"Plants for Coastal Gardens" Randy Baldwin San Marcos Growers We are often asked which plants tolerate coastal conditions. To this end San Marcos Growers created a display of seaside tolerant plants at the 1998 Santa Barbara Fair and Expo and added a search utility within our website to display this data. We feel however that this limited the information to only the plants we grow and did not adequately categorize the plants as to what zone (proximity to ocean) or severity of conditions they would tolerate. The following list is more complete and sorted for many of the zones that would be found in our coastal areas. This same topic has been dealt with in many references and this list borrows from them. It is intended to serve as a reference for our customers to help them choose appropriate plants for our coastal gardens. I am hoping that this list will remain dynamic, with further refinements and additions. If anyone notes a plant that is missing or has contrary information from what is on this list, I would appreciate hearing about it. This list was compiled from sources that categorize plants or zones of coastal influence differently. This makes a compilation into one general list nearly impossible. I have instead sorted the list first by the reference source, then by zone and last by the type of plant. For the listings from Hoyt's "Check Lists for Ornamental Plants of Subtropical Region” - Coastal Planting List" I have included his reliability rating as H1 (greatest) through H3 (least) The following reference sources were used: Chandler, Phillip E.
