International Superstar Shakira performs “Did It Again” from her forthcoming album, “She Wolf.” Shakira also takes to the “Dancing with the Stars” stage with her hit “Hips Don’t Lie” from her second English-language album, “Oral Fixation Volume 2,” released in 2006. Shakira has won two Grammy Awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards and has been nominated for a Golden Globe. In addition she is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, and the second-most successful female Latin singer, having sold over 50 million albums worldwide. In a special professional dancer routine, pros Cheryl Burke, Dmitry Chaplin, Alec Mazo, Edyta Sliwinska, Karina Smirnoff and Louis Van Amstel preview and showcase next week’s dances, the Argentine Tango and Paso Doble, together in one performance on the “Dancing with the Stars” stage. By evening’s end one couple will be eliminated, as determined by a combination of the judges’ scores and viewers’ votes. With huge spaceships simultaneously appearing over 29 cities around the world, the Visitors (or V’s) seem to promote a message of peace. Through their generous offer to share advanced technology, the V’s quickly build a following that may be overlooking a more malevolent agenda. The premiere of “V,” from Warner Bros. Television, airs TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on ABC. In the premiere episode, “Pilot,” an image of Anna (Morena Baccarin), the leader of the V’s, is projected worldwide as she speaks about everyone joining together and no longer being divided by country or separated by fear. She wants us all to unite, and is counting on a very important component of human nature -- devotion. At first considered a threat, the V’s quickly become a fascination and a link to things that lay just beyond our reach. For Tyler (Logan Huffman), a teenaged boy, the V’s are his ticket to being a part of something big and something that offers hope. To Chad (Scott Wolf), an egotistical news anchor who wants to further his career, his exclusive interview with Anna begins his desire to dominate the airwaves. Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a priest with questioning faith, is hesitant to believe in the Visitors’ righteousness and goes outside of the church in search of the truth. There are other dissidents who believe the Visitors aren’t who they say they are, including Ryan (Morris Chestnut), who is faced with a life-altering decision when the V’s show up. And to FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), who discovers, while investigating a terrorist cell, what lurks beneath the alarmingly human exterior of the Visitors, resisting this new world has never been more important -- and never has there been more at stake. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform.     Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake Taylor Boulware A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Thomas Foster, Chair Anis Bawarshi Katherine Cummings Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake by Taylor Boulware The University of Washington, 2017 Under the Supervision of Professor Dr. Thomas Foster ABSTRACT This dissertation examines contemporary television slash fandom, in which fans write and circulate creative texts that dramatize non-canonical queer relationships between canonically heterosexual male characters. These texts contribute to the creation of global networks of affective and social relations, critique the specific corporate media texts from which they emerge, and undermine homophobic ideologies that prevent authentic queer representation in mainstream media. Intervening in dominant scholarly and popular arguments about slash fans, I maintain a rigorous distinction between the act of reading homoerotic subtexts in TV shows and writing fiction that makes that homoeroticism explicit, in every sense of the word.This emphasis on writing and the circulation of responsive, recursive texts can best be understood, I argue, through the framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies, which theorizes genres and the ways in which they are deployed, modified, and circulated as ideological and social action. I nuance the RGS concept of uptake, which names the generic dimensions of utterance and response, and define my concept of queer uptake, in which writers respond to a text in ways that refuse its generic boundaries and status, motivated by an ideological resistance to both genre and sexual normativity.

Denney Department of Communications Master of Arts This thesis attempts to better understand gender roles portrayed in the media. By using Stuart Hall‟s theory of audience reception (Hall, 1980) the researcher looks into dance and gender in the media to indicate whether or not LDS participants believe stereotypical gender roles are portrayed on “Dancing with the Stars.” Through four focus groups containing a total of 30 participants, the researcher analyzed costuming, choreography, and judges‟ comments through the viewer‟s eyes.

As the rest, the recent blaze is attributed to incendiaries, perhaps irresponsible boys or persons having a grudge against the school management of the township. The two other buildings, Mt. Schuyler All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don’t shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn’t add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them “different,” “othered” or “marginalized.” Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disperate examples of this phenomenon.

Her first step was to survey paraplegic rid- ers to find out what they needed the most. Then she created a hoist that can lift a saddle onto a horse. Other obstacles paraplegic riders may face when getting ready to ride a horse are already taken care of with wheelchair ramps and lifts to place them on the animals. However, with- out Burris’ hoist, these riders need someone else to maneuver the saddles for them. “Knowing this population and knowing some of the struggles that they go through try- ing to tack up their own horse and how benefi- cial riding is to them, I wanted to figure out a way to make it more accessible and help them be more independent,” Burris said. Burris is a non-traditional student. She has worked in health care for many years and was inspired by the many lifts used to move pa- tients. Her research and the hoist were presented at a symposium at the University of Califor- nia-Berkeley this past summer.
