Saturday, August 12, 2017 The Saratoga Special 17 Saratoga Memories, presented by Keeneland, is an ongoing series that looks back at some of the top moments from Keeneland Sales graduates among Saratoga’s best racing. Every horse starts somewhere, even Saratoga superstars. Keeneland Sales helps The Special look back at some memorable graded stakes winners – and Keeneland graduates – at the Spa. We’ll look back, re-connect and dig up some memories. Enjoy. Grand Arch Fourstardave 2015 BY JOE CLANCY He wasn’t old enough to be called a “grand old man,” despite his name, so another descrip- tive phrase will have to do when it comes to Grand Arch. “Feisty old bugger,” Brian Lynch said when asked to describe his multiple graded stakes winner who spent the better part of five years in the barn before being retired recently at age 8 with seven wins, six seconds, nine thirds and $1,894,563 in earnings. Bred in Kentucky by Hunter Valley Farm and Stephen Hillen, Grand Arch sold twice at Keeneland – as a weanling at the November sale in 2009 and as a yearling the following September. Jim and Susan Hill paid $120,000 at the latter, and got a bargain. Grand Arch broke his maiden in his second start, Aug. 22, 2012, at Woodbine. He became a stakes winner in 2014 and made three consec- utive starts in the Fourstardave at Saratoga – a second (beaten a neck) to Seek Again in 2014, a Tod Marks win over Ironicus and Seek Again in 2015 and a Recently retired Grand Arch wins the 2015 Fourstardave at Saratoga. third to Tourist and A Lot last year. Hillen bought the mare carrying even as a weanling. Lynch was thinking about another try at the Grand Arch for $65,000 at Keeneland November “He was always a lovely quiet horse to be Fourstardave this summer, but a comeback was 2008. Foaled at Hunter Valley, the chestnut colt around, that’s the way we’d remember him,” thwarted after just one start in 2017. 18 The Saratoga Special Saturday, August 12, 2017 Grand Arch – Continued from page 18 said Regan. “He was a pleasant horse to deal with. It’s brilliant when they go and do that. It’s always our idea and wish that they’re successful for people that buy them, but when they go on and do that it’s special.” Lynch remembers a young racehorse with potential, but one who knew what he wanted around the barn. Grand Arch won once as a 3-year-old and twice at 4. He became a stakes winner at 5, a Grade 1 winner at 6 and was still swinging a big bat at age 7 in 2016. “I think he just got better with rac- ing, the older he got the better he got,” said Lynch. “He was a lovely big style of a horse and always had a great pres- ence to him. We were lucky to have him. “He was very independent. After- noons, he was very happy to get out and have a graze and a walk, but in the barn he wanted to be left alone and didn’t want a hell of a lot of special at- tention.” Grand Arch, who spent his winters at the Hills’ Margaux Farm in Midway, Ky., now gets a chance to do nothing – or anything he wants. “I’m sure the Hills will find a great place for him,” said Lynch. “They’ve always had a soft spot for him. They love him. I would say he’ll either re- main at Margaux Farms or end up at their place in Calgary. They’ve got a few of their favorite horses up there and he’d fit right in.”
