Christian music in contemporary Africa: a re-examination of its essentials ’Femi Adedeji Department of Music Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Osun State NIGERIA E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract Christian music in contemporary Africa: a re-examination of its essentials Christian music all over Africa (be it liturgical church music or gospel), in contemporary times has become so popular and well grown howbeit in divergent dimensions. As a result, there have been questions, debates and confusions both by insiders and outsiders of the Christian faith on what exactly constitutes Christian music. There then arises the need to theorise the fundamentals of Christian music, exhuming the Biblical, musical and socio-cultural basis for its performance practices. This article examines various principles that should guide contem- porary Christian musicianship, especially as contained in the Scriptures; arguing that the practice of Christian music cannot be divorced from Bible even when the principles of musical sound organisation and the socio-cultural needs of the society have to be observed. The tension created by the superim- position of the three is also resolved. This article is therefore theoretical and prescriptive in focus and depth as it offers to the African audience the paradigms for understanding the art, gives guidance to the practitioners, and supplies scholarly information to the scholars and observers of Christian studies in general. The article concludes by recommending the indispensability of Biblical standards and skilful originality/artistry in contemporary Christian musicianship. Endong, Floribert Patrick Calvain Department of Theatre and Media Studies University of Calabar Calabar-Nigeria [email protected] Abstract The Nigerian gospel music industry has, over the years, become a veritable site of creativity, inventiveness and innovation. This is seen in the remarkable and artful incorporation by contemporary gospel singers, of hitherto forbidden cultural artifacts into their artistic compositions. In line with this, the tendency of incorporating glossolalia (speaking in tongues) in the lyrical text and performance of gospel songs is notable, particularly among popular Pentecostal musicians. This paper explores the structure and artistic values of this spiritual component (glossolalia) in selected pieces by Nigerian Pentecostal singers. It argues that, glossolalia in gospel music composition and performance is more an instrument of song spiritualization than it is an aesthetic feature. This is in line with the fact that the phenomenon primarily helps the artist to assert his Pentecostal identity. From an aesthetical view point, the practice of glossolalia contributes to the “barbarization” of gospel music composition and performance. The practice visibly has potential of distorting the message of songs given the fact that it is typically “esoteric-like”, sacred and secret in nature. Further, glossolalia is in general, largely unintelligible/ meaningless to the majority of audiences who humanly receive the song. Journal of Fine Arts Volume 1, Issue 1, PP 14-22 Rethinking Spiritual/Cultural Appropriation in Christian Music Making and Consumption: A Study of Nigerian Gospel Music Endong, Floribert Patrick Calvain Department of Theatre and Media Studies, University of Calabar, Calabar-Nigeria *Corresponding Authors: Endong, Floribert Patrick Calvain, Department of Theatre and Media Studies, University of Calabar, Calabar-Nigeria ABSTRACT There have been multiple revolutions in the contemporary Christian music and from observable trends, more paradigm shifts are predictable in this music industry. Some of these revolutions and paradigm shifts (notably cultural/spiritual appropriation) have been controversial, somehow driven by human reasoning and aesthetical moves to copy the world. This discourse argues that genuine gospel music making and consumption are Holy Spirit assisted or Spirit-led. As spiritual acts, they are spiritually discerned, exclusively by observers “possessed” by the True Holy Spirit. This is in line with the biblical illumination that spirituality is spiritually discerned by spiritual people (2 Corinthians 1:12). Based on this premise, the article castigates the cultural appropriation paradigm in gospel music industry, equating it to the product of human philosophy. Though culturally sensitive, the appropriation tradition tends to offer religion and religious art in a secular mode with the risk of causing gospel artists to adapt to purely secular standards. In tandem with this, secularism – in multiple forms – has crept into and been firmly entrenched in the church, thanks partly to the ingenious or careless attitudes of many church leaders. This secularism is reflected not only in the conduct of some important churches’ affairs and spiritual programs; but equally in most communications (including gospel music) by Nigeria based religious bodies or Christians. This paper identifies the importation of (questionable) traditions – such as worldly rhythms, materialism, the avid search for fame and earthly glories as well as other controversially aggressive musical cultures – as the major indexes of secularism in the Nigerian gospel music. It argues that these phenomena somehow indicate that contemporary Christianity in Nigeria is no longer sufficiently equipped to fruitfully function as a credible censorial force. The Church has intrinsically – though inadvertently – facilitated spiritual bareness by lending support to impure music enterprises in the form of consumption, promotion and mass distribution of contaminated gospel music. The paper recommends that true Christians seek to be spiritually equipped with the TRUE Holy Spirit to be able to effectively discern and sort secularism from spirituality in gospel music; and regulate their consumption of the genre. -

This paper attempts to examine the work of Pentecostalism and its exerted influences on the musical practices in the churches in regards to techniques, mood, rhythm, harmony, text, melodies, form, and mode of presentation in church worship. It reviews the hallmarks of Pentecostalism by elucidating aptly on the etymology, history and background and beliefs of Pentecostal movement in the worldview and Nigeria in particular. Materials used in this work are mostly from religious and related music literatures. Using the historical research design, the study discovered that the movement has influenced the spiritual and musical perception of the people to a more contemporary style of praise and worship music rather than hymn singing alone. In light of the findings, the appraisal of the Pentecostal movement is recommended in order to maintain the age long tradition and philosophy of Pentecostalism. HSS V.2 (2016) DOI: 10.1515/hssr -2016-0017 Religiosity versus Spirituality in the Contemporary Nigerian Gospel Music Floribert Patrick Calvain Endong* University of Calabar, Nigeria Abstract There have been remarkable (r)evolutions in the Nigerian gospel music industry for the past decades. These revolutions have led to the emergence and survival of various modern and controversial musical cultures/traditions, modes and performances including worldliness and paganism in the industry. In view of these relatively nefarious musical cultures, a good number of scholars and observers tend to arguably redefine and (re)brand Christian communication in general and Nigerian gospel music in particular. It is in following this premise that this paper examines the phenomenon of religiosity and worldliness in the Nigerian gospel music industry. Based on observations and secondary data (literary sources), the paper argues that the Nigerian gospel music industry is just a vivid reflection of the country’s gloomy socio-religious landscape, characterized by the emergence/prevalence of fake ministers and various ubiquitous instrumentalities that perpetrate spiritual bareness in the country. Aspects of religiosity observed in some Nigerian gospel songs include controversial rhythms, imitations/adaptations of worldly songs, lyrical emphasis on prosperity (materialism, fame and earthly glories) at the detriment of spirituality/salvation, gospel artists being associated with sex scandals and occult practices. ABSTRACT Metal music is a highly misunderstood style of music that is dismissed and demonized all over the world; even in the US and Europe where it originated it is still vilified and viewed as an unsophisticated style of music. In the Islamic Republic of Iran the same views are amplified to the extreme as a very foreign and Western style of music is growing in popularity. I explored the history of metal music to show where this genre originated so a better understanding of this music could be attained. Through an understanding of the genre it is much easier to understand how this music has spread across the globe like a wild fire and people in third world and oppressed nations are being inspired and motivated to become musicians and stand up for themselves and their beliefs.
