I’ve lost my temper over something twice in the last two weeks. That’s usually a pretty good indicator that something is bothering me more than I’ve been giving in credit for, which means: 1) I need to apologize to those whom I have offended by losing my tem- per; and 2) I need to address this with the parish.

We have a wonderful tradition of hospitality here at Christ the King, something I genuinely treasure and for which I’m truly grateful. It’s good to be able to welcome people with a handshake and a smile as they enter our space, to make them feel wel- come and help them find where they fit. I want to take this opportunity to personally thank all of our Host Ministers and those who assist them in this very important work.

That said, one unintended consequence of our enthusiastic hospitality can be to make the church itself a less prayerful space.

Acoustics are already a problem in the sanctuary (an MC whispers an instruction to an altar server and an usher all the way on the north side can now tell the kid what to do), but when the conversation moves from the narthex into the nave (the breezeway to where the pews are), then the quiet which is proper to the church itself is easily lost and this can make it hard for those trying to prepare for the next Mass.

This is especially true when there are events happening in the Parish Hall either at the same time as Mass is going on (which we try to keep at a minimum), or when people are in there setting up for an event to follow. That sliding wall, which allows for over-

flow seating and a cry area more easily attached to the church proper does not mute sound very well, and if you’re speaking at anything above an ordinary, conversational tone it will carry into the Church. As I said at one Mass this week, “If it’s loud enough for Father to hear at the altar, it’s too loud.” And that was with the wall closed.

The bottom line is this: Mass is the most important thing that we do. If we’re doing something at Church which is prevent- ing me from attending Mass or distracting someone else from Mass, then we need to find something else to do. Practically this means that as Masses overlap with Coffee and Donuts on the weekend we may need to move tables to avoid our conversation spilling over into the Church, and it means we all need to watch our volume as we enter and leave, so that the church itself can be what it is called—an oratory—that is, a house of prayer.

I am not saying I want a bunch of pious grumps at Mass. Nor am I saying it is never appropriate to speak in a regular voice in the church proper, but out of respect for both the Blessed Sacrament which is reserved there, and my neighbor who is often praying there, we all need to do our best to keep our fellowship where it belongs—in the hall—and our prayer where it belongs—in the

Church.

And I promise to work on my temper. You can give beyond your life through a bequest to Christ the King Church/School in your will.

Second, The Mission of Love assumes that couples are (probably) living together since most couples preparing for marriage today are already cohabitating. This should not be construed as condoning the practice of cohabitation. The authors present a completely Catholic view of marriage which is both honest and respectful and conveys the truth with love. Ironically, it may be the way the authors speak to couples who have the experience of living together that makes The Mission of Love also beneficial for married couples who wish to strengthen their relationship. Engaged and married couples will discover the tools to build happy, healthy, life- long and God-centered marriages.

In short, The Mission of Love: A Sacramental Journey to Marital Success is unique, easy-to-read, and beneficial for couples preparing for marriage AND for married couples wanting to strengthen their relationship.

For the sake of full disclosure, there is an additional reason we recommend The Mission of Love. Did you recognize the book’s second author? That’s right — it’s our very own pastor, Fr. PJ McManus! (Next time you see him you might ask for his autograph :)
