Continuing Daniel Way's blistering run — with a blockbuster assist by Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi! Completely shattered by recent revelations, Wolverine must now ask himself some hard questions: Can he continue on his quest? Should he? Logan finally remembers who he was, but who — and what — is he now? The answers involve Madripoor, Jubilee, old foes Cyber and Omega Red, and the deadly debut of Daken — the son that Wolverine never knew he had! Learn Wolverine's secret history with Black Widow, and gasp as a savage showdown with Sabretooth draws the manipulative mastermind Romulus out of the shadows! Plus: Ask "what if?" tragedy had turned Logan away from the path of the Wolverine — and on to that of an even more punishing vigilante! Daken: Dark Wolverine #1 Review. Daken seeks a new purpose after the fall of Romulus. Reflective of the series itself, Daken has been fairly aimless in recent months following the dissolution of the Dark and the crumbling of Romulus' empire. Every boy needs a hobby, and Daken's new goal in life is to build his own empire from the ground up. He's even got a fancy new suit to ring in the occasion. Daken: Dark Wolverine #1 is the start of what will probably be a long but hopefully interesting journey to the top for this troubled mutant. Liu and Way do a good job establishing Daken's new mission, and in making this issue reasonably accessible to new readers. If anything, I was surprised that "Empire" wasn't more closely intertwined with the "Wolverine in Hell" business that will supposedly drive this entire publishing line in the coming months. There's only one significant link to that story in this issue, and from all appearances so far that may be the end of the matter for Daken. That may be for the best, as the whole idea with this relaunch is to give Daken a much-needed fresh start. However, the script could do a better job of moving forward and making clear how involved Daken's story will be with the rest of the Wolverine family. Between the oddly framed opening flashback and the scenes of Daken's role in the new shadowy conspiracy against Wolverine, this issue barely has time to usher its main character out the front door on his big mission before the final page. But while the focus in this issue is jumbled at best, this script is nonetheless a strong start for the new book. The monologues and narrative captions are reigned in a bit, just enough so that the introspective tone once again becomes a strength rather than a drawback for the series. Daken finally seems directed towards a tangible goal, and this benefits the story in various ways. The character often walks a tightrope between being a mysterious loner and just plain annoying. For now, at least, Liu and Way are placing him comfortably on the side of the former. The visual quality of Dark Wolverine was very spotty in its final months. Luckily, Giuseppe Camuncoli returns to help bring stability to Daken's world in this relaunch. Camuncoli displays a nice range in this issue, taking Daken from warmly lit dressing rooms full of preening models to seedy, blood-soaked alleyways. Camuncoli also helps sell Daken's new costume better than other artists might have. The basic design never bothered me, but the garish colors and the tendency for most artists to suddenly draw Daken with extra bulk and muscle did. Camuncoli never forgets that Daken is lithe and lean where his father is heavy and imposing. While Frank D'Armata's colors have their usual problems when it comes to flesh tones, in other aspects he brings a muted, understated feel to Daken's world that complements Camuncoli's pencils and Onofrio Catacchio's inks. It's difficult to judge whether Daken: Dark Wolverine will successfully address the flaws of its predecessor. For now, it does seem that this series carries the sense of purpose and importance Dark Wolverine lacked. Daken could be in store for a brighter future in the , even if he's no more heroic now than he ever was.
