1. Age-standardised rates per 100,000 population, standardised to the 2013 European Standard Population (ESP). Age- standardised rates are used to allow comparison between populations which may contain different proportions of people of different ages. For more information on ESP, see the ONS website: www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/user-guidance/health- and-life-events/revised-european-standard-population-2013--2013-esp-/index.html 2. Underlying cause of death was defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes C00 to C97 for the period 2001 to 2013 3. Figures are based on deaths registered, rather than deaths occurring in the years 2004 to 2013. Further information on registration delays for a range of causes can be found on the ONS website: www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/user- guidance/health-and-life-events/impact-of-registration-delays-on-mortality-statistics/index.html. 4. Figures exclude deaths of non-residents 5. Figures are based on boundaries as of August 2014

The number of deaths registered in and Wales each year by sex, age, cause, marital status, and place of death are published annually on the National Statistics website at: www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/mortality-statistics--deaths-registered-in-england-and-wales--series-dr- /index.html
