2020-21 HHS Awards Night

2020-21 Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team Student/Athletes are selected for the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for not only exceling in athletic competitions but also achieving high academic standards in the classroom. These students have achieved a varsity letter in at least one sport while maintaining a cumulative 4.0 grade point average. The student athletes receiving this recognition are indicated with an asterisk next to their name on pages 2-5.

Hays High Class of 1966 Class Awards The Class Awards of 1966 are a series of four $500 scholarships presented each year, one per class to a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. The scholarships are for any approved post High School education. Hays High Class of 1967 Scholarships For the past five years, the members of the Class of 1967 have been “giving back” to HHS by awarding scholarships to graduating seniors from Hays High School. This year, the class is proud to present eight $500 academic, leadership and civic scholarships in honor of former classmates and other HHS graduates. There are many members of the Class of 1967 in attendance here tonight - including: Debbie Artman, Bernie Haselhorst, Sharon Jacobs Cox, Vicki McConnell, Marion Miller, Dale Montgomery, B.J. Reed, Bill Toepfer, The late Hays High graduates being honored include: (Just read names) • Cyndi Artman Hartman - Cyndi, a member of the class of 1967, was active in many fine arts activities at Hays High, including band, orchestra and choir. She was also in FTA, FNA, Pep Club, and Highlighters. Classmates have come forward and donated funds to provide a $500 scholarship in her name. • Bruce Taggart - Bruce was active in athletics, including , , and intramurals. He also was involved in Science Club, Pep Club and Spanish Club. This $500 scholarship has been made possible by a donation from his family and classmate Bob Kennedy. • Allena Broadbooks Reece - A member of the Class of 1967, Allena was known for making Elvis costumes for his fans and for the day care center she started in Hays. This $500 scholarship was donated in her honor by her classmates. • Jay Lamer Lockwood - Jay was a continuous supporter of the Class of 1967 even after she moved to California her senior year. She was known as an outstanding professional artist on the West Coast. Classmates donated funds to provide two $500 scholarships in her name. • Tom Toepfer – Tom was a member of the Hays High Class of 1968. At Hays High, Tom was editor of the newspaper and an active member of the debate team. After graduating from law school, Tom served on the Board of Education for Hays Unified School District for eight years and president for two years. The Toepfer Board of Education Room was named in honor of Tom and his grandfather. This $500 scholarship was donated by his brother, Bill Toepfer, Class of 1967. • Kathy Toepfer - Kathy was a member of the Hays High Class of 1973 and sister of Bill Toepfer. At Hays High, she was active in many fine arts programs, as a dancer, baton twirler and artist. The $500 scholarship has been donated in her honor by Class of 1967 Sharon Jacobs Cox, her former dance and twirling instructor. • Kathy Lefebvre (Werth) Haselhorst - Kathy was a member of the Hays High Class of 1968 and wife of Bernie Haselhorst, Class of 1967. The $500 scholarship has been donated in her honor by her husband.

Kansas Department of Education Seal of Biliteracy The “Seal of Biliteracy” certificate will be awarded by Kansas State Department of Education and USD #489 to recognize all students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more other world languages by the time they graduate. The recipients of this award are proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Kansas Head Start Alumni High School Senior Scholarship This state-wide award is given to a former Head Start or Early Head Start student. The applicant must demonstrate high academic achievement and service to the community. Casper J. Middlekauff American Legion Auxiliary Unit 173 Scholarship The Casper J. Middlekauff American Legion Auxiliary Unit 173 of Hays awards $300 scholarships annually to a high school senior from Hays High School and Thomas More Prep Marian High School in Hays. Ellis County Senior 4-H Scholarship The Ellis Co. 4-H Scholarship & Development Fund is pleased to present scholarships to graduating seniors who have contributed to the Ellis Co. 4-H program and the community through outstanding participation in Leadership, Citizenship, and 4-H Project work. Over the years, this fund has awarded more than $40,000 4-H seniors. Six scholarships will be awarded this year to area students.

Golden Belt Bank Scholarship Golden Belt Bank is proud to offer two $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Hays High School each year. Pheasants Forever Scholarship The Smoky Hill Pheasants Forever Chapter #424 awards a scholarship each year to a senior that will be attending a school in Kansas. This is a $500 scholarship.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 939 Scholarship The local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 939 raises money for scholarships each year with a beef and gun raffle. Scholarships are awarded to conscientious students who display evidence of good citizenship through volunteer activities, employment during high school, and academic success. This year, Chapter 939 is offering three $1,000 scholarships for post-secondary education or training to area students.

Hays Club Scholarship This local scholarship is given to deserving high school seniors from Hays who have been members of the Hays Wrestling Club for a minimum of two years and have wrestled all four years of high school. The award is based on the student’s involvement in school, community, academics, and their commitment to the sport of wrestling. The Hays Wrestling Club is awarding four scholarships this year in the amount of $500 to area schools. • Presenter: Lance Geyer, Hays Wrestling Club President • Winner: Colter Conger

Nex-Tech “Break the Rules” Scholarship Nex-Tech provides ten $1,000 scholarships each year to high school seniors living in households whose parents or legal guardians receive at least one Nex-Tech residential or business service. Applicants were required to submit a short media presentation, showcasing their passion and future career. This year, three Hays High School seniors were awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Nex-Tech Youth Tour Scholarship Award Each year, Nex-Tech, through its association with FRS, selects and sponsors students to attend a free Youth Tour trip to Washington D.C., typically held in June. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the tour in 2020, and this year, the tour was again cancelled. To recognize the selected students for their achievements in lieu of a trip, Nex-Tech’s Board of Directors decided to award a $1,500 scholarship to be used for post-secondary education. Two of the three selected students are from Hays High.

Shelter Insurance Foundation Scholarship The Shelter Insurance Foundation Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship made possible by the Shelter Insurance Foundation, an organization created for charitable and educational purposes, awarded by Dustin Schumacher and Todd Keller, agents for the Shelter Insurance Companies. The winner is selected by an impartial committee who considers academic achievement, leadership, citizenship, moral character, and educational goals.

Hays High Helping Hands Scholarship The Helping Hands Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to Hays High School seniors who have successfully completed the Hays High School Helping Hands Course. Students must have completed and passed all three classes that make up the Helping Hands curriculum: Event Plan and Management, Community Connections and Culinary Applications. Recipients must use funds to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities. Scholarship award amount is $250. Two scholarships will be awarded to qualifying seniors.

HHS Family and Consumer Science Department The HHS Family and Consumer Science Department will award three $500 scholarships to HHS seniors who have successfully completed a minimum of four FCS courses. Recipients must use funds to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities.

Hays High FFA Chapter Scholarship The Hays FFA Members, its advisor, and its many supporters are proud to offer six scholarships to our graduating seniors. Hays FFA scholarship amounts are based upon the level of participation that these members have shown throughout their high school years. This year’s scholarships total $10,672.

Hays FFA Chapter Degree The Hays High FFA Chapter Degree is awarded to Sophomore and Junior Hays High FFA members who have applied and met several qualifications, including planning and conducting 3 official chapter functions, demonstrated 5 parliamentary procedures, have received the Greenhand Degree, and have a GPA of 2.0 or above. Cody Joseph Younger FFA Memorial Scholarships The fondness of farming, love of the outdoors, dedicated and hardworking are a few of the traits of a young man who knew no stranger and always demonstrated a willingness to help others. His memory will always be kept alive through the Cody Younger FFA Memorial Scholarships. This scholarship is awarded to one FFA senior male and one FFA senior female.

America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders exists to make youth aware of the various career opportunities within the industry of agriculture by providing scholarships that help further their education. The Monsanto Fund, a philanthropic arm of Bayer, offers $1,500 scholarships to students pursuing a career in various sects of agriculture.

Ford Trucks/Built Ford Tough Scholarships In 1998 Ford started supporting the National FFA Organization by being one of the first dealer scholarship programs and awarded $405,000 to 405 students. After years of continued support and thousands of recipients more than $12.4 million in scholarships have been awarded by Ford dealers in across the nation. At a cost of $500 to the dealer and $635 to Ford corporate, Ford will match a total of 500 scholarships that will be awarded in the name of the partnering dealer. Better Business Bureau Scott Mecham Student of Integrity Award Scholarship This scholarship is not listed in the program. The Better Business Bureau Scott Mecham Student of Integrity Award Scholarship from the Kansas Plains promotes ethics and integrity among young people so they may be motivated to continue incorporating moral values into every aspect of their lives. Twelve graduating students who have demonstrated outstanding community service, leadership and personal integrity annually receive $2,000 scholarships from BBB’s Education Foundation for their post-secondary education expenses at any accredited institution. Winners were chosen across BBB’s service area of The Kansas Plains, Omaha/Southwest Iowa; Lincoln/Greater Nebraska; and South Dakota.

Kansas Association of Directors of Plant Facilities The Kansas Association of Directors of Plant Facilities promotes bringing the buildings and grounds profession to a greater height of knowledge and professionalism. To that end, KADPF has established a scholarship fund and will award three $1,000 academic scholarships and one $1,000 technical scholarship to qualifying students. These scholarships are available only to graduating seniors of non-instructional support staff who wish to continue their education at the college level. The students must graduate from a Kansas high school and plan to attend a Kansas College or technical school.

Horatio Algers State Scholar State scholarships are awarded to eligible students in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The program specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. The scholarships are funded by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have experienced challenges but ultimately overcame them to become successful business and civic leaders. Scholarships are valued at $10,000 each.

Jordyn Claiborn Free Spirit Award The Free Spirit Award is given each year to honor the life of Jordyn Claiborn, who was killed in a car accident 9/11/09. Jordyn lived a short but abundant life. She loved God, her family, friends and laughing. We will forever be amazed at the impact she made and the spirit of freedom that filled her. One award in the amount of $750 will be given this year. Jordyn’s parents are unable to attend tonight’s ceremony.

Ana Hertel Scholarship The Ana Hertel Scholarship is given to two seniors who have demonstrated high morals, integrity, and excellence while attending Hays High School. The Hertel family observed their daughter, Ana, portray these same characteristics and she taught others to do the same. Recipients of these awards are challenged to not only achieve in your area of interest, but to teach and help others to do the same. The Hertel Family is proud of your accomplishments; Ana would be honored to know that an award named after her was given to these two very deserving people. Each senior will receive $500.

Bill Auman Family Scholarship This scholarship is created to honor the memory of Bill Auman. Bill raised his family here, started Auman Co and was very active in the Hays community. He encouraged others to continue their education. This scholarship is for $2,500.

Bob Kuhn Courage Award The Coach Bob Kuhn Courage Award is awarded to a senior boy and girl. The criteria for selecting the winners are the qualities that former HHS Coach Bob Kuhn exemplified: Exceptional perseverance in overcoming adversity, involvement in community service, discipline, and caring . . . an example to others.

Hays High Student Council Leadership Scholarship Student Council will award one $500 scholarship to a senior who has served as a leader in some capacity in our school or in the community. Student Council membership and participation is a requirement.

American Red Cross Blood Services Young Minds Change Lives Scholarship – CERTIFICATES PROVIDED The American Red Cross will award four $250 scholarships to Hays High seniors who have volunteered in some capacity in their school or community and assisted with blood drives or donations. While applicants do not have to have been blood donors, the number and amount of these scholarships awarded is dependent on how much blood is donated during the Hays Red Cross Club Blood Drive.

Hays High June Reynolds National Honor Society Scholarship The National Honor Society seeks to recognize exemplary student performance considering the four pillars of NHS membership: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Hays High June Reynolds Chapter of National Honor Society awards scholarships recognizing exemplary student performance based on the four pillars of NHS membership. United States Marine Corp Scholastic Excellence Award The United States Marine Corp Scholastic Excellence Award recognizes noteworthy academic achievement and leadership in high school students. This recognition is awarded to one male and one female student who is an exemplary young citizen and role model for their peers. Award recipients need not necessarily be “straight A” students, they may well be those students who have shown the greatest degree of academic improvement over the past semester or year.

United States Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award The United States Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award is awarded to one male and one female student athlete who is selected using the following criteria: the student is an exemplary young citizen and role model for younger athletes and exhibits the personal traits of courage, poise, self-confidence, and leadership.

The “Semper Fidelis” Award for Musical Excellence The United States Marine Corp Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence is presented to a student who displays essential Marine Corp traits of a good leader: Endurance, Knowledge, Unselfishness, Dependability, Enthusiasm and Loyalty. Award recipients are not necessarily the most outstanding musicians but have contributed to the success of the band program and demonstrated diligence, dedication, and musical excellence as a bandsman and soloist.

Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen Award The DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The student selected by their school must have the following qualities: Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by their state board of education. United States citizenship is not required.

Courtney-Spalding Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution Challenge Coin Members of the U.S. military have a long-standing tradition of carrying a special coin symbolizing unit identity and fellowship. Known to generations of American military personnel as ‘The Challenge Coin’, they are a vital part of military life today and are revered by troops in every branch of service. The Courtney-Spalding Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, wish to recognize seniors enlisted in military service and present them with their first Challenge Coin along with all the best in their military endeavors.

KSHSAA Citizenship Award The KSHSAA Citizenship Award is given to one male and one female who participates in sports and/or activities on behalf of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and is awarded with these criteria in mind: Respect: Shows respect for the students, citizens, and leaders of the school and community and demonstrates a tolerance and respect for the beliefs and rights of others. Responsibility: Demonstrates the willingness to assume citizenship responsibilities in school and community and displays good sportsmanship whether as a participant or spectator, and Reverence: Shows reverence, concern and respect for the well-being of others.

Governors Scholars Award Each year the Governor of the Great State of Kansas recognizes one-percent of high school graduates at a Governor’s Scholar Award Program in Topeka. Recognition is based on academic excellence, citizenship, contribution to one’s school and community, and ACT Score.

National Merit Scholarship Finalist Over 1.5 million juniors entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2019 Preliminary SAT which served as an initial screen of program entrants. In September 2020, approximately 17,000 Semifinalists were designated Semifinalists representing one percent of the nation’s seniors. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists had to fulfill requirements to advance to Finalist standing. Each Semifinalist was asked to complete a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay and providing information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official. Gannett Kansas’s 2021 All-State Academic Team Each year, Gannett Kansas chooses the All-State Academic Team, a recognition of the best and brightest young minds the Sunflower State has to offer. One graduating senior per high school in Kansas can be nominated by their principal or guidance counselor for consideration. Out of the more than 250 nominations for this award, 30 students were selected to the All-State Academic Team and will go on to become the region’s All-District team.

Kansas Honor Scholar Since 1971, the KU Alumni Association has sponsored the Kansas Honor Scholars Program for students who rank academically in the top 10% of their senior class. This year is unique not only because of COVID-19, but also because it marks the 50th anniversary of the program. Students receiving this award and attending the University of Kansas may be eligible to receive one of the scholarships specifically established for Kansas Honors Scholars. The annual presentation of this award was not held this fall and will be held virtually in May.

The Kansas State Department of Education Certificate for Exceptional Academic Performance This certificate is awarded to seniors who achieved a composite score of 32 or above on the ACT assessment. The composite score of 32 places these students in the top 2% of college-bound students in the entire United States.

Hays Rotary Club Scholarship The Hays Rotary Club supports its local high schools and colleges by awarding two scholarships per year to Hays students attending Fort Hays State University, one from HHS and one from TMP. Dane G. Hansen Scholarships The purpose of Dane G. Hansen scholarships is to recognize young people of exceptional ability. Students graduating from high schools in 26 counties in Northwest Kansas are eligible for Hansen Scholarships. Four scholarship categories are awarded for high school seniors: Hansen Career & Technical Education, Hansen Student, Hansen Scholar, and Leader of Tomorrow. Total scholarship amount awarded for the 2020-2021 year is $322,000.

Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award The Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award is named in honor of a former HHS student who lived her life with a physical disability but attend nearly every event that involved the Hays High Indians - always there to support our student athletes. Selected by the HHS coaches, the Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award is presented to an adult community fan, a student fan, and a USD 489 Faculty/Staff fan of the year.

Hagan Scholarship Foundation The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship for high achieving, goal- driven students. The scholarship provides up to $6,000 each semester to pay unmet educational costs for up to eight consecutive semesters, providing each recipient with the opportunity to graduate college debt-free. This fall, Hagan Scholars from 46 states will attend 409 colleges and universities.

Fort Hays State University Tiger Pride Scholarship ($150,000) Recipients must have a composite ACT score of 27 or higher. $3,750 per year and is renewable for up to three additional years. Over the course of 4 years, the scholarship totals $15,000.

Academic Booster Club Scholarship The Academic Booster Club (ABC) Scholarship is presented to deserving seniors who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and are involved in co-curricular activities and/or employment during their high school years. Those that qualify submit an application that is then reviewed and scored by volunteers of the Academic Booster Club. The number of scholarships and the amount is determined by the funds raised from the club’s annual fundraiser which is selling the suite seats at Lewis Field Stadium for a HHS football game. This year, 19 $500 scholarships will be awarded by the Academic Booster Club.

Athletic Booster Club Scholarship The Hays High School Athletic Booster Club Scholarships are given to four deserving seniors, each award is $500. Two males and two females are selected using these pre-requisites: Has earned a 3.0 or better GPA, has lettered in at least one sport during the senior year, demonstrate good sportsmanship, both on and off the playing surface, and future plans include attending college or technical school next year. This year the scholarship will be awarded to two females and two males.

Outstanding Athlete Awards The Jack Roberts Female Outstanding Athlete Award, given to this year’s most outstanding female athlete, is named in honor of Jack Roberts who was a principal at Hays High. Mr. Roberts was a very strong advocate of athletics for young women and did very much to advance and promote this cause. The Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Award, given to this year’s most outstanding male athlete.
