Using an Algorithm Portfolio to Solve Sokoban Nils Froleyks Bachelor thesis Using an Algorithm Portfolio to Solve Sokoban Nils Froleyks Date: December 28, 2016 Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Peter Sanders Dr. Tomáš Balyo Institute of Theoretical Informatics, Algorithmics Department of Informatics Karlsruhe Institute of Technology Abstract The game of Sokoban is an interesting platform for algorithm research. It is hard for humans and computers alike. Even with its simple rules and small average level sizes there are levels that take a lot of computation for all known algorithms. In this thesis we will combine different Sokoban solvers with different domain specific enhancements into one portfolio. This portfolio can then be run in parallel on one problem until one solver finds a solution. Additionally the solvers in the portfolio can exchange data to speed up computation. We will validate the approach of algorithm portfolios for designing a parallel Sokoban solver. Acknowledgments First of all I want to thank my supervisors Prof. Peter Sanders and Dr. Tomáš Balyo. With the latter I had a lot of interesting conversations about Sokoban and strategies to solve it. I also want to thank the people who worked with me in the institute during the time of my bachelor thesis. They always provided a friendly working environment and advice when needed. Last I want to thank Matthias Meger, the creator of JSoko, for his implementation of the game. Having something nice to look at, helps when thinking about problems. I also used JSoko to create some of my graphics. It was first proven to be NP- hard [6] and then PSPACE-complete [4]. While the rules are simple, even small levels can require a lot of computation to be solved. To reduce the computation time, parallelization seems necessary. Due to the uneven search space distribution it is hard to parallelize the exploration of a branch and bound tree. As an alternative to traditional parallelization approaches this work focuses on algorithm portfolios – a parallelization concept in which each processor solves the whole problem instance, using a different algorithm, random seed or other kind of diversification. 1.2 Contribution We describe how a search based Sokoban solver can be structured and which algorithms can be used to realize each critical part. We implement a variety of those and construct a number of different solvers. We test the solvers against each other and combine them into a portfolio to evaluate its performance. 1.3 Structure of the Thesis In section 2 we will present the game of Sokoban and introduce the notation and necessary definitions this thesis will be using. Additionally we will introduce the concept of algo- rithm portfolios and present a number of basic algorithms. In section 3 we will review the previous work on Sokoban solvers and the game itself. After that we will present our solver in section 4. In section 5 we will evaluate the results of our experiments and validate the portfolio approach to solving Sokoban. Finally, we will conclude this work in section 6 and give some ideas for future work on the topic. 1 1 Introduction 2 2 Preliminary 2.1 Graphs A graph G = (V; E) is a tuple of vertices V and edges E ⊆ V × V . Two general types of graphs can be distinguished: directed and undirected graphs. A graph is undirected if 8x; y 2 V :(x; y) 2 E ) (y; x) 2 E and directed otherwise. A graph is weighted if a cost function c : E ! R is defined. A vertex y is called a successor of x if (x; y) 2 E. The number of successors a vertex has is called its degree: d(x) = jf(x; y) 2 Egj A finite list of distinctive vertices p is a path of length n, if for every vertex in the list there is an edge connecting it to the one following it: p = v0; :::; vn with 8i < n :(vi; vi+1) 2 E 2.1.1 Bipartite Graphs A graph is bipartite if the vertices of the graph can be divided into two disjunct sets so that no edges connect two vertices in the same set: A; B ⊆ V; A \ B = ;;A [ B = V; 8(x; y) 2 E : x 2 A; y 2 B _ y 2 A; x 2 B 2.1.2 Matching A matching is a subset of pairwise non-adjacent edges, i.e. no two edges in the matching share a vertex. A vertex is called matched if it is the endpoint of one edge in the matching. jV j A matching M of a graph G = (V; E) is perfect if jMj = 2 If G is weighted, a perfect matching M is minimal if c(M) := P c(e) is minimal among e2M all perfect matchings. 3 2 Preliminary 2.2 Sokoban Sokoban is a puzzle game that originated in Japan. It was invented by Hiroyuki Imabayashi, and published in 1982 by Thinking Rabbit, as a PC game.1 The word Sokoban is Japanese for warehouse keeper. Each level represents a warehouse, where boxes are randomly placed. A warehouse keeper has to push the boxes around the warehouse so that all boxes are on goals at the end of the game. 2.2.1 Rules Each level consists of a two dimensional rectangular grid of squares that make up the "warehouse". The squares are indexed starting from the top left with (0; 0). If a square Figure 2.1: Level with the index of each square given. This graphic was created using JSoko http://www.sokoban-online.de/jsoko.html . contains nothing it is called a floor. Otherwise it is occupied by one of the following entities: (a) Wall (b) Box (c) Goal (d) Player Figure 2.2: Entities of Sokoban (a) Walls make up the basic outline of each level. They cannot be moved and nothing else can be on a square occupied by a wall. A legal level is always surrounded by walls. 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokoban (10.11.2016) 4 2.2 Sokoban (b) A box can either occupy a goal or an otherwise empty square. They can be moved in the four cardinal directions by pushing. A push is defined by a start position and a direction. The start position is given by a tuple of indices (x; y). The direction can be either up, down, left or right. As figured below let us suppose the direction to be right. For a push to be legal the following conditions must be met: • A box is at position (x; y). • The player can reach the position (x − 1; y). • Position (x + 1; y) is either floor or a goal. After executing the push the box is located at position (x + 1; y) and the player at position (x; y). Figure 2.3: A push to the right (c) Goals are treated like floors for the most part. Only when each goal is occupied by a box the game is completed. In a legal level the number of goals matches the number of boxes. For the sake of simplicity, we will call a square that is either a goal or a floor square free since the player and boxes can enter both.

  • Play Any PC Game with a Gamepad Using Joytokey for Those Who Prefer Controllers to Keyboards
Play Any PC Game with a Gamepad Using JoyToKey For those who prefer controllers to keyboards There was a time when “hardcore” PC gamers would look down on the idea of using a gamepad to play PC games. The mouse and keyboard reigned supreme, especially in the golden age of first person shooters. The truth is that joysticks and gamepads have a rich and storied history on the PC, with genres such as racing and flight simulation virtually requiring it to be playable. The problem is that, for a very long time, gamepads on PC were not really standardized. Without a solid idea of what players would be using, many developers simply didn’t bother developing gamepad support for their titles. Now, largely thanks to console ports, the Xbox controller has become the de facto standard for PC gaming too. Better yet, since so many games are also developed for the Xbox, it’s easy for developers to simply include the control scheme. The end result is that if you hook up an Xbox controller to a modern Windows PC, modern games will seamlessly switch over, even changing the in-game UI to reflect gamepad controls. This is the best of time for those of us who love to game with a gamepad on PC, especially from a couch. However, there are thousands of older PC games that only support a keyboard and mouse. Which leaves us with a bit of an issue. Luckily JoyToKey provides an affordable solution. How To Use JoyToKey JoyToKey is a small application sold for a few dollars that takes gamepad input and converts it to mouse and keyboard output.

  • The Politics of Asobigokoro in Enzai Falsely Accused
Playing with Pain: The Politics of Asobigokoro in Enzai Falsely Accused Playing with Pain: The Politics of Asobigokoro in Enzai Falsely Accused Tsugumi Okabe and Jérémie Pelletier-Gagnon Abstract The genre of boys’ love (BL), which generally refers to a body of works that depict fictional relationships between beautiful “boys,” is produced for and consumed mainly by women in Japan. Ludic expressions of sexuality and gender unique to BL have gained popularity on a global scale but have also drawn negative attention. In this article, we employ the concept of asobigokoro (playful spirit/heart) to highlight the importance of regional ideas of play and playfulness in game analysis. We argue that asobigokoro functions as a kind of counter-discourse as it privileges non- Eurocentric ways of knowing, understanding, and “playing” with representations of sexuality. Game analysis through an asobigokoro lens enriches the field of regional gaming by drawing on Japanese sociopolitical contexts to situate a reading of Japanese ludic representations. Asobigokoro stresses the importance of understanding cultural variations of “play” and “playfulness” in order to make sense of “taboo” subjects in culturally nuanced ways. In our textual analysis of Enzai: Falsely Accused, we discover that the simultaneous appropriation and subversion of violent and sexually explicit content, which characterizes the game’s asobigokoro, can be traced to Japanese feminist forms of asobi (play), which are rooted within the Yaoi tradition. 1. Introduction Among the various efforts to promote greater rights for women in Japan, in February 2016, the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) made a plea for banning “the sale of video games or cartoons involving rape and sexual violence against girls and women.” According to CEDAW, “stereotypes continue to be the root causes of sexual violence against women, and pornography, video games and animation products such as manga promote sexual violence against women and girls” (UN CEDAW 2016, 5, item 20b).

GAME MASTERS Edited by Emma McRae Masanobu Endō joined Namco in 1981 and his first game,Xevious (1982), became a Masanobu massive hit in Japan. Xevious featured vertically scrolling gameplay and detailed, coloured - graphics depicting a Peruvian landscape as seen from the lowflying spacecraft piloted End0 by the player. Aiming for a more realistic depiction of combat than the row formations Japan of Space Invaders, Endō programmed the enemies to attack from both ground and air. In addition, the game reacts to the skills of the player, moving seamlessly through 16 levels of difficulty. Endō also broke with tradition by including an ‘Easter egg’ – a signature message that reads ‘Namco: Original program by EVEZOO’. Endō also designed Tower of Druaga (1984), a complex 60level maze game comprising the first episode of Babylonian Castle Saga. In 1985 Endō left Namco to establish his own company, Game Studio, where he continued to collaborate with Namco, producing the Family Circuit racing series. - Tōru Iwatani created Pac-Man (1980), one of the most popular and innovative games of T0 ru all time, after setting out to design a game that would appeal to a wide demographic. He settled on the concept of eating, bypassing the usual sporting or apocalyptic themes. Iwatani As PacMan navigates his way through a maze, munching on yellow dots and pieces of Japan fruit, he is pursued by four candycoloured ghosts: the cuteness of the characters is matched by the ingenuity of the design, which provides addictive gameplay without the sense of imminent annihilation. Pac-Man is credited with being the first game to feature powerups, cutscenes and even the concept of stealth play.
