so new clubs can become financially stable. A 66% discount year one and a 33% discount year two. Of the $76,100.95 in dues collection, $56,043.00 from dedicated ice clubs, $18,457.28 from arena ice clubs, $1,267.67 from paper clubs and $330 from natural ice.

The Executive Board signed a 3-year contract with Goldline Curling Supplies. Each club gets a 10% discount below wholesale prices.

McCafferty and Co, CPA conducted their 5th annual review of the GNCC last May. The accountants are extremely happy with the redundancy built into our system.

Peter is pleased to report that the GNCC is in sound financial standing and there is no plan to increase dues.

Carl Thomas makes a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Maryann Vermeulan seconds it. All are in favor.

President’s Report: Gwen

Gwen has been involved in the Curling community in 1988 and 11 years later she joined the GNCC Board. Gwen has served the GNCC for the past 19 years. Gwen thanks Joel Leneker for his creativity with the Anniversary Pin and tartan. She also commends Joel on his successful “Curl Up with a Partner” program. Gwen researched our 150 years of history to create the 298-page book of the History of the GNCC. She thanks George Shirk for serving as her editor. Gwen will continue to be a part of the GNCC as part of the Mentoring Program. There are nine new clubs what have joined in the past 2 years and our membership grew from 4,919 to 5,704. Gwen thanks the Club Reps, Club Presidents and the GNCC Board for all they’ve done and she is confident, with the new governance changes that GNCC will be able to successfully move forward as we start our next 150 years.

Events Leading to Nationals: Maryann Vermeulan

The full report can be found in the Annual Meeting folder. Maryann thanked Michael Stefanik, Emily Anderson and Joel Leneker for their help with the Juniors and the Mixed Events. Maryann thanks Emily Anderson for accepting the position as the GNCC Junior Coordinator.

Maryann reports on the Events leading to Nationals • The Men’s and Women’s Club Championships. The two events were combined because of the low number of Women’s teams registering. 6 Women’s teams and 17 Men’s teams entered.

• The GNCC has awarded Team Stopera from Ardsley as the GNCC Club National Playdown champions by defeating Team Guzman from Broomstones at Club Nationals.

• This was year 2 of the Junior U-18 Regional Championship. The Men’s team which included Eli Clawson, Daniel Casper, Marius Kleinas and Christopher Pingitore placed fourth in the National Finals and the Women’s team which included Susan Dudt, Rebecca Rodgers, Anna Cenzalli, and Sydney Mullaney won the Silver Medal at Nationals.

• 7 teams competed in the GNCC Mixed Championship held in Rochester. The GNCC Champions were Rochester’s team of Caitlin Maroldo, Jeff Pulli, Rebecca Anderson and Jason Scott who finished fourth in this event.

• The USA team skipped by Ardsley’s Andrew Stopera competed at the World’s Junior Championship in Scotland and finished in fourth place. Sara Anderson and Korey Dropkin finished 13th overall in the World’s Mixed Doubles Championship in Sweden. Three curlers, coached by Wayne Anderson competed in the 2017 World’s Mixed Championship in Switzerland last October. The team consisted of Hunter Clawson, Emily Anderson, and Caleb Clawson. They earned a spot in the finals but lost to Sweden in an extra end.

• Officials: To maintain the quality of our championships, we have increased our pool of umpires. At our request, the USCA scheduled officiating training at GNCC locations for the past two seasons. The USCA lists over 300 certified officials but this list is clearly outdated. Maryann is working with Chief Umpires Ken McPartlin and Herb Kupchik to identify all the officials within the GNCC.

2nd Vice President’s Report: Benj Guzman

Benj reports that it’s great to see all the events that the GNCC holds as well as the volunteers who come out to help.

5 and Under Events Update • 5 and Under Events grow the sport of curling and allows curlers to play with their peers in a competitive setting. The Child’s Challenge: Women’s 5 and Under Event was held in Rochester this year with 26 teams competing. The Hammer team of Rochester won. • Francis Dykes was held in Potomac with 35 teams competing. The Schmel Rink from Bucks County won. • The Kayser is a 5 and Under Mixed Event and a team from Triangle won.

Greg Eisenhauer from TCC announced that their club hosts an 5 and Under event, the Worcester Cup. It will be held on March 10th and its invitation only. See Greg if anyone is interested in receiving an invite.

Arena Championship Updates • This year it was held in Virginia at Triangle Curling Club. Allen Shaw and his team from Palmetto won.

Senior Event Updates • The Senior Men’s Championship was held at Broomstones with 18 teams competing. Mark Kanakis’ team from Nashua Country Club won this event. • The Senior Women’s Championship was held at Plainfield with 14 teams competing. Carol Arkellian of Plainfield won this event. • The Mixed Seniors was held at Petersham and Dave P and his team from Utica won this event.

Ross Tarlton Update • This event was held at the Granite Club in Toronto this year. The US won with 413 points over with 394 points.

50th Gordon International Update • This event was held in Rochester and Utica this year. There was a tie of 288 points, first tie ever in 50 years.

Gordon Emmett Update • This event was held at Petersham with 10 teams competing. Paul Vole and his team from Petersham won this event.

Carl Thomas explains how a team enters the International event (Ross Tarlton and Gordon International). The GNCC is broken up into brackets. The first team consists of GNCC officers, the second team consists of the person running the event and the third team consisting of the hosting club. The rest of the spots go to clubs in brackets. There are 66 clubs but we cannot have 66 teams so a rotation was created for invitations so many different clubs can play. The larger the club will get the invite more frequently and smaller clubs will get it less frequent. They also have a Legacy Skip who is eligible to play.

Benj announced a new GNCC event, Mixed Doubles. The event planner is Murray Jackson from Triangle Curling Club. More information will be forthcoming. A trophy or pin needs to be donated to this event.

Greg E. from TCC announced that they will be having the 100th Howard Stockton Cup February 8-11. This is a men’s event and they are looking to expand to 32 teams. This is invitation only so see Greg for more details. TCC is also hosting a Mixed event called The Newell the weekend of January 24-27. Please see Greg for an invitation.

GNCC Junior Camp: Prepared by Emily Anderson Presented by Benj.

• The 2017 GNCC Junior Camp took place at Broomstones and was full at 32 campers. • The 2018 GNCC Junior Camp will be held at Bucks County in August and they plan to accommodate 40 junior curlers. There is a waitlist for this camp. • U-18 had a total of 7 GNCC teams competing at our play downs in Potomac with 5 teams advancing to Nationals. One boys’ team advanced to playoffs and one girls’ team finished 2nd at Nationals.

• Communication: To improve communication between clubs, a shared document was developed with all club junior coordinators email addresses as well as event dates. • Coaching: Developing a GNCC junior coaching mentor/mentee program could be beneficial so new coaches have someone to reach out to. This can be for club curling as well as competitive curling.

MaryJane Walsh (Utica) is involved in college curling. If you have college curlers, please contact her for information. She is looking for a host for the 2021 College Nationals.

1st President’s Update: Charlie Brown

Charlie reminded members that the GNCC offers liability insurance. It’s $11 a member and the Learn to Curl (One Day Curler) is $0.50 a curler.

The hardest part of growing our sport is getting rocks. We have 37 sets of stones and we’ll need more as this growth pattern continues. We spent money from the general fund to purchase new rocks, this will be repaid.

Carl Thomas added that we need handles to go with the new stones. Please contact Carl if you are in need of handles.

For the Good of the GNCC: Various Club

Pittsburg CC: Leonard Jarabeck Update: Bank loan was finalized and they are ready to build their 4-sheet rink. They are willing to talk to other arena clubs transitioning to dedicated ice. They plan to break ground in June. They will have a ramp for wheelchair curling.

Nashua Country Club: Peter Lyons With our new 4-sheet facility, we will be having our Simply Curling Bon Spiel in October, which is an Open and all are invited. The Mixed Bon Spiel will be held in November, the Queen of Hearts will be in February and the Granite will be held in March. All are welcome.

Finger Lakes: Dan Hazlitt They are newer GNCC members. Dan and his wife tried Arena curling and began to introduce curling to people in the area to see if there was any interest. They had about 5 Learn to Curls and then started leagues. They had a total of 130 people for Learn to Curl and 70 dues paying members. He thanks the GNCC because if it wasn’t for the GNCC they wouldn’t have been able to start the club.

French Creek: Adam Reese Their club is one of the newer GNCC clubs and if it weren’t for the GNCC, the rocks program, and the insurance, they wouldn’t be curling. They were mentored by the Pittsburg Club who taught them how to take care of the ice.

Jacksonville Granite: Tom Merit He wasn’t able to attend so he asked Gwen to read a statement from him. They’re a brand-new club, they offered several Learn to Curls, and they have a core group with good support. They rent stones from the GNCC and they’d like Gwen to mentor them. He thanks Bob Hogan for his

help with insurance. Their membership went from 8 people to 60 people in two and a half months.

Utica: Roger Rowlett Utica invites us to come celebrate its 150-year Anniversary. They will be hosting an Open Bon Spiel in December. He discussed issues with the 501c3 nonprofit. There was a tax increase so he urges all club treasurers to go to the website to get more details. Go to www.councilofnonprofits.org then go to new tax laws on nonprofits.

Jersey Pinelands: Jane Sharp The Arena Championship is going to be in West Chester, PA the last week in April. She would like more information on the curling manager website from whomever uses it.

The Country Club: Greg Eisenhauer. Greg is the Ice Mentor for the GNCC and invites anyone who has questions to reach out to him.

Kim Nawyn (USCA) mentions that Kevin Madsen is our top Arena ice maker in the country and he will be at the Member’s Assembly in Albany, NY. He will answer questions on all types of ice but focusing on Arena ice.

Long Island Curling Club: Matt Scheiner Later this year they will be celebrating their 10-year Anniversary. They have a steering committee so they can begin to transition to dedicated ice. Fundraising is needed.

Boston Curling Club: Sam Williams We have funds available for youth curling. Boston CC is a paper club founded in 1858 and it still exists for historical purposes. They have members, collect dues and have very little expenses so they’d like to help fund youth curling. They’ve been donating and they want to continue.

USCA Report: Joel Leneker and Jeff Hannon

Jeff’s term is up. The budget looks great with the success of the Olympics. This is Joel’s first year with the USCA and he’s been able to meet people from all over the country. All the regions are uniquely different. He served on the Membership Committee which was an Ad Hoc committee to assess what was going on around the country from a member’s point of view. GNCC is well represented on the USCA Board. To learn more about the USCA, they urge you to go to the Member’s Assembly in Albany, NY. Jeff, Joel and Kim Nawyn discuss some of the things on the agenda such as mini sessions and a mini bon spiel. And it’s free!

Old Business: Gwen

Curl Up with a Partner: Joel Leneker

This program launched last year and the idea was to get financing for clubs to connect with the community and bring people to their curling club. The USCA gave a grant of $5,000. Some of the money was used for a Coaching Clinic at Broomstones. Schenectady received $250 for sandwiches and refreshments for a Learn to Curl they hosted with an outside group who otherwise would never have curled. Some clubs received $750 for the cost of shipping the Street Curling Kit to their club. Other clubs used this money for instructors and sending equipment. All $5000 was used by GNCC clubs. This program was a huge success.

Gordon Emmett: Ted Paul

This event will be in November at Petersham. He’s asked other clubs if they’d like to host it. If your club is interested please contact Ted.

Gwen thanks Ted for the new trophies cases that were made for the Gordon Emmett medal.

New Business: Gwen

Insurance: Bob Hogan

Full Year Curlers are charged $11 per person. One Day Curlers (Learn to Curl) are charged $0.50 per person for the first 250, then $0.35 per person after that. Bob suggests changing the due date of 12/1 so we will have more accurate data. Our Policy showed that “Corporate Events” are not covered under our policy. However, Bob explains that a “Corporate Event” is considered a “One Day Curler” at his club and these numbers are included in his One Day Curler data. This change needs to be done. On our Insurance Policy, the underwriter allows us to define what a member is. We have Full members and One Day members that are covered. It’s the Mini League Curlers who play 2-5 times a week who are not covered because we are not identifying them as members. The suggestion is to charge $2.00 a day for a 2-5-day curler. Mini leagues need to be defined for insurance and dues purposes. The 2-5-day curler is more apt to get hurt since they are playing the game and not just observing as in a Learn to Curl Program. The board needs to decide what a “member” is. Charlie thinks this may be a 4-year Olympic cycle situation. Bob explains that a

curler can be insured without being a member which will solve a lot of issues with dues and suggest that any club who wants to run a Mini League should contact him.

Mary Colacchio asks if signing a waiver had any impact? Bob says no.

Bylaws/ New Management Plan: Peter Ellis and Charlie Brown

Charlie reports that we are going from a President, 1st vice President, 2nd Vice President to a Chairman and a Vice Chairman. The Chair and Vice Chair will have a 2-year term. The Treasurer will serve a 5-year term, the Secretary will be appointed by the Chair and will be a non-voting Board Member. We are going from 3 Member’s at Large to 9 Managing Directors. Our Region is very large and our growth is in Arena Clubs so we need people from North to South and Dedicated Ice to Arena Ice. We instituted term limits for the Managing Directors. The Managing Directors serve a three-year term and no more than two terms and then it’s mandatory that they leave the Board. After a year off the Board they can serve again. With three different classes, each year we will be bringing three new people onto the Board. This will create turnover and diversity.

Peter E. reports that we needed to delete the positions that were previously in the by-laws and add the new positions. The major changes are in the section that effects the Board of Directors and the section that listed the officers and their duties. The new section will be adapted to the New Management Plan. The reason for doing this was to shorten the terms of each position. The Club Presidents got a copy of this to give input and ideas to the Board before going forward.

Peter E. would like to move that the body accepts the Bylaws that were presented to you. Amber McKernan from Lake Placid seconds.

Peter E asks for a discussion. A few questions were asked: why we changed from Board of Directors to Managing Directors? Peter E explains that we need more people doing more jobs and specific jobs within our Board. Gwen mentions that the Org Chart is in the Annual Meeting Packet. Charlie adds that the boxes on the Org Chart should and will change over time. A question was asked: how long does a person have to wait to get back on the Board after they’ve served? Charlie says one year. Mary Colaccio asked for further explanation of the term limits and positions. She also wanted clarification on the Secretary’s position and term limit. Peter E explains that they are all Managing Directors with the exception of the Chair and Vice Chair. They will be elected separately from the Managing Directors. They did not set a term limit for the appointed Secretary. The Treasurer has a 5-year term limit. Bill Anderson from Rutland asks if there is anything in the Bylaws for bad behavior? Peter E says yes.

The vote is by roll call and we need 2/3 majority for it to pass.
