Legacy Finding Aid for Manuscript and Photograph Collections

801 K Street NW Washington, D.C. 20001

What are Finding Aids?

Finding aids are narrative guides to archival collections created by the repository to describe the contents of the material. They often provide much more detailed information than can be found in individual catalog records. Contents of finding aids often include short biographies or histories, processing notes, information about the size, scope, and material types included in the collection, guidance on how to navigate the collection, and an index to box and folder contents.

What are Legacy Finding Aids?

The following document is a legacy finding aid – a guide which has not been updated recently. Information may be outdated, such as the Historical Society’s contact information or exact box numbers for contents’ location within the collection. Legacy finding aids are a product of their times; language and terms may not reflect the Historical Society’s commitment to culturally sensitive and anti-racist language. This guide is provided in “as is” condition for immediate use by the public. This file will be replaced with an updated version when available.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FINDING AID

Title: SP 0006 Gordon B. Bradley Photograph Collection, 1890s-1950 (1918-1950)

Processor: Jack Brewer

Gordon B. Bradley (1883-1958) was born on February 3, 1883, in Michigantown, Indiana. While he was still a small child, the family moved to Texas. At about seven years of age, he had the opportunity to work for Mathew Brady as a “camera monkey,” climbing into large cameras in order to change the diaphragm settings. It was probably this early experience that stimulated Bradley’s interest in photography.

As a young man, Bradley traveled a lot. He was acquainted with Annie Oakley and with Buffalo Bill, who taught him rifle and pistol shooting, and for a time even traveled with Buffalo Bill’s circus.

Bradley probably began his career as a professional photographer in Asheville, North Carolina around 1900. He work in Richmond, Virginia during the first decade of the twentieth century, and had arrived in Washington, D.C. by 1916. Sometime between 1916 and 1920, he married Rena Lundell. Their only child, Robert, was born in March 1921 in Cadillac, Michigan.

Bradley’s Washington, D.C. photography business went through several name and location changes during its thirty-year history. The Photocraft Shop was located at 501 ½ 14th Street, NW from around 1921 to about 1927. About 1928, Bradley moved the business to 618 12th Street (12th and Westside) and changed its name to The Photocraft Studio. Yet another name change, to The Photocraft Service, accompanied the move to 1512 L Street, NW, where the shop was located from about 1932 to about 1937. This name was retained through the final move, probably in the late 1930s, to 1621 K Street, NW.

As part of his business, Bradley took and developed photographs, and apparently also did his own printing typesetting, picture framing and engraving. Robert frequently worked for his father during the summer months and Rena may have helped out by doing some hand-coloring of photographs.

Between 1916 and 1929, Bradley’s residence changed several times, but from about 1929 to 1949, the family lived at 4120 18th Street, NW. After selling his photography business in 1949, Bradley lived for a short time at 1420 New York Avenue before retiring to Clearwater, Florida. He also tried his hand at selling real estate in California before ill health necessitated his return to the D.C. area. Gordon Bradley died at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, on October 20, 1958.

Scope and Content: The Gordon B. Bradley Photograph Collection, 1890s-1950 (1918- 1950), consists of thousands of photographic prints and negatives, slides, and glass plates. The photographs in the collection are mainly of Washington, D.C. and vicinity, and include many views of buildings, monuments, and parks. Other subjects include aircraft, boats, bridges, parades, people, and streets. An alphabetical list by subject with corresponding print number follows. Many of the numbers include multiple prints and negatives. Glass plate negatives appear to have been collected by Bradley. Notations on some of the original negative sleeves indicate that the photographer may have been a W.A. King and the images may date to the 1890s. All of the glass plates have been cataloged individually as BR 205 – BR 233 and include scanned images. Printouts of those scans are included in the collection. In addition, the collection includes about 100 35 mm slides of Washington, D.C. subjects and Bradley family photos.

Donor: Robert B. Bradley (son of photographer), 1985.046

Size: 1.2 cubic ft. (excluding glass plate negatives)
