We continue to attract 28 outstanding freshmen each year. In the last ten years, the number of applicants has more than doubled. Webb Institute 2019-20 Annual Report 6 BILL BLANTON WAY

by Anthony R. Zic, Director of Development

William “Bill” Blanton, Jr., P.E. '71 was quite the character, as I learned from his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Blanton Harrison, and others who remember him lovingly. He has been described as quiet but social, a great storyteller, funny, and at times intimidating because of his intellect.

Bill was also a prankster. The neighboring in Glen Cove became the Grace Downs Air Career School, an “academy for young women who like fine adventure and travel plus a salary.” At the time, Bill was courting one of the young women from the Grace Downs Air Career School, as did a number of Webbies. As Webb Social Chair in charge of all of Webb’s mixers, he always found a way to incorporate the Grace Downs students. On one Halloween night, Bill adeptly made it nearly impossible for boarding students to leave on All Saints Day to go to church. Bill at the bow.

AN INTERVIEW WITH WEBB ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, VICKY DLUGOKECKI '88

by Anthony R. Zic, Director of Development

Victoria “Vicky” Dlugokecki '88 was voted in as President of the Webb Alumni Association (WAA) on May 16, 2020. I recently caught up with Vicky on her thoughts about giving back to Webb:

Q: Was philanthropy emphasized during your time that should be given back to the school. And I was as a Webb student? Were you encouraged by the perfectly okay knowing that I could achieve this through administration, faculty, or trustees to engage in this relatively small contributions during my lifetime. context? I’ve been generous with my time as far back as I can I don’t remember philanthropy or the support of the remember. While one might not call it volunteering, I Webb Alumni Fund (WAF) being emphasized while I was had quite a few leadership roles as a teenager, including a student in the mid-1980s. The Heritage Society didn’t editor of my high school newspaper, drum majorette exist and neither did the Webb Every Year (WebbEY) of my high school marching band, and captain of the Program. I also don’t remember anyone receiving swim team. At Webb, I was the Business Manager of the scholarships. I’m pretty sure that Professor Larry Ward, Webb Binnacle for three years, selling advertisements Webb Class of PG'51, was the WAF Chairman at that to support the printing of the publication. That’s when I time—as a student and a recent graduate, I really don’t first met Ed Primeggia, director of Webb’s Development remember a time when Larry Ward wasn’t the WAF Office during my time at Webb, who encouraged giving Chairman. I remember thinking that the Trustees must back to the school. In my early years in New York City, I have been big donors…names like Charles Visconti '55, volunteered as member of the NY Metropolitan Section “Pete” Bethge '53, GP'05, and “Joe” Cuneo '57. And then of SNAME. I’ve rarely missed a SNAME Annual Meeting, there was J. J. Why do WAA President this last May. My Mom always tells me you give your time? that time is money, and that I volunteer too much, but I guess it’s just in my blood. I've always been a “joiner,” I definitely don’t put myself in the same giving category and I guess I’ll always be one. Webb Institute 2019-20 Annual Report 10 Q: How will your role as Webb Alumni Association President impact alumni giving?

When I was first elected as WAA President, someone asked me if I had a “mission” or a “theme” for my presidency. After I gave it some thought, I decided that I wanted my tenure to be associated with the word “Community.” With many of us still hunkered down because of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the social unrest in the U.S., this is really an opportunity for the Webb family to shine. While we were at Webb, many of us built life-long friendships with classmates, and we have grown many more close alumni connections throughout our careers. I will try to use these connections to facilitate a closer connection to the school and to influence financial support of Webb. As WAA President, I now participate on the Communications Committee of the Board of Trustees. I think that my role as WAA President and Trustee will have a positive impact on alumni giving.

Q: What inspired you to establish the Dlugokecki Family Scholarship fund? The Dlugokecki Family in 1992 at Chris' Webb graduation. Sure, I read the Webb News “Heritage Society Spotlights” and browsed through the “Webb Scholarship: accept their offer to attend Webb because they received Making Progress by Getting Closer to 1967” article in “better deals” from other colleges. We all know that Webb last year’s Annual Report, but it wasn’t until I had the provides a full-tuition scholarship, but the cost of room, opportunity to participate in the Board of Trustees’ board, and fees exceeds $18,000 for first-year students. SUSTAINING A WEBB CURRICULUM THROUGH COVID-19

MATTHEW R. WERNER '95, PG'97 Dean & ABS Chair of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

There is a saying that sometimes it’s asked to design a classroom to accommodate COVID-19 requirements, Webb’s Design Studio may well be the better to be lucky than good. blueprint. But COVID-19 did not dictate the original That is what sprang into my mind as I walked into the design of this space; the Design Studios were sized to Sophomore Design Studio for my first lecture of the accommodate up to twenty-eight design stations, a small fall 2020 semester. We twenty-eight students and an instructor. Luck was on our also administered COVID-19 tests to the entire student body, and all students tested negative. From the faculty’s perspective, we started the semester where we ended the last. For the upperclassmen on campus, returning to Webb was the first step toward a return to normalcy.

In the Work Studio, the twenty-six sophomores were seated at their individual workstations, wearing face masks, and separated by six feet in all directions. The large interactive flat-panel monitor was located at the front of the room along with an instructor’s podium, placed six feet from the nearest student desk. The floor- to-ceiling white boards at the front of the room were newly cleaned. The Sound-facing windows were open, as was the door leading out to the external staircase. When speaking to the faculty and students at the beginning of the semester, I noted that the key to this semester’s success would be flexibility. We had no idea what additional requirements would stem from COVID-19, but if we remained flexible, the Webb educational experience would continue as students and faculty worked together. Our flexibility resulted in an unprecedented ability to deliver the Webb curriculum with only 50% in-person instruction, and all students are living and learning on campus. All classes including labs, both in-person and remote, are provided synchronously and continue without interruption. Technology continues to be crucial to the daily delivery and management of the educational program. The lessons we learned in the spring are serving us well in the fall, and we continue to build upon what we have learned. Necessity truly is the mother of invention.

As we have passed the halfway point of the fall semester, the next challenge before us is the upcoming Winter Work period. The decision has been made to go forward with this year’s Winter Work program although COVID-19 has limited internship opportunities. We believe that this program is so valuable and formative for our students that we want to make sure our seniors can take part in their fourth internship experience. For those students whom we cannot place this winter, we intend to make this up in the summer of 2021 so that we remain on schedule.

With continued luck, teamwork, and flexibility, I am confident that the fall semester will finish successfully, and that we will be prepared for whatever the world throws at us when spring classes begin on March 1, 2021. Two things are for certain, the learning will continue, and Zoom is here to stay. Be well and stay safe. Plenty of space in the new Couch Academic Center classrooms.

• Maximizing your current giving levels – The WAF average gift is $2,553 and the median gift is $750. Maybe these are goals you can strive for or comfortably exceed, depending on your circumstances.

• Giving as early in the giving year as possible – This allows everyone involved in this effort to spend more time cultivating alumni that either do not give regularly or have not yet given at all.

• Serving as an ambassador for the WAF and Webb – Help your fellow class agents by encouraging classmates to maximize their giving and to give as early in the giving year as possible. Sharing your giving strategies (monthly giving, gifts of stock, gifts leveraging donor advised funds, charitable distributions from your IRA, matching gifts, etc.) may inspire a new gift or help your peers achieve new giving levels!

Webb Institute 2019-20 Annual Report 28 A MESSAGE FROM THE PLANNED GIVING CHAIR

WEBB HERITAGE SOCIETY WELCOMES FIVE NEW MEMBERS

JOHN MALONE '71 Planned Giving Chair

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly made efforts to grow during the same period: Professor Thomas H. Bond '45, the Heritage Society more challenging in Webb's FY20 Richard G. Eddy '55, and John J. Slager '49. (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020). Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Webb family gatherings were cancelled, The Heritage Society has inched up to a new record high including Regional Events, Homecoming 2020, and the of 161 living members, including a broad cross-section annual Heritage Society Reception and Dinner. Also, of constituencies: 12 alumni trustees, four non-alumni in-person meetings with prospective Heritage Society trustees, 131 alumni (other than current trustees), six members could not be scheduled. And yet, five members honorary alumni, one non-alumni faculty, and seven of the Webb Family responded to our mail, email, and friends. Included in the foregoing categories are three phone outreach and notified the Webb Development parents of alumni, and three members of Webb staff Office that they had taken the steps to include Webb and administration, further demonstrating the breadth Institute in their estate plans. We are pleased and proud of membership in the Heritage Society. Fifty-five Webb to recognize them now: Vincent R. Commisso '18, classes are represented in the Heritage Society, and we Theresa L. Fielding '96, Robert K. Jenner '70, Mark F. are pleased to recognize the top ten classes ranked by the Martecchini '79 (Trustee), and Thomas P. Tindale '10. number of Heritage Society members, and by percentage Sadly, three Heritage Society members passed away of the living members in the class, as follows:

29 Webb Institute 2019-20 Annual Report Very encouraging during FY20 were indications from at least a dozen members of the Webb Family that they intend to join the Heritage Society in the near future, so the rankings on the left page may look quite different in next year's Annual Report! FYI, the rankings for all Webb classes are posted on Webb's website at: https://www.webb.edu/hsranking.

Realized planned gifts in FY20 (i.e., planned gifts that Webb received in FY20, regardless of when the planned gifts were established or pledged) amounted to $777,177. That total came from the estates of seven members of the Heritage Society, including a generous gift from the estate of William J. ("Bill") Blanton '71. Bill served on the Webb Board of Trustees and was instrumental in overseeing the rip-rap replacement of Webb's deteriorating sea wall along Long Island Sound. He passed away in January Table setting from the Heritage Society Dinner in 2019. 2012, and his estate was settled recently, allowing the disbursement of his planned gift. In recognition of his service and contributions to Webb, the Board's Gift The COVID-19 pandemic makes us pause and reflect on Acceptance Committee recommended, and the Board the people, places, and experiences that are important in approved, naming Webb's waterfront path Bill Blanton our lives. With that in mind, we will continue a vigorous Way (see page 7). effort to grow the Heritage Society because planned gifts are not only a way for alumni to "give back" (or "pay We eagerly look forward to seeing new and familiar faces forward") the value of their Webb education, but they are at next year's Heritage Society Reception and Dinner the key for all constituencies of the Webb family to help at the President’s House, scheduled on May 21, 2021. A secure the institution’s financial future and perpetuate record high attendance is likely, given that the Class of William H. Webb's legacy of providing a full-tuition '70 (belatedly celebrating the 50th anniversary of their scholarship for all Webb students. The Webb Heritage graduation from Webb) and the Class of '71 (celebrating Society is certainly a very special group within the Webb their 50th anniversary) will be invited in their entirety. family; its members emulate the generosity of our founder We hope there will be many Heritage Society members and help ensure Webb’s inter-generational sustainability. among them!

We hope to fill these seats at the next Heritage Society Reception in May 2021!

For more information on Webb’s Heritage Society, including information on various planned gifts and how to become a member, please call our Director of Development, Anthony Zic at 516-759-2040 or email him at [email protected]. From the start, Webb has relied upon its endowment, We thank each and every member of the Webb family for initially through funds provided by William H. Webb, your support! and later through the generosity of alumni, family, and friends. The concept is as relevant today as it was in 1889, when William H. Webb established the original endowment. Every unrestricted contribution to Webb's Annual Fund helps ensure the inter-generational sustainability of Webb's full-tuition scholarship model. Beginning in 2017, Webb has also joined a list of only 70 colleges and universities that in addition to full-tuition

35 Webb Institute 2019-20 Annual Report A MESSAGE FROM THE PARENT OF ALUMNI FUND CO-CHAIRS

WEBB FAMILY TRADITION

HAL & ALISON GRANGER P'14 (HON.) Co-Chairs

Continuing recent tradition, the highlight of the Parents of Alumni social calendar was an invitation to join President Michel for breakfast at the President's House on Sunday of Family Weekend, followed by the brilliant Freshman Boat Race. President Michel's annual invitation underscores the solidarity of the Webb community, extending even to parents whose Webb students have become Webb alumni. Embracing William Webb's culture of philanthropy, 126 Webb parents of alumni donated over $126,000 during the 2019-2020 academic year. Among the generous parents of alumni families, 82 earned active WebbEY (Webb Every Year) status by supporting Webb for at least five consecutive years. Thank you!

For the upcoming year, the Parent of Alumni Fund David Dagoon '24 with family on Move-in Day. welcomes Co-Chairs Tom and Jen Waters '89, P'20, who recently served as Co-Chairs of the Parent Annual Fund. We look forward to Tom's and Jen’s contributions, and we thank Webb's parents of alumni for their continuing generosity!
