John Bradshaw (author) - Wikipedia John Elliot Bradshaw June 29, — May 8, was an American educatorcounselormotivational speakerand author who hosted a number of PBS television programs on topics such as addictionrecovery, codependencyand spirituality. Bradshaw was active in the self-help movement, and was credited with popularizing such ideas as the "wounded inner child " and the dysfunctional family. Bradshaw was the author of six books, several of which held top slots as New York Times bestsellers ; his book Homecoming reached No. During the s and s he hosted a number of PBS television broadcasts based on his books. Bradshaw was born in HoustonTexasinto a troubled family and abandoned by an alcoholic father who himself was also abandoned by his own father. Bradshaw won scholarships to study for the Roman Catholic priesthood. He earned a B. Six years after his graduation, Bradshaw returned to academia at Rice University in Houston, Texasdoing three years of graduate work in psychology and religion. Bradshaw said alcohol addiction and other problems led to his decision to end his plans for the priesthood. Throughout the s, John Bradshaw served as a management consultant at Drillco Manufacturing Company and as a leadership trainer at Denka Chemical Company. He presented lectures and workshops for educational, professional and social organizations starting in He served as: member, board of directors and as president of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program —88 ; national director of Life-Plus Co-Dependency Treatment Center — ; founder and national director of the John Bradshaw Center at Ingleside Hospital in Los Angeles — ; and member, national board of The Family: A New Way of Creating Solid Self-esteem of The International Montessori Society — He was an honorary lifetime board member of the Council on Alcohol and Drugs in Houston. Starting inBradshaw was also a senior fellow at The Meadows Institute. The facility's intensive treatment focuses on drug and alcohol addiction, sexual addictions, depression, eating disorders, psychological conditions, affective disorders and compulsive behaviors. It takes a holistic approach to addiction recovery and includes a wide variety of therapeutic approaches, including the Twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bradshaw appeared on OprahGeraldoSallyDr. Bradshaw was the author of six books, three of which are New York Times Best Sellers, and he sold over 10 million copies and was published in 42 languages. Bradshaw resided in the Shadyside subdivision of Houston, Texas, with his wife, Karen, an artist, and daughter, Ariel Bradshaw.     Appendix A: Memory Myths and Realities Myth 1. You must identify the root cause of your unhappiness from the past in order to heal and be happy in the present. Reality 1. It is unfortunately the normal human lot to be frustrated and unhappy at various points in your life. There is no magic pill to make you happy, and your attitude in the present is much more the issue than anything that happened to you in the past. Myth 2. Checklists of “symptoms” are reliable tools to identify disorders. Reality 2. Beware of symptom checklists, particularly if they apply to nearly everyone in the general population. At one time or another, most people experience depres- sion, troubled relationships, ambivalence toward family members, and low self- esteem. These are not necessarily “symptoms” of anything other than the human condition. Myth 3. You can trust any therapist who seems compassionate, warm, wise, and caring. You do not need to ask about credentials, experience, training, philosophy, treat- ment approach, or techniques. Reality 3. Just because a therapist is warm and caring does not mean that he or she is com- petent or can help you. Training, philosophy, and treatment modalities are extremely important. Therapists who dwell unceasingly on your past are unlikely to help you cope with your present-day problems. Building on partnerships begun in 2017, HERC now includes 10 school districts, including Aldine, Alief and Katy, to continue to bring research and practice together for the benefit of all children.
