MHST SERVICE UPDATE TO SCHOOLS

Dear Education Colleagues, We hope you had a good break over the holidays and the full return to school has been a smooth and successful one following a challenging year. We appreciate the amazing effort that schools have made in supporting the children and young people of during lockdown. Over the last year it has become increasingly apparent, how important it is that we work closely with all schools to make sustainable change to children’s mental health within Portsmouth. This in turn will allow access to the right support at the right time, with an emphasis on early intervention and treatment.

WHOLE CITY MHST OFFER MHST has been offering consultation, training, and intervention to the 32 schools who signed up to MHST in the first wave. Now, with the first 2 teams trainees reaching the end of their training year and recruitment into a 3rd team we are able to begin the next phase of our service development. For the 32 schools currently accessing MHST, this may mean some potential changes to your allocated link workers. We kindly ask for your patience whilst we re-organise the schools into North, Central and South locality teams. Reallocation of some schools to new localities will start April 2021 to allow for a handover period and gentle transition. There will be no change to the referral pathway or treatment offer available. * For the remaining schools and colleges we will be widening the offer to include, we will be making contact over the coming term. However, we also invite you to contact us at your convenience to arrange an initial discussion. During which we can think together about current themes, challenges or areas you would like to develop your wellbeing offer within your school. We can also discuss what MHST currently offer and answer any questions you may have. Our email is [email protected] or you can call 0300 123 5062. We are keen to develop key links and build strong alliances between MHST and schools, we therefore ask that schools consider who might be best placed to link with our service. Where possible, we would like to book in these scoping discussions through May. Once this has taken place, we will be in a position to book your initial clinical consultation sessions at the end of May/Early June. This is in preparation for the final half term of the academic year, when we will open up referrals to ALL schools from 7th June 2021. We ask that prior to making referrals, school’s bring cases to discuss in consultation as per our MHST referral pathway, see below.

*Whilst we will always endeavour for allocated MHST link workers to remain the same, on occasion we may have to reorganise our clinical team to accommodate unforeseen absence or changes within the workforce; this is to ensure parity of offer across our schools, we will always keep you updated with any changes that are likely to impact your school and young people.

 We will work with and support the senior mental health lead in each education setting to introduce or develop their whole school approach.

 We will offer advice and consultation to school staff to build on their skills, enabling them to promote the emotional wellbeing of the young people in their school and develop a Whole School Approach to emotional wellbeing.
