Hutchins, DVM T VIEWS Dimethyl sulfoxide is an oxidation product of dimethyl sulfide. Di methyl sulfoxide (DMSO} is a colorless liquid with a weak odor which leaves a bitter taste in the mouth shortly after its administration by any route. Chemically DMSO is unusual in that it mixes well with both water and fat soluble compounds; and these chemical characteristics enable it to penetrate rapidly through cell membranes. DMSO also accelerates the movement of other substances through cell membranes and is thus useful in increasing the transcutaneous absorption of drugs. DMSO also has marked anti-inflammatory effects (reduces swelling), local anesthetic properties (kills pain}, and anti-bacterial effects (treats infection). When adde~ to water, DM?O is very hygroscopic (water soluble), therefore much heat 1s released. Th1s may cause some discomfort to the animal when high concentrations of DMSO are applied topically. DMSO appears to markedly accelerate the absorption of other drugs, in some cases up to 100 times. In the case of leg paints it is mixed with iodine and steroids to increase their effect. When mixed with turacin or other anti biotics it appears to make an excellent topical wound dressing. Most people mix DMSO in half, that is half DMSO and half iodine or whatever the other VETERINARY CENTER OPEN ingredient. One-third DMSO is generally sufficient and will be as effective. Johnson, Director of Publicity

Evergreen Heel, a classy gelded-son of Chipman's Heel, has easily captured the "Horse of the Year" honors at the all-new Scarborough Downs winter harness racing session. A lifetime purse-winner of over $207,000, "The Heel" JAN. :101981 ACE l1lO! . · · has turned in a perfect ''five for five" record at the Downs, while racing in lo, ----.4.. v _____...... ___,_ - - -- ~ '.,._. the top-class conditioned events for trainer-driver Jim Apperti, Jr. Owned by the partnership of Leon, Robert, Thomas, and John Graham, Evergreen Heel burst on the local scene with an impressive 2:08.2 Qualify ing mile in early December. He followed that up with a leisurely 2:11.2 victory on December 14th, and then came back with the winter-seasons fastest clocking, a mile in 2:06.3 in mid-December. Being lightly raced since that time, he has posted wins in 2:06.4 and 2:07.1, with his most recent start resulting in a 2:09.4 score on January 10th. "The Heel" will be shipping to Liberty Bell Park in Philadelphia at the end of the current meeting, taking with him lifetime-earnings of $208,000. along with an impressive lifetime mark of 1 :59, taken as a six-year old over • a half-mile oval. Other top contenders for the coveted "Horse of the Year" honors were Adios Mick, a speedy son of Adios Vic who also provided a quick 2:06.3 victory, along with a winter record of three wins, one second, and one third, in six trips behind the starting gate, Granite Ridge, a game son of Coral Ridge, who became a · Feature Race-pacer once Paul Battis got the driving assignment, and Promise Gander, who raced his way from the $800 claiming level, all the way up to the $2,000 level, winning at every stop along the way for owner-trainer-driver Walter Case, Jr. of Lewiston and claimed late in the season by Connie Bonetti of Milford, Mass. Among the trotting colony the top performers were Freedom Deal and Auntie Teen, who shared the fastest clockings with victories in 2:08.2. Right behind the top two as Rummy Jane, another "Apperti entry" who posted two wins, one second, and one third, her fastest in 2:08.3. Other consistent performers who certainly rate a word or two for their game and constant efforts during the cruel winter of 1980-81 include Mich evan, Hezzie Song, Bet U Win, Namahana, Primetta, Sir Bruce Dunloe, Scotty's Kiwi, Mount Blue, Bus Driver, Kingswood Hanover, On Time Gal, True Special, Poquita, and Serenity Jane. And yet, all alone at the top of the standings, is the outstanding Ever green Heel, as fine a pacer as we have seen perform along the Pine Tree Cur- ·---.. ~,·~-~~.-.--,-., ... ~~ cui in many seasons. He may have been only a $6,000-claimer at Foxboro last year, but he became something very special during the most trying of This photo finish of Evergreen Heel winning indicates the competitiveness in . conditions at Scarborough Downs this winter I the Preferred Division during the winter meet at Scarborough Downs this year.
