Highlights

Grand Valley State claims crown; dominate from start to fi nish: Grand Valley State led from start to fi nish en route to claiming its second consecutive NCAA Division II Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships team title. The Lakers dominated from the opening event and scored 94 points, 43 more than second-place Adams State. Lincoln (Missouri) fi nished third (43) and Central Missouri fourth (42). The Lakers won fi ve events and claimed three second-place fi nishes. “I am so proud of our team and this was a total team eff ort as we scored points in so many events from the fi eld events and the events,” said head coach Jerry Baltes. “When you look at the results and we have fi ve national championship event winners, three second- place fi nishes and fi ve additional top-eight placers that earned All-American honors, you see how strong our entire team was.” Senior Lauren Buresh won the shot put title on the fi nal throw of her indoor career. Buresh, who has now won three consecutive Division II shot put championships (2012 indoor, 2011 outdoor, 2011 indoor), tallied a throw of 52 feet, 10¼ inches, bettering the toss of teammate Sam Lockhart, who was in fi rst before Buresh’s toss and eventually fi nished second (52-4¾). Lockhart captured the 20-pound weight throw with a meet record of 67 feet, 6 inches. Senior Rachel Patterson crossed the fi nish line fi rst in the 5,000-meter run in a championships-record time of 16:07.28, smashing the previous mark of 16:16.77 held by former Laker Mandi Zemba. The other Grand Valley State champions were Kristen Hixson in the pole vault and the distance medley relay unit of Betsy Graney, Leiah Hess, Lisa Galasso and Patterson. Senior Chanelle Caldwell fi nished second in the 800-meter run (2:10.26). Kalena Franklin earned All-America honors with her seventh- place fi nish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53), while Karie McDonald fi nished sixth (4:53.88) and Betsy Graney seventh (4:54.61) in the mile run to receive All-America status. Indira Spence highlighted Adams State’s eff ort by placing third in the 60- and 200-meter dashes and the 60-meter hurdles. Amanda Putt of Hillsdale (800-meter and mile runs) and Jillisa Grant of New Mexico Highlands (200-meter dash and long jump) each won two events.
