Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival. An important event on the Buddhist calendar, this water festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. This festival is held in April from 13-15, which Thai people regard as the hottest time of the year. People go back to their home and pay respect to their parents and the elderly. Conventionally, friends and family celebrate Songkran by splashing water on each other in the form of a wish for a year filled with blessings and by visiting temples to make merits. The Thai people believe that water is spiritually purifying: it cleanses you of any bad luck or grievances from the past year, and blesses you with fortune and happiness for the year ahead.
