•Making Catholicism relevant •Restoring women’s ordination •Living the change we envision Feast of Pentecost May 23, 2021 Prelude As we prepare to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, we invite you to enjoy this international online choir singing Veni, Sancte Spiritus. https://youtu.be/us-v4slsUX4 Introduction & Welcome Voice 1: Welcome to Mary Magdalene the Apostle Catholic Community based in San Diego, California, on the land that the Kumeyaay people have tended for generations. We gather today from locations all around the world. Though we are separated by distance, we remain united in love. Know that wherever you are and whoever you are, you are welcome here, just as you are. We are glad you are joining us. For the best worship experience for all, we ask that you remain muted you for the majority of the service. Despite being muted, we encourage you to sing along at home and to join us in saying the spoken responses in bold. During the prayers of the people, we invite you to unmute yourself and offer your prayer intentions aloud. Prayer intentions can also be offered in the chat at any point in time. You may wish to have bread and wine or something similar for communion. After our liturgy concludes, we invite you to stay on as we gather for some social time. 1 Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, a celebration of the Breath of God and the Holy Spirit descending on the disciples. We remember especially today those who have lost their breath to the corona virus and our siblings of color, particularly black men, whose anguished cries of “I can’t breathe” have too often fallen on deaf ears as they were killed by those who should have protected them. We acknowledge our complicity in the systemic white supremacy and racism that pervades our country. I invite you now to take a breath, a precious breath, before we begin our opening song. Opening Song – Envía tu Espíritu Hurd Envía tu Espíritu, envía tu Espíritu, envía tu Espíritu, sea renovada, la faz de la tierra. Sea renovada, la faz de la tierra. Spirit of the living God, burn in our hearts, and make us a people of hope and compassion. R Wind of promise, wind of change, friend to us all, empower your people to make peace and justice. R Breath of life and holiness, heal ev’ry wound, and lead us beyond ev’ry sin that divides us. R Opening Rite Presider: We begin our liturgy by blessing the name of our God - who is Love - with the sign of our faith: + In the name of God, who is Speaker, Word, & Breath. Amen. Presider: May the grace of Jesus the Christ, the love of God, and the peace of the Holy Spirit be with you. Voice 2 & all: And also with you. Knowing God’s Loving Kindness Presider: Spirit! Power and Passion of our being... Voice 2 & all: press upon our hearts Your profound love. Move through the fragments of our days; enable us to sense Your fiery Presence consecrating our most insignificant moments. 2 Presider: Spirit! Source of Vision, Perceptive Guide... Voice 2 & all: permeate the moments of our choices when falsehood and truth both call to us. Turn us toward the way of goodness, so that we will always lean toward Your love. Opening Prayer From the Women’s Ordination Worldwide Pentecost Liturgy, prepared and hosted by WATAC (Women in the Australian Church), May 16, 2021. Presider: Come Sophia spirit, breathe your gifts into us as we struggle for justice. Come Spirit of courage, enlighten our resistance, our insistence, our persistence. Come Spirit of peace, unite races and nations to stop wars and violence. When we are fearful challenge us to act bravely, When we are lonely, bless us with communities of love and compassion, When we are weary replenish us with bold dreams. Spirit of understanding, open our hearts to those who are pushed to the Margins. Spirit of wonder, open our beings to the magnificence of creation. Spirit of wisdom, spark in us a new fire. Amen, blessed be, let it be so. Voice 1 & all: Amen. First Reading Acts 2:1-13 Adapted by the MMACC liturgy committee Voice 1: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles: When the day of Pentecost arrived, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in their own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in our own native language? 3 They were all astounded and bewildered, and said to one another, “What does this mean?” But others said, scoffing, “They have had too much new wine.” And in our own time… We are San Diegans – from all over the county – Poway and Del Mar to the North, Chula Vista and Spring Valley to the South, from coastal cities and urban neighborhoods, as well the East County communities of El Cajon, Santee and Jamul. Some of us live as far away as Palm Springs, San Luis Obispo, and Albuquerque, yet we hear a variety of tongues proclaiming of the mighty acts of God. Our region is blessed with a multitude of languages – we hear Spanish, Vietnamese, Polish and Tagalog. There are Chaldeans in East County who pray in Aramaic and Ethiopians in City Heights who pray in Amharic. We hear Brazilian immigrants speaking Portuguese -- as well as travelers from Europe speaking German, Italian and French. This great diversity, now as then, reveals something at the very heart of God. Alleluia is our song! Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Voice 2 & all: Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 104:1-2+4, 24+29-30, 31+33-34 Resp. Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes Our sung response is: Let the Spirit rise up, let it break through the walls And beat down the doors, and crash through the windows And cover the earth, the earth, the earth, the earth Let the Spirit rise up, let it break through the walls And beat down the doors, and crash through the windows And cover the earth, the earth, the earth, the earth The earth, the earth, the earth Bless God, O my soul! My God, You are great indeed! Robed in majesty and splendor, dressed in sunlight, dappled in moonlight. You spread out the heavens, all of space, like a tent, Your chambers The winds are Your messengers, fire and flame Your ambassadors. R. 4 How varied are Your works, O God.! In wisdom, You made them all. Your Creatures fill the earth. When You hide Your face, all creatures are lost. When You take away our breath, we perish and return to stardust. Send out Your Spirit, O God, and life springs forth. You renew the face of Earth. R. May Your glory endure forever! May You take delight in all You create! We will sing to You all life-long! We will sing praises while we live! May our song be pleasing to You, O God. In You, our hearts rejoice. R. Second Reading Galatians 5:13-14, 16a, 18, 22-24, 26, 25 Voice 2: A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians: You were called to freedom, beloved; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence. Use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law is summed up in one commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. Live by the spirit, I say! If you are led by the Spirit, then you have already fulfilled the law. Its regulations have no hold on you. The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law. Those who belong to Jesus the Christ have crucified all that is selfish and ignorant, all that is not of love. Let us not become arrogant, competing against one another, envying one another. If we live by the Spirit, let us be guided by the Spirit. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Voice 1 & all: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia. Alleluia. Al-le-lu-ia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Al-le-lu-ia. 5 Gospel John 15:26-27 + 20:19-22 Presider: Our God is with you. Voice 1 & All: And also with you. Presider: A Reading from the Gospel attributed to John. Voice 1 & All: Glory to You, O God. Presider: After I depart, the Helper, the Advocate, will come. I will send the Helper to you from our Loving God. She is the Spirit of Truth, proceeding from the mouth of God. She is Wisdom, God’s own words upon God’s very breath. She will testify about me. You will testify also, because you have been with me from the beginning. … On the evening of the first day of the week, the day Jesus was raised, the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the religious authorities.
