THE CITIZENS POST FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good Afternoon All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division One South fixture between Winchester City FC and Cirencester Town FC. We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters that have made the journey from the West Country and we hope you enjoy your afternoon with us and have a safe journey home. City are six games unbeaten going into today’s fixture, including wins over Mangotsfield United, Blackfield & Langley, Bashley and Paulton Rovers along with draws against Cinderford Town and Thatcham Town. The Bashley victory was significant as it booked us a place in the semi-finals of the Southampton Senior Cup, where we will face AFC Stoneham in a tie that will be played at Hamble Club, kicking off at 19:30 on Tuesday 5th March 2019 – so please come on down and show your support. Today’s opponents will be a good test for us, with both sides having already beaten each other once this season. Please get behind the team! #youcitizens

THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for this afternoons exciting league encounter, visiting us are a very good Cirencester Town side, Charlie Griffin their manager is a really good lad and has done a good job there, they are sat in the play offs currently and have some very good players, we beat them memorably in the FA cup match earlier in the season, they exacted revenge on us in the league a couple of weeks later and so we will see what today brings, what we do know though is it will be a tough game and I look forward to the challenge. I wish their players, staff and supporters a pleasant stay and safe trip home afterwards.

Last weekend for us was a good one, to beat one of our bogey sides Paulton Rovers away from home 1-0 is great, they have some dangerous players and always tough to beat at their ground, in truth we controlled the game from start to finish and got a very well deserved 1-0 win thanks to Simba Mlambo excellent finish! Only sour note a booking to Joe Cook which leaves him suspended for 2 games after accumulative bookings, he has been excellent and we will miss him. We are unbeaten so far in 2019 and let’s hope that continues for as long as possible.

Player news, as I said we have no Joe Cook today also have doubts over Rob Flooks and a couple of others, we will endeavour to get as many fit and ready as possible.

Enjoy the game today, I have no doubt it will be an exciting one between 2 good attacking sides, let’s hope we can have a repeat of the FA cup match which would really set the cat amongst the pigeons in the play-off race, we have been on the periphery of it and quietly gone about our business but I believe we are a very good side who are punching well above our weight, we have a run of extremely tough games now though and that’s what you want at this stage of the season, we look forward to it.

Up the citizens!

THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – CIRENCESTER TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY

Cirencester Town FC was formed in 1889 and played amateur football in the Cirencester & District League, Cheltenham League and eventually the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League.

In the late ‘60s Cirencester joined the Gloucester County League, moving from there up to the Hellenic League in 1969. During that time, they had their first national cup run, reaching the 2nd round proper of the FA Amateur Cup. They won their first major piece of silverware, taking the Hellenic First Division Championship in 1973-74 to reach the Premier Division. Following a subsequent relegation, the modern phase of development was slowly established, with their Smithsfield ground being improved.

Runners up to Cinderford Town in ‘90-’91 put the club back in the Hellenic Premier, and they also picked up the Hellenic League First Division Challenge Cup for the first time as well as the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup (North). Premier Division Runners up ’91 – 92 behind Shortwood United in the Premier Division, they also lost 2-1 to Shortwood United in the GFA Challenge Trophy Final, but bagged that season’s Arthur Shipway Cup.

Season 1995-96 was the start of the new era. In partnership with Cirencester College, the club began the groundbreaking Football Academy programme. Developing rapidly, first under Dave Hockaday and when he moved as Youth Team Manager to Watford FC, followed by Steve Lowndes, the Academy have been National College Champions in ’97 and in ’98, five times winners of the English Schools FA U19 Colleges Cup since 1998, and British Colleges Trophy Champions 4 times since ’97. The youngsters have regularly reached the latter stages of the FA Youth Cup as the last remaining non-league club in that competition and in 2008-09 reached the third-round proper before losing to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The success of the Academy has had the knock-on effect of providing CTFC with new blood and developing talent.

Off field, a long planning process led to the development of the Community Club phase led by Chairman Steve Abbley and implemented over 3 years by Business Manager Anna Kocherhan. In summer 2002 Brian Hughes succeeded Ray Baverstock as manager. At the same time the club, having invested the proceeds of the sale of Smithsfield in the Corinium Stadium at Kingshill, moved into their new faciltity and renamed as “The Centurions”. This development was followed in November 2004 by the opening of The Arena, a state of the art full size indoor training facility. We have now been awarded the FA’s “Charter Standard Community Club” status and this summer we received the 2006 Gloucestershire FA Award for “Charter Standard Community Club of the Year”, which was presented to Steve Abbley by Sir Geoff Hurst.

The Junior section of the club, with its philosophy of “football for all” and which has in the region of 300 members, is of vital importance to the club and with a thriving Ladies team in addition to the Men’s first team, the club really does provide a valuable service to the local community. With the Arena hosting approximately 70 teams in its 5-a- side and 6-a-side football leagues, and the Club being a thriving private and corporate event venue, the future of the Club is assured.

In 2003-04, Cirencester Town battled hard with Champions Redditch United and runners up Gloucester City to finish third in the Western Division and joined the newly restructured Premier Division, where, in their first season, they finished seventh, only one point away from the Play Off places.

In May 2006, after four highly successful years and having raised expectations at the club, Brian Hughes resigned as First Team Manager to be replaced by Neil Hards. Neil had taken a year out of football after his achievements at Winchester City where they gained “back to back” promotions and won the FA Vase in 2004. Unfortunately, despite some good early performances, the team lacked the necessary consistency, and a disastrous run of results after Christmas meant they finished in the relegation places. However, the club was later reprieved from relegation after a number of changes were made to club allocations in the non-league structure due to club mergers and other decisions.

In May 2007, former players, Adi Viveash and Paul Hunt, took over as Manager and Assistant Manager respectively, and the club was looking forward to making progress again under the new management team, as they set out on their new managerial careers. However, things did not go according to plan and despite winning 4 out of 5 games over the festive period the club were relegated to the South and West Division.

Manager Adi Viveash left the Centurions to take up his role as Chelsea and Brian Hughes was again called upon to take up the hot seat as First Team manager. The 2009 – 10 season proved to be a very successful one with the Development squad winning the league in their first season and the first team gaining promotion via the play offs after 2 very good away wins both with late goals.

Manager Brian Hughes managed the clubs first season back in the Premier Division in 2010-2011 and the club finished 13th. Unfortunately, 2011-12 saw the heartbreak of relegation and our first year back in the South & West division saw us finish a respectable 10th in the table

2013-2014 saw the club have its most successful season ever gaining automatic promotion back to the Southern League Premier by clinching the title on the last day of the season to beat Merthyr Town to the championship. Brian Hughes worked with a small squad which managed to overturn a 9-point deficit and clinched the title last term by winning the last 7 games of the season whilst everyone else dropped points on the way.

2016-2017 saw changes at the helm after a poor start Brian Hughes was relieved of the manager’s job and Charlie Griffin was installed as his replacement. Despite a huge effort, we yet again suffered relegation, losing on the final day of the season to Kings Langley in a must win game to have any chance of survival and needing results elsewhere to go our way which unfortunately did not happen.

2017-2018 A brand new state of the art 3G pitch was installed prior to the start of the new campaign at The Corinium Stadium. After a slow start The Centurions missed out on a playoff spot on goals difference. Charlie and the players finished the season 16 games unbeaten (13 wins & 3 draws) but disappointingly this wasn’t enough to clinch the last playoff berth in an exciting end to the season.

THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – CINDERFORD TOWN FC PLAYER PROFILES

Mateusz Wieczorek - Goalkeeper Big and strong goalkeeper who commands his box and is quick off the line. Great shot stopper and starts his second season as the established number 1 at The Corinium despite lots of interest from other clubs over the summer.

Will Christopher – Defender Last seasons ‘Young player of the year’ who has gone from strength to strength since his arrival last season. A pacey full back, who likes a tackle and rarely gives the ball away and is equally as good going forward providing brilliant deliveries from out wide.

He had brief spell with neighbours Gloucester City before joining the Centurions, He is known for his canny passing ability and midfield tenacity.

Louis Spalding– Defender Signed for the Centurions in the Summer having been surprisingly released by Swindon Town. Louis spent a period on loan last term at The Corinium Stadium and was one of Charlie’s first signings over the summer. Great on the ball, works tirelessly for the team and has great delivery from set pieces. A great addition to the squad

A classy, clever, precise midfielder who can unlock defences with a telling pass.

Despite lots of interest over the summer Ben remained at The Corinium looking to pick up where left of last season. Previous clubs include Swindon Town, Swindon Supermarine and Chippenham Town.

Alan Griffin – Striker Club captain and a great leader for the Centurions. A big powerful striker who knows where the goal is. Leads the line well and creates chances for others. Charlie Griffin – Manager Charlie is now in his second full season as a manager having taken over the managerial reign’s mid-way through the 2016-2017 season. After missing out on a play-off spot last term (on goal difference) Charlie is already looking to go one better this season and has strengthened his squad with several new additions whilst holding on to the majority of last season team.

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Cirencester to Winchester for today’s league game where in terms of Roman names Venta Belgarum will be playing Corinium Dubunnorum. This will be the third meeting between the club this season as not only did the clubs meet in the league game earlier in the season, but we also played each other in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup with us winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Rob Carr, Simba Mlambo and Joe Hayward to earn ourselves a place in the 4th qualifying round of the F A Cup for the first time in over 60 years. However, Cirencester got their revenge 10 days later beating us 4-2 in the league, with the prolific Ben Whitehead scoring twice for the hoe team, Tommy Ouldridge and Alan Griffin once with Oli Bailey and Jamie Barron scoring for Winchester. In fact, all seven league games between the clubs having been won by Cirencester which is something we will be keen to end today.

For me I have also seen the Cirencester Academy team play at Clanfield (Oxon) this season and they were beaten 2-1, with the Cirencester team captained by Sam Farr, son of former Clanfield (Oxon) striker Ian Farr who like his Dad Brian (Sam’s grandfather) played professionally for Swindon Town. In fact, my only previous visit to Cirencester’s ground was to see their Academy team play Clanfield (Oxon). Wingers Danny Gudger and Charlie Buse as well as Farr were in good form that day.

I have known about the Cirencester Town football club for a long time going back to the days when the likes of Les Wenban and Terry Onions were banging in the goals. However, my first attempt to see them play ended in disaster when having boarded a train which I thought was going to Swindon I ended up in Exeter. However, that was a long time and at a time when they were still playing at their Tetbury Road ground which they vacated many years ago, to play at the new stadium.

Although they have been a Southern League club for 20 years ago, and have an excellent academy, life has not always been plain sailing for them and in 1988/89 they finished bottom of the lower division of the Hellenic League, although three seasons later they finished Premier Division runners up, and in 1995/96 they finished as champions and were promoted to the Southern League

In 2016/17 they were relegated from the Premier Division, having in the previous season achieved a final position of 15th in that division, despite winning 18 of their 46 league games.

Last season they started the campaign slowly, but recovered well and only just missed out on a play-off place.

During their 27 seasons as a Hellenic League club they had their ups and downs, having a spell of 13 consecutive seasons in Division 1, but they are now very much an established Southern League club having had three spells as a Premier Division club covering a total of nine years. They have reached the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup three times and the 3rd round proper of the FA Trophy once.

Congratulations to Winchester for reaching the semi-finals of the Southampton Senior Cup and for the splendid win against Paulton Rovers which was our first win against Paulton since Craig Davis took over as Winchester manager. However, Cirencester are performing well this season and are currently in a playoff place, THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE WCFC 2-0 BASHLEY

Although I have reported on every home league game played for Winchester in the last three years, I do not necessarily attend away or Southampton Senior Cup fixtures, but now in such situations I try and submit a match report using some of the twitter feeds and some background information even if as much as possible I use my own words.

Winchester progressed to the semi-finals of the Southampton Senior Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bashley. For me personally the match was played the day before my birthday so it was a good birthday present, while manager Craig Davis and chief scout Pete Millard were both involved in the Bashley set up for several years, Craig as a player.

Although Bashley now play in the Sydenham's Wessex League it is worth pointing out that as little as five years ago, they were playing in the Southern League Premier Division. In fact, under the management of Trevor Parker they once finished fourth having at one time led the table in the days when winning this division usually meant promotion to the National League.

Winchester fielded six players in Ryan Pryce, Joe Hayward, Joe Cook, Joshua Harfield, Jamie Barron and Simba Mlambo who had started the previous Saturday plus Oli Bailey and Jake Rawkins who are very much part of the first team squad and both came on at Thatcham. Recent signing Graham Williams was also selected and there were starting berths for Fabio Manuel and Mark Fawley, plus a fairly young bench.

Both the goals were scored by former Bashley player Oli Bailey within four minutes of each other in the first half. The first coming in the 25th minute when Simba Mlambo won possession and set up Oli Bailey and the second coming when a good run by Bailey put him clean through and he made no mistake. Jake Rawkins also came close for Winchester as they looked comfortable in the first half.

In the second half Winchester hit the post and Simba Mlambo headed over following a cross from Jamie Barron, but again they looked comfortable, with Ryan Pryce untroubled in the Winchester goal. Towards the end of the second half Ant Croucher, Jack Francis and Sam Tonks were introduced as substitutes.

Joe Merrett scored for Winchester City Reserves who were beaten 2-1 by AFC Stoneham Reserves. AFC Stoneham first team are scheduled to be Winchester's next opponents in the Southampton Senior Cup.

WINCHESTER CITY FC are the proud winners of the FA Cup Fact-file Performance of the Year Award. Here is what Phil Annets, founder of FA Cup Fact-file and FA Cup Team awards has said:

“The FACTAs were introduced in the 2015-16 season to recognise the efforts and performances of non-league clubs in the FA Cup. Over 640 non-league clubs participate in this great Cup competition each year, but the vast majority of their achievements go under the radar. The FACTAs are designed to raise awareness of these achievements and were voted on by thousands of non-league clubs' fans. The 2018-19 Performance of the Year FACTA recognises the best one-off match performances - a giant-killing, a comeback win, a large margin of victory etc. - and is awarded this year to Winchester City for their excellent 4-1 away win at higher league side Merthyr Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round. The Southern League Division 1 South side defeated their Southern League Premier South opponent’s courtesy of a Tyrell Mitford hat-trick and a Jamie Barron strike. Craig Davis' side won the national public vote against seven other nominated non-league teams by the closest of margins, but are the deserved winners of this year's Performance of the FA Cup FACTA.”
